hist night the fact of Dr. Bruce’s drowning.
Thesnuam in which he lost his life is a
small one. but after a hard rain rises with
great rapidity and flows with frightful ve
locity. Dr. Bruce while in distress was
by a gentleman. Dr. Harris, who lives
just beyond the corporate limits, on his
way home. Dr. Hams saw some one in
the stream and heard cries for help. Jle
waded in us far as he could go and in a loud
voice told Dr. Bruo*. not knowing however
in the darkness who he was, to cling to a
small tree near by until he. Dr. H , could
go and get help. He could only hear a
voice amt see a human form when the
lightning would tl oh vividly. When he
returned nothing could be heard or seen,
and he presumed that whoever the unfor
tunate man was had e?c iped. His family
was in deeiwst distress amt agony all night
Saturday night. Early Sun lay morning a
large crowd went out and foui d his buggy
some distance from the road turntd up side
down and his horse at a gentleman's house
not far off About 8 o’clock his b nly was
found and was brought to town. His death
is a public calamity and is univer
sally mourned. No man in the
south was more zealous and
faithful in the discharge of his professional
duty. His ability entitled him to a reputa
tion wider than »tate IkmitmIs, hut his mod
esty intervened and held the laurt-1 crown

buried in Lauivl Hill cmieierv. His
funeral was largely attended by all c-asses.

Albany, Msy 20.—The fifth fair of the
Southwest Georgia industrial association
opened here yesterday. The attendance is
good, though not such as it wight have
been, had not the recent rains given snch
an impetus to the gras* crop throughout
this aec.ion of country. At present this is
demanding all the time and energy of our
people everywhere around. With stands
and pra»p<ct« ao exceptionally fi.titering as
they are now. farmers are little disposed to
lose tbe time thxt would, under other cir-
cumstaLo**. be not unprofitably spent at
ouch an exhibit m as this one. As art
exhibition, this fair is on the whole
much Lexter than was antic'|ut!ed.
The agricultural and horti
cultural displays are better in quality,
though not ao varied and abundant as at
former fain* held hy this association. A
■arg* number of excellent specimens of
growing wheat, oafs, rye and corn, are on
exhibition from different sections, showing
how wonderfully these croj* have come
out within the past six or eight «evka of
good farming weather. The small grain
p in southwest Georgia is by uo means a
ure. notwithstanding the gloomy out
look a few weeks since The display of
field and garden produce* is in s roe res-
s remarkable. We have never seen
r and larger s| ecitnens of |*o*arofc3, car
rots, beets, onions, parsley, celery, cab
bages and “garden truck” generally, any
where. The smaller luxuries such as straw
berries, re-*-pberrie*, eic., axe equally fine.
The spec" allotted to this department, was
hy no means croaded, at.d from the excel
lence of the sp cimens it is lobe regretted
that there were not more exhibitor*. Pass
ing on to the department specially super-
inteudtd by the ladies, we find the usual
rtmeui of preserves, jellies, pickles, etc .
all gotten up and arranged
i exquisite taste, making a
uuat tempting display. Among
lh*ae. tbe now celebrated Mayhaw jelly,
■as pr« rolnenL This api*arertly worthless
fruit (the msy haw) wild ail over this
section of ountry. a..d vie believe tie
manufacture of tLis jelly from it, will in a
few years rival that of the gu.va, in Cuba.
If it has any other uses in tiro world no one
has ever been able to find them out. The
display of goods ard wares by the mer
chants of Alljany, in the spacious upper
story of the maiu building was very credi
table. Much judgment, and even artistic
skill, was displayed in their arrauge
ment. and the whole presented a
pleasing spectacle. Nearly all
tbe prominent firms in Albany, we believe,
were exhibitors in this department. In
two prom:uent department*, the Albany
•air is d ficient, viz: in live stock and
machinery. Probably the most interesting
exhibit in the cotton line, was W. O
Watron's underfeed cotton gin, which at
tracted much attention, and is undoubtedly
a great improvement on all former gins in
use. in rapidity and completeness of action.
U. If. Cross, of Fort Valley, exhioiteia
combination plow or cultivator, of his own
contrivance, which was something remark
able in i»s way. A guano distributor—
exiled “West’s distributor”—was also ou
exhibition ; a most ingenious and rcinom-
ical machine, and destined to come into gen
eral use. These were the most important
contrivai ces in tbe labor saving depart
ment, we notice, ami I mention them, as
they appear to be peculiarly adapted to this
section, though there were various other
invention* and improvements ou the
ground.'', all more or less ingenious, and
most of them like the above, of native,
home made manufacture and invention. We
are of c torse coiupel.ed to omit much in
this hasty t.ote on the fair, we would
g’adiy mention, but fear to trespass on your
space. Among its visitors are Hon J. W.
ltenfroe. state treasur. r. and J. S. Hender
son, Commissioner of agriculture, and
represen alive* of several of the prominent
I tapers of the state. Of the racing, the
feature that probably possessed the main
attraction for the largest number on the
grounds to-day, 1 am unable to speak, for
want of a sufficient amount of horse seme
and appreciation. Professionals, however,
say tt win good and quite un to the stand
ard. Taken altogether, ar.d making due
allowances for the drawbacks the manage
mer.t have had to coutend with this season,
the fair is a most creditable one. The ar
raiigeuieius were good, the grounds in ex
cellent order, and the weather unusually
fine.

