guests in the house. A number of
States are represented. Hours, the
bright happy hours, away from care
and labor, go flitting by on noiseless
wings. One may literally “dream the
happy hours away” in this lovely
place. The house has all the modern
improvements. Water and gas through
out the building, large and airy rooms,
handsomely furnished, a table supplied
with the very best, polite and attentive
servants, and rates moderate, have
made this one of the best known and
most popular houses in North Georgia.
In order to meet the increasing de
mand for additional accommodations,
Mr. Whitlock is now erecting a wing
to the main building which will con
tain twenty rooms.
This place is growing in popularity
with Northern and Western people.
Some stop here during the winter, but
the great majority stop sometime in the
early winter, on their way to Thomas
ville or Florida, and then return here
for another sojourn in the spring. Ma
rietta is the halfway house, coming
and going, for many. It is most ad
mirably located and suited for this,
and if the wide awake citizens of the
place will push it, hundreds will make
this their stopping place. What Thom
asville is to South Georgia, Marietta
may be to North Georgia. There is a
reciprocity of interests between the
two places which we hope to see culti
vated and increased.
There is much here to interest. Ken
nesaw mountain is but two miles away,
where the men of the South met North
ern foemen in bloody battle, and whose
crest was crimsoned with the purest
blood in the South; whose base was
strewn with the dead who wore the
blue, and whose sides were bathed
with the blood of the men of the North
and the men of the South, as they
fought on that 27th day of June, up
and down again those rugged slopes,
falling face to foe, yielding up thou
sands of lives on the altar of their
country. Now many of them sleep in
this mountain city. Over eleven thou
sand Federals are buried here, their
graves being cared for by the govern
ment, while two thousand five hundred
Southern boys sleep in a neglected spot.
They, both, have answered the last
roll call, and will only appear again
when the final reveille shall sound.
The great Kennesaw mills, with a ca
pacity for turning out four hundred
and fifty barrels of Hour per day, ate
here; the largest chair manufactory
in the South; large paper mills, and
the most extensive marble works, north
or south, are among the many manu
facturing interests of the place. There
are good livery stables and beautiful
drives, while hotels and boarding hous
es are abundant. The Journal, by
Mr. Neal, is doing much toward boom
ing this fast growing place. Atlanta
is within forty-five minutes run on half
a dozen trains a day. The place is
one thousand and sixty feet above the
sea level, free from malaria and that next
greatest pest, mosquitoes. The Mari
etta and North Georgia railroad, run
ning to Murphy, N. C., has its junc
tion with the W. & A. railroad at this
place. It penetrates one of the finest
and richest mineral and marble sections
of the South. Gobo county is one of
the richest and most progressive coun
ties in the State. Farming is carried
on systematically, scientifically and
profitably. The no-fence law prevails
in several districts. The farming lands
are rolling and yield readily to culti
vation. They are not being impover
ished, but improved.
“Bill Arp” lives in Bartow county,
only about a half dozen miles from
Cartersville, on the Western & Atlantic
railroad.
