able thing in Cherokee is two twin daugh

which cannot he told apart by their parents
except that a piece of nbbon be tied on oi.e
or the other's arms. They are the 11th and

think of this? Until another development
be made we shall claim that Cherokee is
ahead. We wish the proud father ami
mother much joy and trust the twins will
have a pleasant voysge through life.

—McDuffie Journal: On Monday last
Accident occurred on the plantation of Mr.
Alvin Wilson, about four miles from
Thomson, by which a colored child was
hun.t to death. Chandler Livingston and
family are tenants of Wilaon. Living
aton'a wife left two of her childen in her
house on Monday and went out in the plan
lation. Home one of the children came to
her and lohl her that her little sister was
lying out in the yard. The mother went
immediately, and found the child, a little
girl aged about foi
burnt to death,
clothing of the child caught fire in the
house, and the little creature ran out in the
yard, hut no help being near, the flames
soon killed her.
—Mcl luffie Journal: We announced some
time ago that Mr. John K. Smith, after
thorough (tersonal inspection of the new
process cotton pin, had determined to erect
one on his plantation, near this place, and c
number of inquiries have been made as to
the nrugres of the undertaking.
Hmith has purchased and received a splen
did new engine for running the attach
ment. hut he informs us that he has met
with some difficulty in procuring the requi
site machinery. Owing to some disagree
ment with the manager of Clement’s estate,
in which the patent is vested, Mr. Htrib-
ling, of Carolina, declines to act longer as
agent for the attachment, and toobtain the
machinery application must lie made to the
manager at Corinth, Mississippi. This,of
course, will necessitate delay, but Mr.
Mmith has not abandoned, but only post
poned, his plans for operating the attach
ment. In the meantime his new engine
will lie used on hia plantation for other
purposes.

—Berrien County News: While .in Irwin
last week we were shown a wolf pit. It
showed signs of antiquity, and we learned
that it bad been dug more than fifty years
The pit is situated close to the road, and
alxmi a quarter of a mile north of Brushy
Creek church. It is a circular ditch about
three or four feet wide and perhaps eight
feet deep. There is a small island in the
center, on which is placed the carca
deer or sheep, or any bait that will tempt
the appetite of the wolf. Slender reed* are
placed across the ditch, and they are thinly
covered with straw. This gives it the ap
pearance of the surrounding wood*,
and the wolf does not hesitate to step
boldly on the slender bridge, when he
lands at the bottom, where he impatiently
awaits the arrival of the executioner the
next morning. This pit was dug by Mr.
Jacob l'aulk and tne late Captain Daniel
Henderson, when the latter was a young
man. It is one of the relics of the primi
tive days of Irwin, when steel traps were
unknown, or at least not ”eomc-tt-able,’’
and when the red man made foray* on this
section in quest of the nimble deer and
other choice game.

—The Columbus Knquirer says that Mr.
N. A. Herndon, living near Glenalta, Ma
rion county, was killed Saturday afternoon.
He was at the “grocery,” a popular stopping
place for the neighbors, in the vicinity of
the town, and having imbibed pretty freely
with his friends, soon became intoxicated.
About two o’clock he left the store for home
on a very spirited and almost unmanagea
ble horse. Alter riding some distance, it is
supposed that the animal took fright at
some object on the roadside and threw the
rider. Mr. H was found by tiartie* passing
on the road with his skull mashed in on
the back of his hood. Near where he was
lying on the side of the road was a jag?
stump, and it is supposed from the tuasl
on the stump and the bruises on the body
that he was thrown upon iu When found
he was insensible, and was taken by the
rangers back to the store, where he died
in about an hour. Mr. Herndon was thirty-
two year* old. and, we are informed, wa*
well and favorably known, he being once a
schoolmaster in the neighborhood for a
number of years. At the time of his death
he was a farmer of considerable mean*.

Cotton nt Liverpool.
Smith, Edwards A Co., in their monthly circu
lar, dated Liverpool! March 31, thu* reviews the
tradition cf the cotton trade at that point:
'The prospects of our market at present do not
invite any special comment, the interest iu the
American crop has subsided, and speculations
about its extent have cea--cd to engage attention.
The Bombay crop is evidently a large one, and its
quality is first-class; indeed the improvement in
the character of Indian cotton of late years is
quite reknartoible, some of the growths being
now in cleanliness and spinning power almost
equal ti American. Upon the whole, it seems
not unlikely that India will ship IV ,001 bales more
to Europe than ia I87U. The general aspect ot the
cotton supply question is much as we described
it iu our lost. There is little enough to ca-ry u*
through the year, and yet there is no urgent fear
of such extreme tcarcity as we experienced last
autumn. It is already coming to be prettv evi
dent that a great increase of planting alii take
place in America this year. Planters have derived
association next month.
