NEWS OF A DAY IN
GEORGIA’S CAPITAL
A SMITH TO THE RESCUE!
HE WIU FIGHT THE rF.TITION OF
T. CIVLKR SMITH.
Atlanta Capitalist Doesn’t Approve
of AVhat He Regard* a* on Insult
to the Xante of Smith—Thinks T.
Cuyler Smith Should Not Be Per
mitted to Change His Name to
Cnyler—Something About the
Smiths’ Achievements.
Atlanta. Pec. 29.—Jasper Newton
Smith, a well known .and eccentric
capitalist, better known as Jack Smith,
has engaged an attorney, Frank Ar
nold, to fight the petition of Telamon
Cruger Cuyler Smith, asking the Su
perior Court to change his naiM?"TtP
Telamon Cruger Smith Cuyler.
Cuyler Smith's petition to change his
name to the more historic one of Cuy
ler excited considerable interest and
amusement at the time at was filed.
Now Jasper N. Smith says he proposes
to fight the petition in the interests
of the honored name of Smith, and he
expects to have considerable fun out
of it. He cites numerous instances
of men named Smith who have risen
to high distinction, among them Hon.
Robert Smith of Maryland, who was
in Jefferson’s cabinet; Caleb B. Smith
of Indiana, who was in Lincoln's cabi
net; Charles Emory Smith of Philadel
phia; Hoke Smith of Georgia, and
other noted Smiths; and then he calls
on all the lawyers named Smith in At
lanta to join in the fight to sustain
the honored name. In announcing his
intention to fight for the name Jasper
N. Smith says, in part:
‘‘ln the United States there are 600,-
000 Smiths, according to statistics, and
I have furnished Peter Francisco
Smith, one of the Atlanta Smith law
yers, with a lengthy list of Smiths,
showing that they are among the most
prominent and successful citiens of
America. The names will doubtless be
incorporated in my answer to the bill
of the man who wants to do a cogno
men flip flap. The Smiths annually
draw from the federal government over
13.000,000 in salaries —not pensions—
which shows that their services to the
country are of some value. I attribute
the great number of Smiths to the hon
oraible, honest, pure and healthy iive§_
that the members of the great family
lead."

Titlton, Ga., Dec. 29.—Addie, the 12-
year-old son of Gen. Norman, at Nor

tally wounded by a lad named Gibson,
this week. A negro boy had purchased
a pistol, and a lot of boys were look

It was in the hands of Gibson w'hen,
by some means, the weapon was dis

passing almost through his body.
His condition Is still precarious, but
hope is entertained for his recovery.
Young Gibson was arrested, but the
general opinion Is that the shooting
was accidental.
