By the U .ited States Census of 1880, it is shown that Atlanta stands third among all the cities in the Unit ed States in the great proportion of its population who are engaged in gainful pursuits; in other words, in making a living for themselves. Lawrence, Mass., and Fall River, Mass., are the only two cities in the country which have a greater proportion of their pop ulation engaged in what are termed “gainful pursuits.” We have not noticed the figures this year; but several years ago we saw a comparative statement of the number of children in the public schools of At lanta and Boston, Mass., respectively, and the astonishing fact was shown that Atlanta has proportionately a greater number of children in her pub lic schools than Boston, which has for many years past been considered the centre of education of the United States.
