Fire.—Abont three o'clock Friday morn
ing a lire broke out In the millinery estab
lishment of Mr. I. Ihiuics, Decatur street.
Little loss, however, was sustained from
the fire, hut we believe the greater part of
the damages sustained wits from the water
thrown Into thu house by the engines.—
Tallalulah, No. 3, was promptly on the
ground, and It Is suggested that the “ ma
chine ” did about as effectual service with
out u President as she could have done
with an otlieial dignitary of that rank.
Jesting aside, Tallulah is one of our best
engines, and the noble crew which rallies
around her is composed of active, vigilant,
and efficient firemen.
Municipal Court.—Court met yesterday
at the usual hour, his Honor Mayor IV11-
liams presiding. The busiuess before the
Court being small, the attendance and In
terest was limited to those interested.
A Mr. Lambert. charged with disorderly
conduct, on being asked ‘•guilty,’’ or -not

investigation of Mr. L.’s case, tlie charge
not being sustained, Mr. L. was discharged.

Council FirocNiniNas.— Council mot
last night at the regular liour; present.
Ills honor. Mayor Williams, and a Alii quo
rum of Aldermen.
The minutes of lost meeting were read
and adopted.
A communication from Mr. Itin. Hemp
hill, notifying Council of his willingness
to educate, free of charge, three young
men of the city, was read and referred,
A communication from Clerk pf Second
Market, notifyIngConncil of Mr.Calhoun's
failure to pay stall rent—roforred.
Petition of citizens praying the opening
of Walker street—referred.
Petition from a large number of colored
-citizens, asking that at least one ooiorod
man from each ward be appointed on the
city police—referred.
An ordinance prohibiting the erection of
any wooden building or paling in Uie new
City Cemetery, was read third time and
rejected by a large vote.
An ordinance prohibiting kito-flying
and bail-playing In the streets or vacant
lots in the city, was read third time—voted
upon by rising two different time*, and
each time there was a tie vote—the. first
being three for and three against—the sec
ond time there was four for and four
against the ordinance, consequently the
Mayor was called upon to cast the deciding
vote, which lie did in favor of the ordi
nance.
Be Frugal.—That with frugality few
would lie poor, and without it scarce any
would grow rich, is a maxium os well un
derstood In theory as any truth that can be
tittered, but the trouble accnifi to be to re
duce it to practice. There are few persoas,
however small their income, but what
could, if they would, “lay up for a rainy
day” a small portion of their weekly or
monthly enruings. But, hrvlng no special
object in view, they “live as they lisp,” and
tliuss pass through the bloom ef their
youth and their early manliood without
saving a |ieiiny upon which to subsist in
their day of atlliction and In old age. This
certainly is wrong, suicidal, wicked in tbe
extreme. While there is yet left some of
the milk of human kindness in the world,
it should lie a sad reflection to any rational
mind to realize the fket that he Is being
homo by Time's rapid wings down the de
clivity of life; that old age will soon par
alyze these strong nerves and active limbs,
and that there is naught laid up to nourish
ami comfort in the hour of waat. It may
be true that the sum saved in a Week, In a
month, or even In a year, must, necessa
rily, be small. But let us remember tbs
important lessons taught by the Industry
and peroerenuteo of the aat and bee. The
savings from even a whole year, singly and
alone, may appear insignificant. But the
lie severance ami economy of year after ymr
will coeat—It »IU amount to no small sum.
Take, for Instance, the ooet of one drink
]ier day of alcoholic liquor*, for one year,
and we have the sum of'*90.38. Add to
this ten cents worth of ctgwrs, tobecco, or of
the Ttartmitr beverage*, and wa have *38.50
more, which .hum added together, make
the sung little sum of tltAi* Two or
three yearn saving of them items, to say
yqiq^g uf a great many tauMnial as*
peudlturu* that ndgtit.be dispensed with.
