Business.
New York, Dec. 27.—The Stock Ex
change resumed business to-day after
the three-days' holiday interval with
only a nominal interest and the day’s
market but a nominal affair. This
was in accordance with expectation,
and the same state of affairs is ex

week. Interested conjecture centers
almost entirely on the future beyond
the current week.
The closeness of the money market
which is usually a feature of the clos
ing week of the year, is entirely lack
ing at the present time, and the rates
for time money to-day worked appre
ciably lower. This condition in the
money market is without doubt partly
due to the extremely quiet specula
tion in stocks.
Market Tone Strong.

was strong. This was in accordance
with the tenor of the news which was
generally favorable to values. The
voice of traffic officials both East and
West was practically in unison, the
steady expansion of traffic and the
promise of rather more business than
they will be able to attend to for the
winter.
Present car shortages are widely
complained of and the impression is
given that any further demand for
freight room will exceed present ca
pacity. The rising tendency of steel
products was still perceptible. The cf
live breaking of the drought in
was a helpful factor,
crippling of the wire service by
storm aggravated the dullness of
Business. The day’s advances were
held well until the close which was
dull and firm. Bonds were firm.
