A Brace of “Corundums.”
“Say, Pompey,” said Uncle ’Polio,
knocking the ashes out of his cob pipe
and filling it up again with a fresh
charge of leaf tobacco, “le’ me ax ye
a corundum. An’ I bet, by ganny,
dat ye can’t answer it.”
“I bet I kin, Uncle ’Polio, if ye gi’
me three guesses,” retorted Pompey
very confidently, as he spit at a chip
about five feet away, but missed it
fairly, and added, “Dar, dat don’t
count. I know I kin guess better dan
what I can spit so fur off*.”
“Well den,” said Uncle ’Polio,
“Mister Good-Guesser, try yo’ mouf on
dis: What am more welcome to de
lips dan good brown cooked ’possum
an’ ’tater, wid gravy floatin ’round ’em?’’
“Why a kiss from a feller’s sweet
heart, ob course. Dar’, I dun guess’d
it, now pay de bet, like a man,” ex
claimed Pompey in a tone of confident
triumph.
“He! he! no, sir. Yass, den, but,
—ay yi! Dogged if I don’t t’ink you
b’leebs ye got it. Well, so, so; —dat
carries me way back to when I uster
set in de corner wid Maria by de pine
knot light atter her daddy an’ mammy
crawled off to bed. Well, Pomp, dat
wuzn’t de answer; but hit’s so good dat
I won’t take yer money, you can keep
it.”
“Yass, I reckon so, dat beat any
answer ye had to yer own corundum;
but now, Uncle ’Polio, I put you on
de ’xamination stool, wid dis question:
What institution in de community am
it dat does de people more substanch
good an’ conduces more to der happi
piness dan enny udder? Now, I got
ye on dat. Heh ?”
“Pshaw, nigger,” said Uncle ’Polio,
with almost a contemptuous look at
being considered so ignorant, “any
chap could answer dat. It am de rail
road whay dey call de ‘Sidetrack,’ ob
course. What ye got to say now?”
“You kin hab my hat,” answered
Pompey, throwing it down on the
ground with a “flop.” “I orter hab
been knowin’ better dan to t’ink you
couldn’t answer so easy a corundum as

THE WESTERN & ATLANTIC
Railroad’s Region for Tourists,
Capitalists and Immigrants.
The attention of the American people is
now, more than ever before, being directed
to the South as a profitable field for invest
ments, and for settlement, by people from
the north and east.
Without premising further, it may be
stated that the territory tributary to the
Western and Atlantic Kailroad offers more
advantages for both capitalists and immi
-1 grants than probably any other section in
the southeast.
The requirements sought by both classes,
I are health, reasonable fertility of soil, ac
cessibility to markets for the disposal of the
surplus farm or manufactured products, and
such grades of society as are agreeable and
necessary to mental and moral advance
ment.
By the census of 1880, it was shown that
this region was practically the granary of
Georgia. It produces enough provisions to
supply itself and to ship some surplus to
Atlanta and to the other Southern markets.
Within these counties, also, there were rais
ed the same year over 80,000 bales of cot
ton; hence, here is the field for cotton fac
tories.
It has also been shown that within these
counties there are found 68 different vari
ties of minerals, and 71 distinct varieties of
wood; hence establishments for the manu
facture of iron, of furniture, etc., would find
here profitable return for investment.
On this line, it may be stated that the
water powers in these counties are suflicien.
for the use of hundreds of manufacturing
establishments; but to supplement this in a
very practical manner, the Western and
Atlantic Railroad Company has made re
duced rates on manufacturing coal to all of
its local stations; and it can justly claim to
be the only railroad in the southeast which
has published to each of its local stations a
! rate on coal for manufacturing purposes
I which is very decidedly less than it is au-
I thorized by law to charge.
For instance, by reason of these rates, at
Marietta, Ga., manufacturing coal can be
laid down at about §2.25 per ton, and at
points noithward toward Chattanooga the
rates grow less, and consequently, the prices
grow correspondingly less.
On manufactured products shipped from
the establishments on the line of the West
ern and Atlantic Railroad, this company
instead of demanding its full local rates,
has made practically prorated rates, as
though they were through points.
For instance, from the cotton factory at
Adairsville to all points southward,are made
the same ratts as from Chattanooga, ex
cept where the local rates would be less
than through proportion, in which case the
rates are less; and from the same factory to
northern and western points the rates are
the same as from Atlanta, except where the
local rate is less than the W. & A. propor
tion of the through rate in which event, the
rate is less than the Atlanta rate.
