HUNGRY CROWS OF OSSABAW

Aa Reaalt Only One or Two Hog*
Were Captured Each Day—Deputy
Sheriff Fleming Arrange* to Have
Doga Sent to the laland to Aid iu
Hog-catchlug—Purchased Fence to
Separate Danila.
Crows are the last specimens of cre
ated beings to Interfere with the carry
ing out of the orders of the Chatham
County Superior Court regarding the
troubled conditions of Ossabaw. The
ending of the causes of the feud has
been prolonged for several weeks ow
ing to the acts of the crows.
The trouble began with the endeav
ors of Deputy Sheriff Walter H. Flem
ing to capture all the hogs on Ossa
baw and determine which animals were
the property of Sasser, and which of
Larissey. The hogs were wild and de
clined to be caught. The rifle, the
only certain means of stopping the
flight of one of the animals, was bar
red, and so resource was had to traps.
The hog traps were large. On the
end of the spring to each was placed
a large portion of food that was
thought to be particularly delightful to
the piggish palate. To reach it the
animal had to step entirely within th<?
trap, and the pull at the bait closed
this so that he could not make his
escape. The plan seemed to indicate
certain and rapid success.
The only thing that worked against
it was the fact that the hogs would
not approach the traps and the bait
until at least half an hour after the
deputy sheriff had left them. The crow
meanwhile, and it is legion on Ossa
baw, was not so careful. The black
birds, in large flocks, perched on the
trees and bushes and watched the
baiting of the traps, and then, just as
soon as the men left, swopped down
and stole the bait.
Dogs Will Be Used.
The result was that when the slip
pery and wily hog appeared on the
scene there was no bait in the traps
and hence nothing to tempt the ani
mals to step within the enclosures.
Now and then a hog would be cap
tured, but the number was small. Ac
cording to Deputy Sheriff Fleming he
averaged only one or two hogs each
day, and there are about 1,000 to be
caught.
Recourse will now be had to dogs,
and Deputy Sheriff Fleming has al
ready arranged to have a number sent
to Ossabaw for his use. The dogs will
be sent Into the wilds after the hogs,
for the purpose of chasing them into
the open places where the men m*ay
reach them. They will then be caught,
examined, and their ownership deter
mined.
Bought Fence Yesterday.
Mr. Fleming was In the city yester
day for the purpose of consulting
Judge Cann about certain matters re
garding the Ossabaw feud, and also
for the purpose of purchasing fence
material to be placed between the
lands of the two belligerents. One
mile and a quarter’s length of "hog
and-cattle-proof” fence was purchased.
This will be sent to the island on
Monday and the work of erecting it
begun Tuesday.
As stated in the Morning News sev
eral weeks ago, the fence will be built
along one of the public roads on the
island, on Larissey’s land, and in such
a way that he can constantly watch It
and see that it does not get out of re
pair. The cost of the fence Darissey
will bear himself. It Is probable it
will require about two weeks to put
it in position.
Judge Cann Instructed Mr. Fleming
to use his own discretion regarding
the settlement of any questions that
might arise. If either of the feudists
are dissatisfied he can file exceptions
to the finding with the court. It is
probable that this course will be fol
lowed.

METHODISTS WILL GIVE
TO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Christmas Offerings In All Georgia
Churches for That Purpose.
The Methodists of Georgia will cele
brate Christmas in all their churches
this year with offerings to the Wes
ley Memorial Hospital, which they are
establishing in Atlanta. This is the
only Methodist hospital In the South,
and it Is proposed to make it of un
usual excellence and beauty.
At the recent sessions of the Georgia
conferences it was resolved to make
Christmas Day, which comes on Sun
day this year, the occasion of gifts to
the hospital in all the Methodist
churches of the state. The movement
has taken strong hold of the hearts
of the people, and it Is believed great
things will be done.
One man in Atlanta has offered to
give $12,500 if the other Methodists of
the city will give as much. It is not
doubted that his proposal will be met,
and that Atlanta will thus head the
movement with $25,000. The rest of the
state it is hoped will do as much, and
if so, the total gifts of next Sunday
will reach $50,000. It Is proposed In
the end to put as much ‘as SIOO,OOO into
the enterprise as Its growth and needs
arise.
Bishop Candler, president of the
board of trustees, has issued the fol
lowing 1 appeal to the Methodist preach
ers and people of Georgia:
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 22.—My dear
brethren: Both the Georgia Conferences
have ordered a collection made in all
our churches next Sunday—Christmas
Day_f or the benefit of our Wesley
Memorial Hospital.
May I exhort you, both preachers
and laymen, that the matter be not
forgotten? We have no more im
portant and far-reaching interest in
hand just now than this enterprise. Let
I " ke R a great thing, worthy of
the illustrious name it bears and the
great church it represents.
Let all cash and subscriptions be
forwarded to Mr. W. L. Peel, treasur
er, (president Maddox-Rucker Banking
Company), Atlanta, Ga. It is Im
portant that we know as soon as pos
sible the results of the day’s collec
tions that the trustees may know how
to plan the work for the year. Let
Brother Peel hear from all by Wednes-'
day, Dec. 28.
_ W. A. Candler,
President Board of Trustees.
A large property has already been
bought and the hospital, if the Sundav
collections will justify, will be put in
operation within the next sixty days.
The work of arranging the building
and equipping it with all needed ap
paratus and furniture will begin at
once as soon as the funds in hand are
sufficient.
MR. W.~A. WIN BURN HOME
FROM WASHINGTON.
Mr. W. A. Winburn, vice president
and traffic manager of the Central of
Georgia railway, is home from Wash
ington where he went several days ago

