«ess they thought would result from the attempt to open the river for navi gation. One of them remarked, “Oh, there will be no trouble about that! There’s only one shoal worthy of any note whatever, and that is at Governor Bro wn’s farm; but we can easily reme dy the difficulty there by the expendi ture of a few hundred dollars. But how is it, Colonel, east of this point? Are there many shoals of much impor tance between here and Ellijay?” Colonel Carter hesitated for a min ute, as if studying how the land lay, to the best of his recollection; and then answered: “Well, really, Ido not re member of but one.” “Ah! indeed!” said Uncle Sam’s officer, “if that be correct, it is good news; for we can in that event probably arrange to open the river for naviga tion clear up to Ellijay; but, by the way, colonel, where’s the shoal to which you refer?” “Oh!” remarked Colonel Carter, with a sly twinkle in his eye, “it’s all the way from here to Ellijay.” When it is taken into consideration that Ellijay is 1,310 feet above the sea, and Carter’s landing is hardly more than 700 feet; and that, in an airline, Ellijay and Carter’s Landing are hardly more than twelve miles distant from each other, the force of the colonel’s remark is easily appreci ated. “The Cleveland Route.” When the present General Passenger Agent of the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia railroad issued his time eards and other advertisements for the purpose of securing travel to Washing ton, D. C., and return,to the inaugura tion of President Cleveland, he termed his route the “Cleveland Route,” the name being peculiarly appropriate, because the line ran via Clev land, Tenn., and the tourist travel being solicited over that line to th. inaugura tion of President Cleveland. For some unknown reason he drop ped this title after the inauguration exercises were over, and has never at tempted to revive it. The present, however, is a most ap propriate time for it to be again taken up, inasmuch as all East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia trains between Chattanooga and Atlanta now run around via Cleveland, Tenn., or a dis tance of some 17 miles further than if they went into Chattanooga via their Ooltewah cut-off, which has been /abandoned on account of the cave-in of their tunnel under Missionary Ridge. Cleveland is a beautiful little town — «ne which possesses many attractions, and it is not to be wondered at that the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia railroad should like to see it prominently advertised both in its own circulars and in those of other roads. The Great Krnnesaw Route, the short line between Atlanta and Chat tanooga, therefore, extends its congrat ulations and best wishes to the “Cleve and Route.” The Kennesaw Route always ahead. Mailed free. &eorgia, the Empire State of the South. Her gain in population from 1870 to 1880 over 30 per cent. Gain in wealth in same time, eighty-one million dollars. In the past twelve years the staple crops have increased as follows: Corn over 200 per cent., wheat 600 per cent., rye 75 per cent., Irish potatoes 10) per cent, sweet potatoes -100 per cent., sugarcane and sorghum 800 per cent., and other products in about the same ratio. The cotton crop of Georgia in 1870 was 473.934 bales, and in 1880 it was 814,441 bales. Iler farm products in 1870 amounted to $80,390,228, which, in 1880, increased to the enormous amount of $125,- 000,000. In 1870 Georgia had 69,956farm5, and in 1880 she had 138,622, an increase of over 100 per cent. The lumber products of Georgia this year will exceed $70,000,000. Georgia leads the ’South in every staple manufacture. We have the largest peach orchards in the world, while grapes and many other fruits are very profitably, but not extensively grown in every portion of the State, and shipped to Northern markets. As for Georgia melons, while the supply is enormous, the demand is much greater. We say to you, now is the time to c me South, while you can make cheap and prof itable investments, in the most inviting sec tion of the United States, where soil, cli mate, water, seasons, and low prices of property, are all that could be desired by the manufacturer, the large planter, the stock raiser, and the dairy, fruit, vegetable and poultry farmer. Henderson, the efficient Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Georgia.
