The Lion Picnic.
By all odds the biggest picnic which
has gone out of Atlanta during this
season was that which went to Kenne
saw Mountain and Brown Park on
Saturday, May 31. The picnic train,
which left Atlanta at 7: 50 a. m., con
sisted of 13 coaches filled to overflow
ing with young people and their par
ents and teachers. Besides these oth
ers came up on the trains leaving At
lanta later. Altogether there were
possibly a thousand or more of the
happy excursionists.
To a great extent the picnic was the
outgrowth of the publishers of the At
lanta Evening Journal, who are raising
a fund to buy a lion for the children
of Atlanta; the gross revenue on the
tickets being divided between the rail
road and the lion fund, —there being
as it were the W. & A.’s share and the
lion’s share.
A great number of the excursionists
went on Kennesaw Mountain and en
joyed the magnificent view from its
summit. About noon the train left
Elizabeth at the foot of the mountain
and dropped down to Marietta where
they spent the afternoon in the beau
tiful Brown Park.
The cut on the first page is an ideal
picture. If this wasn’t carried out by
every one who went on this excursion,
it is an ideal picture anyhow.
Interstate Commerce.
The Interstate Commerce Commis
sion decided the case of Stone & Gar
ten against the Detroit, Grand Haven
& Milwaukee Railway Company in fa
vor of the complainants. The main
opinion was written by chairman Coo
ley, Commissioners Morrison and
Schoonmaker concurring and express
ing additional views and a dissenting
opinion was filed by Commissioner
Bragg.
This case involves the question of the
lawfulness of the free cartage of freights
by railroad companies to and from sta
tions on their lines and the shippers’
place of business, when such free cart
age is not given to the shippers at an
other station on the same line taking
the same grouped rate.
The commission rules that the prac
tice is in effect the giving of a rebate
from the regular published tariff rate,
and in this case also violates the long
and short haul clause of the law by mak
ing the charge for shorter distance to lo
nia,Mich. ,greater than toGrand Rapids,
Mich., a longer distance. The railroad
company is ordered to cease and desist
from making such free cartage at
Grand Rapids.
You can leave Kansas City one
morning and reach Atlanta the even
ing of the next day if your ticket read
over the W. & A.
