CHRISTMAS IN
NORTH AND SOUTH
HOW CELEBRATION DIFFERS.
\OISB MAKING HEBE SURPRISES
VISITORS FROM NORTH.
Christman in South Is Celebrated
Like Fonrth of July In the North.
Christmas Trees and Indoor Cele
bration in the Chilly Section.
Fireworks and Ronltres in the
Open Air in the Sonny South—No
Change Is Likely.
Much has been said anent the dif
ferences in the manner in which the
Christmas holiday is observed in the
North and in the South —still there is
no abatement in the intensity of the
celebration here and the more sedate
and decorous observance in the
North.
Th? occasion for fireworks and gene
ral hilarity in the North is confined
almost entirely to July 4. Christmas
is more nearly observed as a religious
festival, but withal a happy period for
the bestowal of present on the young
folks and the annual visit of old St.
Nicholas.
In the South the hilarious celebra
tion of the Fourth of July, and the
feasting and giving of good cheer is
combined in one at Christmas. A
Southerner would hardly recognize
Christmas as it is observed even in
New York city. The holiday air is
thefle. The crowds are there. The
shops are one blaze of light, and yet
it is all so different. The celebra
tion is inside the homes, where the
families gather around the fireside to
partake of Christmas cheer.
In the South Christmas is celebrated
with all the furor of the Northern
Fourth of July. Thousands of dol
lars worth of fireworks are burned,
and the heavens reflect the “Vivid red
of a hundred bonfires.
The celebration of the holiday is as
widely different as it is possible to
arrange the festivities marking the
celebration of the same event. Move
ments have been started several times
in the South to make the observance
here more In conformity with that of
the North, really marking the anni
versary of the birth of Christ, but all
have tailed. The custom has become
so thoroughly established throughout
the South that nothing but the re
habitation of the Southern states
would effect a modification of the pre
vailing customs.
In the North the small boy and girl
do not look forward to Christmas
with half the happy anticipation they
do to the coming of the Fourth of
July. To the younger generation
Christmas means many pleasures,
such as the reception of gifts, the
mysterious coming and going of Santa
Claus, but there is none of the open
air revelry and promiscuous firing of
rockets and roman candles, such as
exists in the South.
Just how the custom of the manner
of celebrating the holiday in the
South first started is as yet unex
plained. Each year the intensity
with which the holiday is celebrated
seems to increase.
