LOCAL affai 1 vnitw Summer.—We seem at present to he enjoying the season known aa Indian •Trimmer. We question whether or not these could lie called melancholy days; we hare never seen the rammer in a better humor than it seems to be now, and the moon, until It grew old, never performed 1ta functions with a more seemly grace or a more radiant face. But the dust! There's where the season pesters us. It is everywhere—in our eyes, ears and mouth, and shoe-deep in the streets. A few of autumn's tears would be a decided benefit now. A Now Style of Wnterfwil. The Era belongs, thank God, to no party; therfore, her advocacy of Gen. Grant for the Presidency, in 1888, is upon the broadest and most comprehensive national grounds. Era. The Era is in a great hurry to begin the Presidential contest. She is entirely too fast. If she don’t hold up a little, she will burst her boiler and spill her water.—La grange Deporter. Tub Coming Winter.—-Experienced weather prognosticators predict a hard winter. The sad and dismal “chirps-chirps” of birds high in the air are distinctly beard. The feathery tribe are passing south ward in large flocks. During the day some cease their flight, while others that fly almost incessantly, are so high as not to be observed by the naked eye. Flocks of cranes and wild geese have also been seen flying southward, earlier by far than is usual. This would seem to in dicate the probability of a hard winter. The European meteorologists are already predicting an early and hard winter, since the birds of passage have begun their mi grations southward at least a month earlier than common. paper ballet of the brain! We know yon aid not design all this mischief but was not sufficiently thoughtful that Full many a shaft, at random sent. . Finds mark the archer little meant—” and that shaft, too, a grey goose’s quill feathered with one of the old goose’s pin ions. It is awful! Doctor, do you pretend not to know that as soon ns the Era reached New York, that one news-boy would cry out, “Who killed the Bennetts?” when another would reply, Atlanta Era!—buy an Era?” If you, my dear brother, are ignorant of these great matters, your modesty or stu pidity is sublimely incomprehensible. BIW.GAKK.—These interesting personages are beginning to commence active hostili ties upon tiie good naturrd. We had three eral calls from the profession yesterday. Cobb.—It is a matter of doubt whether or not Cobb will send delegates to the pie bald powwow to-day or not. Little sissy < lay ton. however, is said to be in the ring, an-! w ill send up some of her hoys. United Status District Court—Jn immkmptcy.—In the District Court yester day. sitting as a Court in bankruptcy, Judge Erskine ordered the 12th of the rules in bankruptcy, promulged June 27th, 1887. to he amended—the rule, when amen ded. to read as follows: ••The warrant under Form No. 8 will specify two or more newspapers, in each of which the notice shall he published once, or oftener, as the Judge may direct. In the warrant under Form N. 59 the Judge will also name the newspapers in wbieb the notice shall he published. When cither of the above, or any other publica tion. appears in two or more newspapers, if correctly made in ouc. no accidental error in the others shall affect the sufficiency of the publication. The Marshal, Clerk and every register and assignee, when re- •qnin-d to publish any notice or advertise ment. shall return into Court a copy cut from each newspaper of each notice or ad vert i-« incut as published, with a certificate ♦•no* ing that the required publication has been duly made.” On the announcement of this rule, Judge Erskine observed that it was essential to justice that notices in cases of bankeuptcy should lie disseminated as nearly as possi- •le: that this was due to the creditors and others, lie also remarked that it was highly proper that one of the papers selec ted for publishing notices should be, if possible, in the county of the bankrupt’s residence. And when this cannot be done there, in a paper in a contiguous county. An additional rule in bankruptcy was also adopted by the Court, which is as fol lows: Rule No. 2$.—“When, during any exam ination betore a Register, a question is asked and objected to, the examination .•hall not lie suspended, but shall proceed, the Register passing upon each question as it arises; and at the close of the examina tion he may entertain a motion to strike out the evidence objected to, or to compel answers to the questions overruled, and on that, if requested, certify the matter for the Judge's decision.” After a short session in Bankruptcy, the Tfistrir* Court was opened according to adjournment. An or Jer was passed for the distribution of money claimed under various execu tions. Also, an order relative to a large ot of manufactured tobacco seized for violation of Revenue laws. After transac tion of some other business Court ad journed to the 30th inst. “ A Stitch in Time ” Nbkded.