agers. The association adjourned for
a month to meet in Palm Beach, Fla.
A number of problems relating to rates
were to have been considered at this
meeting of the General Traffic Associa
tion of Southern Railroads. However
they were deemed not urgent enough
for Immediate consideration and the
conference decided upon adjournment.

SAVANNAH MORNING NEWS: SATURDAY. DECEMBER 24. 1904
POLICE READY

ENTIRE FORCE ON TO-DAY.
TWO DAY-RELIEFS WIDD BE ON
STREETS MOST OF THE DAY.
AU Three Belief* Will Be On From
7 O’clock To-night Until 1 O’clock
Te-ieorrow Morning—tntonern
Circumstance* Will Prevent the
Holding of Police Court To-night.
Yesterday Wa* Dull Day In Police
Circle* .
Ninety-seven uniformed patrolmen of
the city force will go on duty at 7
o’clock to-night and remain on duty
until 1 a. m., according to orders Is
sued by Supt, Charles Garfunkel last
night and yesterday, when the reliefs
went out.
The second day relief will go on duty
to-day at 1 o’clock, Instead of 2, and
will remain on until la. m. The
night relief will go on at 7 o’clock,
supplanting the two day reliefs.
As the principal street for merry
makers is Broughton, forty-one uni
formed men, under Sergts. Woods and
Davis, will be on duty on this thor
oughfare. The “Flying Squadron,”
consisting of eight mounted men, un
der Sergt. Murphy, will be on duty in
Yamacraw, and the other sections of
the city, where there is likely to be
disturbances, will be patrolled by the
double number of men.
I’lnn* Well I.nld.
Supt. Garfunkel believes that with
this arrangement of the men all undue
hilarity and disorder will be kept down
and beyond the legitimate celebration
of the holiday, nothing unusual will
mark Christmas Eve.
The detective force will report at
police headquarters this morning, and
remain on duty until Monday, at least
two of them being at headquarters at
all hours. For the quick movements
of the detectives an automobile will be
kept in the sally port with a compe
tent chaffeur at hand to convey them
to any section of the city where any
serious affrays take place.
No Court To-nlglit.
The original plan to hold Police
Court to-night, so as to relieve the
press of prisoners at the station house.
Was been abandoned, and all those ar
rested who are not able to give bond
will be held until Monday morning.
This is made necessary by unforseen
circumstances.
Renovations at the county jail has
made It necessary to transfer a large
number of jail prisoners to the city
prison, and last night nearly all of
the available room at the city prison
was taken up. Those who anticipate
drifting into a state of oblivion
through the excessive Indulgence would
do well to make arrangements in ad
vance for bond, or else be prepared
to spend a day and night In a crowded
prison.
Many Innocent* in Town.
The large number of provincial
visitors In town makes work for the
detectives, as they fall easy prey to
the band of human sharks that infest
every city. These characters are
working industriously and some Inno
cents have already fallen prey. Re
ports of film flam games are received
frequently, and as a rule those pre
ferring charges will not remain long
enough to assist In locating and
prosecuting the offenders.
The superintendent of police has
made arrangements for extra teams
for patrol wagon duty, and If neces
sary the ambulance will be pressed
into service.
Yesterday was an unusual quiet day
in police circles, and by many was
looked on as the calm before the
storm.
A GOOD SERVANT AND FRIEND.
Savannah, Dec. 23.—Editor Morning
News: Permit me to add ‘a word to
your notice in tills morning's Issue of
the death and burial of Cornelia Cade.
Her life shows us that Without regard
to our station, without regard to
“race, color, or previous condition of
servitude,’’ conscientious discharge of
the humblest duties must, and will,
bring with it the regard, the respect,
and the tender affection of those whom
we serve, and of those who know us.
“Neely,” as we all called her, was my
nurse In my Infancy and, after the
death of my parents, continued as the
beloved friend and servant of my own
immediate family, expanding her devo
tion and her affections to include my
wife and my children; Indeed, so great
was her faithfulness, and so generous
her nature, that I think her affection
extended to many of our friends, to
whom she was well known as an Im
portant and valufable member of our
household.
Her’s was a type that, alas, Is
rapidly disappearing. I am sure that
we can love no other as we loved
her. She has left behind her 'as a
heritage for us all the memory of a
noble life well lived, of duty always
well done, and she Is surely enjoying
the peace which passeth ail under
standing. None deserve it more. What
a lesson we can learn from such a life.
