New York, Deo. 29.—There was an
other pretty comprehensive advance in
prices of stocks to-day and the move
ment was without any signs of specu
lative excitement or the reactionary
consequences which usually follow
traders buying for a turn. The buy
ing, while without animation, was per
sistent at all price levels and the ad
vance in prices which resulted met
with no important obstacle in the way
of selling orders.
The tone of the money market was
pronounced "very easy” to-day, which
is a condition unprecedented of late
years with only two business days re
maining to the end of the year. A
strengthening influence on the Penn
sylvania group was the increase of
yesterday in the dividend of the Penn
sylvania Company, which caused hopes
of an indulgent policy towards stock
holders of ail the subsidiary companies
of that great system.

FIRST CRAFT OF KIND *
TO VISIT SAVANNAH.
Is Four-.Mnstod Bark Pass of Bran
der Now in Port.
Though Savannah is known as one
of the chief ports of 'the Atlantic coast
and is visited every year by an im
mense number of craft of all kinds
and from all countries it has now at
its docks a vessel, the first of its kind
that has ever come to this city. This
is the four-masted bark Pass of Bran
der, which recently arrived from Chili
with a cargo of nitrate of soda. Barks
are no rarety here, but a four-mast
ed one has never called at this port
before. The Pass of Brander is of
unusually large tonnage for a bark,
1,993 tons, and engages altogether in
deep sea traffic.
The tug DeVeaux Powel, which has
been used in the Savannah harbor by
one of the dredging companies for some
time, was yesterday hauled out on
Rourke’s marine railway to be repair
ed preparatory to making the trip
North, where the vessel will be em
ployed in the near future. The work
of repairs will be completed in about
three days.

CAN WITH A DOUBLE LID.
The newest thing In the way of gar
bage cans is one which has been de
signed by a Philadelphia inventor, sup
plied with several novel features by
which the odor of the outfit is destroy
ed and the germs arising from It, which
are generally poisonous, are purified by
the action of disinfectants. The can Is,

first of all, fitted with a double lid, one
resting on the top of the can and the
other on a flange a few Inches below
the top. While this makes It doubly
difficult for the odors to escape, the
entire Interior of the box is constantly
undergoing disinfection. The space be
tween the two lids is utilized for the
storage of a couple of small tanks, de
signed to contain any one of the many
disinfectants which are suitable for
this purpose. The tanks are lined with
sine, which resists the action of any
of these articles. They are readily
filled by unscrewing a cap. and if the
receptacle is about half filled there is
no possibility of the contents being
spilled. One of these tanks has an
opening leading out Into the bucket
and has a direct action on the contents
of the can. while the other one opens
Into the space between the two lids and
acts upon the air which may possibly
have escaped through the first lid. By
this arrangement the only two spaces
where the elements of danger can pos
sibly lurk are treated separately, with
the result that the can is absolutely
ranitary throughout.