Chattanooga, May 25.—Colonel E. W.
Cole, 1 ite president of the Nashville, Chat
tanooga and St. Louis railroad will in a
few days ake charge as general manager
of the Memphis and Charleston, and East
Tenncs-ee, Virginia and Georgia railroads
with headquarters at Chattanooga.
Chattanooga Time*, iV.ih.
We learned yesterday from reliable and
authentic railroad sources, that Colonel E.
W. Cole, late president of the Nashville,
Chattanooga and SL Liuis railway, will, in
a few days, take charge of a consolidated
line of road, consisting of the Memphis and
Charkston railroad, and the Fist Tennes
see, Virginia and Georgia railroad, and all
branches and leased lines belonging tc
them.
The headquarters of tbe managers and
the head offices will be moved to this city.
The headquarters of the East Tennessee,
Virginia and Georgia railroad are at present
at Knoxville, and the headquarters of the
Memphis and Charleston at Memphis. Un
der the i ew management th«se offices will
be cor.rordated and moved here.
Surveys will at once be made for the ex'
tension of tbe Memphis and Charleston
railroad from Stevenson. Alabama, to this
city via the Cincinnati Southern bridge, six
miles above this point, thus placing the
Memphis road in an indt jiendent porition,
it being at present in »ne power of the
Louisville and Nashville management,
using for»y miles of their track from Steven
son to Chattanooga. Thu road will lie about
thirty-eight miles in length, und will place
Memphis five mile* nearer Atlanta than via
the Nashville an 1 < ’ lattouongo. It will run
through a very fertiie country; the grades
are comparatively easy, no bridges ore to
be built, nnd with tbe exception of one or
two tunnels, the entire road can be built
without anv difficult engineering.
A road will also at once be surveyed from
Red C»ay, Georgia, on the Dalton arm of the
East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia rail-
ro.td to O iltewali on the Chattanooga arm.
This road will give Chattanooga a second
connec ion with Dalton, only one mile
longer than the Western and Atlantic con
nection The Es*t Tennessee, Virginia and
G -urgia railroad own the Selrua, Rome and
Dalton railroad from Dalton to 14 one, and
that inteiest will he c stiff bidder for the
b dance of that line when tbe judicial sale
of it coitus off on June 15.
We have, besides, positive and direct in
formation that the Knoxville and Ohio
railroad will be extended from Clinton—
about forty miles from Knoxville—to con
nect with th« Cincinnati Southern at Emo
ry Gap, and that work on the extension will
begin at an early day. The surveys have
already been made. The management of
tlxe Ea-t Tennessee. Virginia ai.d Georgia
railroad also controls this road.
These irujM>r ant movements will entirely
revolutionise the railioad situation in the
loath. The extension of the Memphis A
Charleston railroad will let freights from the
Mississippi valley |«iss through the valley of
Tennessee wi bout breaking bulk or paving
hills to road* c minified by I*oui»vilIe. This
connection wiil prove a great leverage for
tbe Cincinnati Southern.