The same rule will apply to all manu
factured products from all the local stations
on this line, The company considers that
its true interest is best subserved in pursu
ing a liberal and enlightened policy which
will tend to put allot’ its local stations as
near as practicable on the same basis as
through points.
The effect of this policy is shown in the
fact that while the great depression of busi
ness during the past year has affected all
other business in an unfavorable manner,
the local business of the Western and At
lantic Railroad has shown a steady and very
gratifying increase; and there are at present
in course of construction several establish-
I ments at local stations which will be a large
j source of revenue to the company, “Come
I thou with us, and we will do thee good,” is
a scriptural message which the Western and
Atlantic Railroad extends to all.
, The best criterion for judging whether a
corporation is worthy of general support is
to see how it acts towards the communities
which it has absolutely in its power.
The Western and Atlantic Railroad in
this respect invites comparison with any of
its connections, or the other roads in this
region, and defies proof of a more liberal
policy by any railroad corporation.
The geographical location of this railroad,
! and of its local stations, are such as will al
ways cause manufacturing establishments
hereon located to be able to hold their own
with any others in this latitude.
Around them, or immediately tributary
to them, are the rough materials which can
'be put into artificial shapes. Immediately
south, southeast and southwest is the great
consuming section of Georgia, r londa, bouth
Carolina and Alabama. , .
The advantage in point of time is. in favor
of these manufactories as against their north-

ern and western competitors. A merchant
desiring a car-load of flour, for instance, can
get it about two days sooner from the
Adairsville mill than from those at Cincin
nati, or points in Illinois, etc. The chair
factory at Marietta can lay down furniture
in Macon, Ga., two or three days sooner
than those located in St. Louis, Chicago or
Cincinnati, and at rates of freight which are
materially less.
In the United States Census report of 1880
is the following statement :
“The manufacture of cooperage is in its
infancy, and this and other industries re
quiring an abundant and cheap supply of
hard wood, seem destined soon to reach an
enormous development in the upper districts
of Georgia.”
But one of the greatest possibilities for
capitalists has as yet been hardly touched
upon. This is the manufacture of iron
goods. In Bartow county, for instance, on
and near the line of the Western and Atlant
ic Railroad are iron and maganese ore beds
which several generations will not be able
1 to exhaust.
From Rogers Station, alone, about fifty
miles above Atlanta, before the present de
pression in pig-iron, there were shipped
about two thousand car-loads of iron ore per
annum. From this same station and from
Cartersville, manganese in large lots is now
being shipped to Pittsburg and to Eu
rope. Before the war, at Etowah, only
four miles south of Rogers, was a very
flourishing blast furnace. Taking Rogers
as a central point in Bartow county, coke,
can be laid down at about §3.00 per ton.
Immediately at the station are very large
deposits of lime-rock and of sand-stone. A
large creek flowing by the station would
furnish what water was necessary. From
Rogers to all western and northwestern
points could be made the same rates as
from Anniston or Birmingham, and from
Rogers to New York, Boston and other east
ern points could be made less rates on pig
iron than from either Birmingham, Chatta
nooga or Anniston.
To parties desiring to go into grape cul
ture, no better region could be found in the
south; and to those desirous of engaging in
truck farming, or the dairy business, here
would be the choicest region.
From any point on the line of the West
ern and Atlantic Railroad it averages less
than three hours by passenger train to Chat
tanooga, Rome and Atlanta, and to any of
these points from a Western and Atlantic
station the distance is not more than five
hours by passenger train schedule. From
Atlanta, the Western and Atlantic Rail
road runs six passenger trains northward,
per day, and to Atlanta, it runs southward,
five passenger trains per day, all into and
out of Union Passenger Depot; consequent
ly, parties located at any station on this line
would possess practically suburban advan
tages.
VARIETIES OF WOOD AND ORE ON THE LINE
OF THE WESTERN AND ATLANTIC
RAILROAD.
At the International Cotton Expositon at
Atlanta, Ga., in 1881, specimens of wood
and ores were on exhibition from the coun
ties, traversed by, or tributary to. the
the Western and Atlantic Kailroa I. These
showed that there were seventy-one different
varieties of wood which grew in these coun
ties, and over sixty different varieties of
minerals which cotdd be found in the same.
The forest growth is pretty much the
same in all the counties; hence, was not
classified as to divisions, but the ore speci
mens were shown in such manner as to indi
cate their territorial divisions.
