ern and western competitors. A merchant
desiring a car-load of Hour, for instance, can
get it about two days sooner from the
Adairsville mill than from those at Cincin
nati, or points in Illinois, etc. The chair
factory at Marietta can lay down furniture
in Macon, Ga., two or three days sooner
than those located in St. Louis, Chicago or
Cincinnati, and at rates of freight which are
materially 'ess.
In the United States Census report of 1880
is the following statement:
“The manufacture of cooperage is in its
infancy, and this and other industries re
quiring an abundant and cheap supply of
hard wood, seem destined soon to reach an
enormous development in the upper districts
of Georgia.”
But one of the greatest possibilities for
capitalists has as yet been hardly touched
upon. This is the manufacture of iron
goods. In Bartow county, for instance, on
and near the line of the Western and Atlant
ic Railroad are iron and maganese ore beds
which several generations will not be able
to exhaust.
From Rogers Station, alone, about fifty
miles above Atlanta, before the present de
pression in pig-iron, there were shipped
about two thousand car-loads of iron ore per
annum. From this same station and from
Cartersville, manganese in large lots is now
being shipped to Pittsburg and to Eu
rope. Before the war, at Etowah, only
four miles south of Rogers, was a very
nourishing blast furnace. Taking Rogers
as a central point in Bartow county, coke,
can be laid down at about $3.00 per ton.
Immediately at the station are very large
deposits of lime-rock and of sand-stone.A
large creek flowing by the station would
furnish what water was necessary. From
Rogers to all western and northwestern
] oints could be made the same rates as
irom Anniston or Birmingham, and from
Rogers to New York, Boston and other east
ern points could be made less rates on pig
iron than from either Birmingham, Chatta
nooga or Anniston.
To parties desiring to go into grape cul
ture, no better region could be found in the
south; and to those desirous of engaging in
truck farming, or the dairy business, here
would be the choicest region.
From any point on the line of the West
ern and Atlantic Kailroad it averages less
than three hours by passenger train to Chat
tanooga, Rome and Atlanta, and to any of
these points from a Western and Atlantic
station the distance is not more than five
hours by passenger train schedule. From
Atlanta, the Western and Atlantic Rail
road runs six passenger trains northward,
per day, and to Atlanta, it runs southward,
live passenger trains per day, all into and
out of Union Passenger Depot; consequent
ly, parties located at any station on this line
would possess practically suburban advan
tages.
VARIETIES OF WOOD AND ORE ON THE LINE
OF THE WESTERN AND ATLANTIC
RAILROAD.
At the International Cotton Expositon ai
Atlanta, Ga., in 1881, specimens of wood
and ores were on exhibition from the coun
ties, traversed by, or tributary to, the
the Western and Atlantic Rai Iron I. These
showed that there were seventy-one different
varieties of wood which grew in these conn
ties, and over sixty different varieties of
minerals which could be found in the same.
The forest growth is pretty much the
same in all the counties; hence, was not
classified as to divisions, but the ore speci
mens were shown in such manner as to indi
cate their territorial divisions.

THE KENNESAW GAZETTE.
“Chestnuts.”
Now, reader, you think we are go
ing to get off an old joke; but that’s
just what you know about our inten
tions. We are in solid, sober earnest
when we assert that the Western & At
lantic Railroad runs through or near
the region where there are more chest
nuts than anywhere else in the south.
Leaving the Western & Atlantic at
Marietta, one can go up into the moun
tainous region of northern Georgia,
where they are gathered by the bushel;
or going via the Western & Atlantic
to Dalton, and thence taking a hack
or other conveyance out to the famous
Cohutta Springs, in Murray county,
Georgia, you find yourself immediate
ly at the foot of the many-peaked,
beautiful blue Cohutta Mountains,
where there are immense forests of
chestnut trees.
We remember some years ago going
with a party from Cohutta Springs
back ;nto the mountains about nine
miles, to the midst of the chestnut re
gion. We had a long pull to get there.
