on the 17th. Tide postpones the trial of
the case, much to the regret and Inconve
nience of the defendant. Sir. Joiner feels
confident of being able, when the trial

acter as a gentlemen of Integrity.

Tax on Cotton.—Every Southern man.
every business man. every conscientious
mail, every merchant South and West
whose tnulo Is based In a great measure
upon the cotton staple. Is Interested 111 the
repeal of the present onerous tax on cot
ton. This tax Is disheartening the pro
ducer; it Is paralysing trade; and Is not
only making the South poorer, but is sori-
l ously impairing trade In tho Wort. It
ought to be repealed. The people should
memorialize Congress to repeal it at once.
One of these memorials can he seen at
this office, where every body In Atlanta is
invited to come and alga it.

Richmond. Oct. 19.—It is understood
that the Supremo Court of Appeals of Vir
ginia will, on Monday, announce an opin
ion declaring the stay law unconstitu
tional. The question came up in the ease of
Fyanklln Starnes. Judge Jaynes, beluga
member of the Legislature when the law
passed, did not sit.
Col. Stanton, Paymaster of this District,
received, to-day, fifty thousand dollars to

General Schofield announces, to-night,
that ho will give no official opinion as to
the eligibility of Individual candidates to
