NEWS OF A DAY IN
GEORGIA’S CAPITAL
MANY WANTED PARDONS
AM) SOME WERE GRANTED BY THE
PRISON COMMISSION.
Declined to Intervene in the Case
of Jack Hone, the Floyd County
loans Man Sentenced to Be
Hmined for Murder—Sister* Plead
in llis Behalf nnd the Son of Hi*
Victim Ashed That Ihe Sentence
of lfeatli He t arried Out—Harry
Sweat Mho Killed Pat O'Neill in
Savannah, Recommended for n
Pardon.
Atlanta. Dec. 16.—The commission
declined to interfere in the case of
Jack Bone, the young white man who
is sentenced to be hanged at Rome on
Monday for the murder of Farmer
Zach Hall. To-day while F. W. Hall,
the young son of the dead man. was
in Gov. Terrell’s office, urging him to
let the sentence stand, the three sis
ters of the condemned man were sit
ting in the reception room waiting to
see tlhe Governor in order to urge
clemency for their brother.
When the commission refused to rec
ommend clemency. Gov. Terrell told
Bone's attorney he would hold the
case open until to-morrow in order to
give him time to present affidavits of
lunacy. Upon this the Governor will
determine whether he will appoint a
commission to investigate Bone's sani
ty, as is provided in the new law of
1903. This point will be settled to-mor
roiv afternoon.
Harry Sweat, who killed Pat O'Neill
in Savannah in 1898, and who has
since been serving a life sentence in
the penitentiary, was to-day recom
mended for a pardon by tihe Prison
Commission, and the Governor will
grant the necessary order to-morrow.
The action of the Prison Commission
in pardoning Sweat was due to cer
tain evidence which was not
taken into consideration by the
court, namely the ante-mortem
statement of O'Neill that it
was he who made Sweat cut him. In
1899 Sweat, who had been sentenced
to be hanged, was granted a commu
tation to life imprisonment.
Major Anderson, sent up for life from
Sumter county for murder in 1892, was
pardoned.
The commission decided it would not
pass on the case of former State Sena
tor W. P. Dodd until the January
meeting.
C. It* I inr DfimaKes*
James Edward, who served a foul
years' sentence from Fulton for per
jury. having been sent to the state
prison farm In 1899, to-day tiled a
claim tor damages against the state
for $30,000, claiming that he was se
verely and unjustly whipped, and that
he was shot in the foot in a personal
encounter with Warden Slater. The
commission has no power to act on
any such claims.
Rbrnner I,allies Want Trains to
Stop.
The Railroad Commission to-day set
for a hearing on Jan. 11, a petition
from fifty ladles of Ebenezer, the fa
mous settlement of the Salzburgers in
Effingham county, asking that the
trains of the Seaboard Air Line be re
quired to stop there when flagged. The
ladies claimed that the people there
now have to travel too far to get to a
station where the trains stop.
Lower Rates for Waynesboro.
The commission granted permission
to the Central of Georgia Railway
Company to reduce the freight rates
from Savannah to Waynesboro, pro
vided the reductions make no unjust
discriminations against any other
points in that territory.
Thomuston Merchants Complain.
The commission set for a hearing on
Feb. 10, a complaint from the people
of Thomaston to the effect that they
are discriminated against in freight
rates. Freight rates complaints have
recently begun to grow numerous.
Dates tor Pension Payments.
Pension Commissioner J. W. Lind
sey to-day completed his schedule of
dates for the payment of pensions for
1905. The pension payments will be
gin, Jan. 18, and be finished by Feb.
27. The date for the payment of
Chatham county’s pensioners has been
fixed as Feb. 8.
Georgia Was Well Advertised.
Assistant Commissioner Glascock
Baireft w-.o has had charge of the
Georgia building at St. Louis, return
ed to the city to-day. He says no
state in the union was better adver
tised at the fair than Georgia. More
than 40,000 Georgians visited the Geor
gia building during the fair. Mr.
Barrett asserts that two or three col
cnization schemes, with Georgia as
their objective point, are now on foot
as the result of the showing which
this state made at the exposition.
Life Insurance Cos. Licensed.
The Columbian National Life Insur
ance Company of Boston, incorporated
In 1902, with a capital stock of $200,-
000, has complied, with the law and
been granted the right to do business
in Georgia.
Stole I.lris’ Jewelry.

Thornbury School for young ladies
here yesterday and made away with
over SI,OOO worth of Jewelry belonging
to the students. Edward Wright, por
ter at the school, is suspected, and the
police have been notified to arrest him.
Christmas for the Convicts.
The Prison Commission to-day sent
out notices to all the convict camps
throughout the state, directing that the
convicts all be given a holiday for
Christmas, either Saturday or Monday,
as Christmas falls on Sunday, and
also that an extra good dinner be
provided for them on this occasion.
Dropped Dead on Trnin.
G. F. Maynard, a prominent citizen
of Greenwich, 0., dropped dead from
heart failure In a Pullman car at
tached to the Southern train bound
for Jacksonville this morning. His
death occurred Just as the train was
leaving the Union Depot. The remains
were taken bark to Greenwich by his
wife and brother-in-law, who accom
panied him.

has mysteriously disappeared, and her
husband and six children have been un
able to get any news of her since last
Monday night, when she left home to

FEES WERE TOO HIGH.
Judge Speer Snid S4OO Mai Entirely
100 Much.
Valdosta, Ga., Dec. 16.—A case which
elicited unusual interest in the United
States Court this morning was the
petition of the attorneys in the Gat
chell and MeKanie bankruptcy proceed
ings for fees of S4OO. which was more
than had been fixed by the special
master. The court denied the applica
tion with the statement that “if we
should allow such large fees In all of
the bankruptcy cases the members of
our bar would become so much more
opulent than the judge himself that It
would reduce us to a position of positive
Inferiority. In the I‘artguage of Dr.
Samuel Johnson, they would become
“rich beyond the dreams of avarice."