It was up-hill, or, we should say, up
mountains, all the way. Riding on
horse-back was impossible; but we had
a horse along, on which we had strap
ed our blankets and other sleeping ar
rangements.
Stopping at the beautiful mountain
stream about five miles or more beyond
the Cohutta Springs hotel we took din
uer, and, although it was a plain one
of cold biscuits and beefsteak, with
some syrup to sweeten off with, yet it
was a meal which was immensely en
joyed. This stopping-place was imme
diately at the foot of “the great climb,”
as from this point there is over a half
mile of very steep ascent.
We, boys, took off our coats, to light
en ourselves as much as possible, and
as the horse was considered strong and
healthy, they were strapped on top of
the blankets above him. Among
these coats was that of the leader of
the party, and in the pocket of that
coat was a bottle of syrup.
We started, and so did the horse;
but before he had gone more than a
hundred steps a dull sound was heard,
and then a sharp crack, as of some
thing breaking; and it was found that
the syrup man’s coat had dropped off
the horse, and the bottle had broken
into a score of pieces, and the pocket
was full of the escaping sweet fluid.
An immense amount of amusement
was created at the syrup carrier’s mis
fortune, and the regret over the loss of
it for our use at meals was altogether
done away with by the comical circum
stances under which it was lost.
At about sun-set we reached a log
cabin, away back in the mountains,
which was located in the midst of the
chestnut forests. This had been put
up by the mountaineers for the accom
modation of persons going up there co
spend the night. A few chestnuts
were picked up before supper, and, af
ter having a good round of jokes, etc.,
the party retired at about ten o”clock.
Our chum, whose coat had suffered
the syrup-spilling misfortune, conclud
ed that the fun ought not to end at
his expense; consequently, after the
whole party, who were lying on the
floor with a couple of quilts under each
of them and a blanket or two over
them, had fallen asleep, he silently
arose and buried about a double hand
ful of chestnuts in the ashes, and then
laid down for developments.
These developments, (or “devil-up
ments,”) came within a very few min
utes. There was an explosion as of a
volley of musketry —the ashes and
coals flew over the entire room for a
space of ten or fifteen feet, and within
the next few seconds a general scene
of excitement was manifest. One of
the largest live coals had fallen on the
blanket just above the throat of the
writer; but this was knocked away be
fore he was awakened, by his next part
ner.
It was some minutes before quiet was
restored and sleep stole away the senses
of all the occupants of the lone cabin
amid the mountains.
The next day the chestnut hunt be
gan in earnest, and it is a matter
of private record that the writer
and his partner, who was the hero of
the broken syrup bottle, picked up a
bushel and a half of real, healthy
north Georgia chestnuts. The attend
ing scenes amid the hundreds of gi
gantic chestnut trees which formed the
forest, will never be forgotten.
Another night was spent at the log
cabin, and the next day a late dinner
was eaten at the Cohutta Springs hotel,
and the sport was over; but not its
recollections, which have been green
in the writer’s memory during all the
vears past.
We will only remark that within
the next few days after our party came
down from the mountains, there was
seen a group of mountaineers who
brought down 18 bushels, and another
who brought down 21 bushels of chest
nuts, and altogether, probably 60 or
80 bushels of chestnuts passed by the
Cohutta Springs hotel within about a
week, to say nothing of those which
sought markets by other outlets.
The chestnut season among the Co
huttas runs from the first of October to
the middle of November.
Your Choice of Three Routes to
Florida.
The Western & Atlantic Railroad
and the Central Railroad of Georgia
are the only lines by which tourists from
the Northwest can come via Chatta
nooga and Atlanta and have the choice
of three routes to Florida, viz: via Sa
vannah, via Albany and Ty-Ty or via
Albany and Thomasville.
They thus have the privilege on
tourists’ tickets to stop over at Marietta,
the favorite fall and winter resort of
Georgia, or Atlanta, the famous Gate
City of the South, or at Thomasville
or Savannah.
These are superb advantages which
no other companies running through
car lines to Florida can offer to the
traveling public.
The Western and Atlantic railroad
runs more passenger trains over the
same rails than any other railroad in .
the South.