—The city authorities are hereby informed that there is an open well on Marietta street, opposite the gas works. This well has been par tially protected for sometime by the re mains of a well-house, bat the increasing cold of the weather has transported the greater portion of the frame to somebody’s fire. Now the mouth ©f the well, in two feet of the sidewalk, is yawning for some one to tumble in. After some unfortunate one has fallen in this well, it will be too late for the authorities to set about remedy ing the evil. At present it is extremely dangerous, to say the least of it. Powwow.—The “Conservative Union” men, whoever they are, who call themselves so, hold a meeting to-day to nominate can didates for the Convention. It is expected that the three counties of the District will be represented. We suppose Union men can hold themselves easy until the young Samson is born. We doubt if he will hurt any one much. Mayor’s Court.—The Mayor held his hobdomadel Seance yesterday morning As usual there was a full attendance of white, tan and black, to whom {his Honor dispensed the usual amount of justice. This Court has some terrors to the unruly portion of the community, and yet we see at almost any sitting, faces with which all who attend have grown familiar. Adjourned Term.—The probability now is that this Court will not be able to dis charge all the business on docket, and that Judge Collier will call an adjourned term. He has dispatched an immense amount of business during the Court, but has not and will not be able to work through the crowded docket. Opinion Job Office.—By reference to another column, it will be seen that the Opinion Office is now prepared to do, in the neatest and most approved style of the Art, and on reasona ble terms, every variety and style of Job Print ing, to which we Invite the attention of onr friends and the pnblic generally. For full partic ulars of the various olasses of work we are pre pared to execute, see notice in another column. We also have, in connection with our Job Office, first-class Ruling Machine, an acquisition which enables us to execute and rule to order any and every variety and style of work done in any printing establishment in this section of the co tip try. Affray.—We are irtformed that a diffi culty occurred at the National Garden on Saturday last between two men, one of whom, a German, got his jaw-bone smashed considerably by a slung shot, or a brick bat, from the hand of the other. Our information is that the difficulty arose over a game of cards. Gen. Wager Swayne, Commander of the Sub-District of Alabama, was in the city yesterday, a guest of the National. Among other visitors at the 6ame hotel we noticed Gen. A. R. Z. Dawson, of the old volunteer army, who commanded the Post of Macon shortly after the close of the war. “ Courtesy ” is too frequently employed as a cloak for Hypocrisy, to admit the can dor of boasts of honest intentions. Cotton in Montgomery.—The Adver tiser, of yesterday, quotes cotton at 12>£ for strict middling, buyer paying tax. Cotton in Columbus.—Cotton was more active in C©lumbns on the 17th, it closed at 15jfeal6c for middlings. Communicated.] Editors Opinion: Is it true, as whispered in certain localities, that one man on the Union Reconstruction ticket will probably be forced to the disagreeable alternative of either pnblicly pledging himself to support the Congressional Reconstruction ticket, or of giving place to some one whose politi cal faith is less equivocal? By the way, tcho is this doubtftil character? Who is it that is thus trying to run with the hare and bay with the hounds? Let us have his name. Paul Pby. Tub Georgia National Bank, until fur ther notice, will sell exchange at par. t Tin- Courts.—On Tuesday a negro wo man was tried before Judge Collier on the ■?barjre of murdering her infant. The jury Sound her not guilty, the evidence being purely circumstantial. On Thursday W. II. Joiner was tried •or the offense of larceny after trust and -jcqnitted on an error in the indictment. On framing the jury for the investiga tion of this ease an interesting point was Raised by General Gartroll, counsel for the defense, who objected to the array on the ^onnd that the defendant ebould be tried before a jury that was competent to try him at the timeof the alleged commission ©f the offense. The Court overruled the objection on tb* point that the jury organised under Qeweral Pope's order was still © jury legal ised by the law of Georgia and competent to hear the investigation and pronounce upon the offense. On yesterday the ease of Jos. T. Porter, charged with embezzling the city funds, was called, but continued by the defense. On Tuesday next the case of Loyd, charged with killing Conner, will be com menced. This will probably occupy seve ral days. Ridicule more Potent than Argu ment.