Dr. H. H. Cary, of L\Grange, who is now
supervisor of fisheries for this state, then
bad great difficulty in getting the legisla
ture to pass a bill to encourage aucli an easy
production of wealth, and squeezed out an
appropriation of $500 only, after the most
arduous labor. During the past five years
the c '-ngressmea from Georgia have taken
great interest in thif matter and have sent
3 l *. me 10 tim e quantities
oi shad to be placid in tbe river* ia this
state. The friends of the movement at
home and some of the newspapers have
worked up a popular sentiment on this sub
ject and now there is a demand for plenty
of shad and a feeling that the proper stock
ing of our rivers would be worth millious
of dollars to the people.
It is therefore with pleasure that The
CoMmunoN announces tbe largest arrival
of shtd known in Georgia. Monday
afternoon Mr. J. F. Ellis, assist-
by Mr. G. F. Davenport,
both of tbe United States fish commission,
reached Augusta with seventy-one big zinc
cans, in which were one million little shad
born last Friday.
They were half an inch long, and looked
likeahorse i»a : r with two huge eyes. These
fish were brought from the hatching estab
lishment at Washington. Usually no more
than two hundred thousand are carried out
at once, hut thi* time Mr. Eilis with five
men accomplished the greatest feat of the
kind known. He brought out 1,000,000 shad
and has successfully placed every one of
them in Georgia water*. The greatest care
has to be used iu transporting thise iish.
The temperature of the wuter must he
watched sll the time. It is apt to get too
high. In Augusta Mr. Ellis used one thou
sand pounds of ice cooling off the little
shad. He was furnished a special car iu
Washington, and the h>h with their attend
ants were brought through free by all the
railroads. The Georgia road was especially
courteous iu affording Mr. Ellis every
possible convenience. He was met by Dr.
Cary iu Augusta, and they came up the
road together. Stopping at the Oconee
river they deposited 300.000 of the fish in
their new home. Then the same quantity
were put in the Yellow river, which, with
the Alcovaand the New*, form* the Ocmul-
gte. Tae--remaining 40*3,000 were intended
for the F.int, but as they would have
to be carried to Monti zutua
and transportation to that point
would have'endangered them they were
nut into the Chattahoochee at Icevifie.
Within seven miles of us there are 400.000
little sha«l giving promise of millions upon
millions in a few years. The freh have to
be very carefully put in a* deep a place as
can be found. The slightest shock wifi kill
them at this tender stage of their career
One drop of water failing squarely on
one of these little shad will break his
back. Some idet can l>e formed of
the delicacy and difficulty of the ta.>k which
Mr. Ellis and Mr. Davenport have thus per
formed successfully.
Dr. Cary while in Augusta arranged for a
fish hatchery there which will turnout a
million young shad this year, an l from
which he hope* to get fifteen millions next
year. He is confident of the success of the
project, and if it does succeed, we can
have all our streams full of shad
in a few years without any
further help from Washington. Dr. Cary is
enthusiastic ou this subject. lit deeius it
one of the great questions for Georgia. His
active interest in it has promoted much of
the popularity of the plan. • lie says the
sl al already put *n the Georgia river* will
soon teturn to spawn, and with the million
just added make it certain that iu three or
four years we will have such a supply of
fitii as we never dreamed cf, and big shad
will sell in Atlanta for ten cents apiece.
The reporter asked Mr. Kilts whether he
believed slisd would do well in all the Geor
gia waters
‘Certainly,” raid he; ‘‘it was believed
fora long time that white shad would not
flourish in the waters flowing into the gulf.
No shad were found in such streams, but
scientific fish culture has proven that they
flourish there as well as any
where. They are now being caught
away up ’ the Mississippi and
the fish just put in the Chat tali jochea have
as good a chance as tha-e in the Oconee.”
‘‘How long doe* it take a shad to get his
growth?”
‘‘These lit vie fellows we have just put in
will go to the oceau or the gulf where they
will remain three yeais ami attain their
growth. 1 hey will then be fine suad of
about four pounds each. They will leave
the ocean ami gulf and come all the way
back to llie identical waters in which the;
were put when but live day* oid and rail
ning away up stream, will spawn all along
in favorable place?.
“Do they always get back to the waters i;
which they have been put?”
“They Uo just as surely os they live.”
“How many eggs docs a shad lay?”
“Weestim ne 10,000 eggs for ever/ pound
of fish. Therefore, a shad of four iHinnds
would have a prospective family of 72,000
children.”
“Has Georgia received her due share cf
attention from the fish commission at
Washington?”
“She certainly has. No other state ex
cept Maryland ha* had so many shad.
Georgia congressmen have been very active
and have secured the state’s full share of
fish. The recent million were the result of
an eff»rt on the part of Mr. Blount, of this
state.”
Mr. Ellisspokcof the success of the efforts
which the commission is making to stock
rivers all over the country with the be.-t

a few year* the |>cop!e of Georgia will be
bountifully supplied with au abundance of
the finest fidi. The million shad just put
in will in three years arrange for so many
more that it will require a new system of
enumeration to count them.
Messrs. Ellis and Davenport returned to
