THE DAILY OPINION. SUNDAY MORNING:::::OCTOBER 13. Wht Toads are Cold.—The abundant moisture and coolness of the toad, so es sential to his health and comfort, help make him disagreeable to us. As the moist coolness of a dog’s nose startles any one who feels it unexpectedly or in the dark, (M> does the invariable dewy, cold and clam my sweat of the toad, when touched, of- lfcnd many a civilized simpleton. I say civilised, remembering that the black bar barians of Senegal, availing themselves of this perpetual coolness produced by the abundant moisture and rapid evaporation on the skin of toads, are in the habit, as Adamson informs us, of applying toads to their foreheads as they travel in torrid heats over burning sands, on the same principle that Roman ladies of the Impe nd age carried cooling pots in their hands and bosoms in the form of living serpents; or that the langnid beauties of Turkish se raglios pass between their lingers the re frigerating and fragrant beads of their amber t us bees. In every toad there is a sack of pure water not at all connected with the kid neys. but serving as a reservoir, and fur nishing, doubtless, a part of the fluid which transpires from the skin. This fluid is very harmless in the common English and American toads. So, also, is the liquid which is largely secreted by the bean- bunch on each side of the toad’s ahapt-d head, as well as that which is so freely elec- o a toad in tad when you suddenly gr&tp land. Host persons are afraid of your hi obese fluids, and imagine them poisonous. They are mistaken. Not even Macbeth’s weird sisters could now find venom in the common toad. It is true, however, that these juices have a slightly irritating effect when applied to the eyes, or to a flesh wound, and that cat or dog does not like to take a second taste. But they are substan tially harmless. Coxdkmnxd to Dkath.—Sentence was pronouced upon Wm. Smart Bass aliaa Bill bmart Baas alias Smart Bass, by Judge Horne, for the murder of Jacob C. Cozatt, the second of September last, at Butler. Taylor county, Georgia, yesterday. Smart Buffers the extreme penalty of the law, by being hung by the neck until he be dead, on the 22d of November, 1867, at Butler, the scene of his crime. About 100 miles are now built, equipped and in running operation to the summit of the Sierra Nevada. Within a few days 38 miles, now graded, will be added, and the track carried entirely across the mountains to a point in the Great Salt Lake Valley, whence fur ther: progress will; be easy and rapid. Iron, materials and equipments are ready at hand for 300miles of road, and 10*000 men are employ ed In the construction. The local bussiness upon the completed portion surpasses all previous etslmate. The figures for the quarter ending August 81, are as follows in GOLD: Gboss Operating Net Earnings, Expenses, Earnings, $487,579 64 $86,548 47 $401,031 17 or at the rate of two millions per annum, of which more than three-fourths are net profit on less than 100 miles worked. This is upon tho actual, legiti mate traffic of the road, with its terminus in the mountains, and with only the normal ratio of government transportation, and is exclusive of the materials for the further extension of the road. The Company’s interest liabilities during the same period were less than $125,000. Add to this an ever-expanding through traffic and the proportions of the future business become immense. The Company are authorized to continue their line eastward until it shall meet and connect with the roads now building east of the Rocky Mountain ranges. Assuming that they will build and control half the en tire distance between San Francisco and the Missouri River, as now seems probable, the United States will have invested in the comple tion of 865 miles $88*592*000* or at the aver age rate of $35*000 per mile—not Including an absolute grant of 10*000*000 scree of the Public Lands. By becoming a joint investor in the magnificent enterprise, and by waiving its first lien in favor of the First Mortgage Bond holders, the General Government, in effect, INVITES THE CO-OPERATION OF PRIVAE CAPITAL ISTS, and has carefully guarded their interests against all ordinary contingencies. I would respectfully call the attention of the public to the fact that I have moved back to my old stand, where all those that want good goods can be accommodated.
