STOCK PRICES UP MARKET’S FEARS ALLAYED AID THE CLOSING WAS STRONG. GAINS OF ITO 3 POINTS WERE FREQUENT AMONG LEADING STOCKS OF LIST. Market Free from Pressure ot Liquidation So That Small Buying Was Effective in Lifting Prices. Small Supply of Stocks Enabled Holders to Advance the Asking prices— lncrease in L. &N. Dlvi. dens Helped Whole Southern Group. .New York, Dec. 16. —The nervous tremors which have afflicted the stock market all through the week were quieted to-day; the advancing ten dency which has been in evidence prac tically ever since the downward course waa arrested on Tuesday was more consistent and uninterrupted than at any previous .time on the recovery and the day’s gains were held with com parative firmness. The market was entirely free from any pressure of liquidation, so that the small buying was effective in lift ing prices and the supply of stocks was so scanty as to enable holders to advance the asking price. The United States Steel stocks con tinued in large demand and were helped by the report of the placing of a large order for steel rails for Pennsylvania. Southern Ronds Strong. The increase in the Louisville and Nashville dividend radiated a sympa thetic effect amongst its affliliated prop erties and the whole Southern group. Reports of a definite adjustment of the U mid-Pennsylvania troubles met with some disclaimers, but the impression was allowed that the seriousness of the dispute had been exaggerated. The outgoing gold movement was practically ignored as money was of fered in abundance, and at lower in terest rates. The continued inflow of currency from the interior promises to largely offset the week's decline of gold exports and on other accounts. I,Mte in the day the perception of the freedom from pressure on the market led to a lively bidding up of prices throughout and the closing was very strong at the top level. Gains of 1 to s points are frequent amongst the •leading stocks. Bonds were strong. Total sales, par value. $4,195,000. United States bonds were unchanged. iVEIiV YORK STOCK AND BOND LIST Railroad Stocks. New York, Dec. 16.—Bradstreet's to morrow will say: Trade, crop and industrial conditions are mainly favorable, and with season able activity in retail and holiday dis tribution in most sections, the year is drawing to its close with a decided ly cheerful tone pervading most lines of business effort. The area in winter wheat will not equal that planted a year ago, and conditions on Dec. 1 were low, but since the government report Was Is sued the Western drought has been fairly well broken by rains and snow. Cold weather Was stimulated heavy dry goods, clothing and footwear, and helped re-order business with Jobbers East, West and North. Exceptions to reports of widespread activity in holi day distribution come from the Pacific coast and from portions of the South, which latter reports cotton marketing slower and collections tardier. Plenteous supplies of cheap money render the holding of cotton easier than in other years. Industry as a whole Is active, iron and steel notably so, but building trades feel seasonable quieting influences and cotton manufacturing Is not active In all its branches. Railway earnings for November show gains in gross exceed ing 9 per cent. Business failures for the week ending D<“c. 15 number 239. against 239 in the like week in 1903. DRY GOODS MARKET. New York. Dec. 16.—The dry goods situation has changed but little, and yet - the manufacturer and local mer chant feel encouraged over the out look. Buyers are operating a little further ahead and are finding Increased difficulties in getting deliveries, and the majorities of lines are In first-class conditions, as far as orders are con cerned.
