Christmas times Is nothing to attract at
tention. Hut it Is a horse of another color.
When a regular ••breakdown” comes oil' at
a Church, as was the case lust night, at the
School House on Ruckle street, where a
large crowd, under great religious excite
ment, had assembled under the preaching
of Itov. Mr. Spilman. The lloor of the
building was packed with "the weight of
souls that hung heavy upon it,” great
shouting and singing was going on, when
ail of sudden four of the sleepers of the build*
jug gave way, and the lloor sank in. Con-
sternation and terror prevailed for a while
lest the heavy brick lines over-head should
fail and do Its work of crushing, in the
emergency the olliciating minister coun
seled the people to coolness and caution in
escaping the danger which threatened
them, and the exit was made without
further casualty. MV. have not learned

The Planters’ Convention lately field in
Selma, Ala., adjourned on the 19th instant.
Among the resolutions adopted are the lid-
lowing: .
llesoivcd, That wc, the Planters in Con
vention assembled, believe it to be incom
patible with the interests of the planters
to make cotton our chief staple, and that
the mania for the production of tills staple
lias caused us to neglect, heretofore, the
important and protltable production of
grains, the raising of stock, ns well as the
growing of fruit. ,
Resolved, That it lias been a grievous
error on the part of planters to look to the
West for our supplies, when these can bo
raised with profit to ourselves at home, and
that our Interests us planters must Buffer
until this error be remedied.
Resolved, That we believe it to be. in
compatible with the Intcre.-t of our plant
ers and with the interest of the country,
tor the planters to exceed one-fourth of
their entire crop in cotton, and wc do re
commend that the remainder of the crop
shall consist of corn and other cereals.

Potent tttmollei,
A few months since, I road, with Interest,
an article in one of the Medical journals,
iu relation to tbo use of chloroform. This
article, although a great blessing, fulfilling
inany Important ends in surgical ojieia-
tIons, yet wc arc compelled to admit
that Its administration U often fol.owed
by fatal consequence*. The medical jour
nals both in America and Kurope have re-
orded numbers of deaths, and In consd-
[iicncc of which, a largo majority of the
Intelligent and FCtentlflc part of the pro
ion, in both countries, have almost en
tirely abandoned its use. No intelligent
physician will dare deny but that it is
a remedy of doubtful and uncertain jMjwers.
mid Its effects hard to overcome; and when
used as an nnadhetie agent, no human mind
can always predict the result. Its favora
ble or unfavorable Impression upon the
human organization must depend upon
the idiosyneracy ot the person; tl.eivi'm*.
it the danger is alone dependent upon a
certain condition of the individual consti
tution, and ail admit our ineoinpetency to
judge correctly, then to give it at all, is
but a -leap in the‘dark,” and unau
thorized, upon correct physiological
principles. When once its dreadful
inlliienco has been produced iu any given
ease, it will require an equal amount of
judgment, and more guess work to llnd
tile remedy to counteract its effects; a- the
antidote must, to Ihj successful, depend up
on the Idiosyneracy of the patient at the
time.
It Is exceedingly strange, to my mind,
that while the most scientific part of the
profession are throwing the weight of tlie’r
Influence against the indiscriminate use of
chloroform, that men are found in almost
every community who are carrying
their pocket* daily a vini of tills dangeri
remedy, mid giving it iu almost every ci
with as little fear for Its results as if tli
were usingsugarpills. If l were permit
ted to discriminate between a Chloroform
and Sugar-pill Doctor, I should ill every
instance decide In favor of the hitter. IV bile
no good could result from the use of sugar-
pills, 1 am certain my life would be safe.—
On the other band, should I be put under
the inlliienceof chloroform, Iain certain the
result could not be foretold. It might be
unfavorable, and death possibly end the
scene. Anti-Chloroform.
