—Mile Bernhardt closes her engagement
In New York next Saturday and will play
next week in Bustos. Thus far she has
essayed six different roles. In all but one,
tbe grand tragic character of Pbaedre, she
seems to have obtained an equivocal sue-
and a vt teran journalist, writing to a
death with the people on this fiontier, and
they arr*e in their might and followed
Victoria's trail by m*Kht and by day, work
ing ui der every disadvantare. But the de
termination never left the pursuers; they
would destroy bis band, and they did. A
few weeks a<o Colonel Joaquin Terrsxv,
.be oldest and best Indian fighter on the
frontier, was Riven command of an expedi
tion against Victorio, his force to be organ
ized from the rancheroa and peaceful In
dians of tbe Sierra Madre. Some three
weeks ago news came that tbe Indians had
appeared only thirty miles from the can
itai, and hsd stolen some stock
Tbe next news that we hsd wav that
Terrazas was after them in cloce pursuit
We must now follow him and his brave
little army of volunteers The Indians,
beingable to send out small bands of from
ten to fifteen, were able always to keep
supplied with fresh horses, while Colonel
Terrazas had to maintain his forces as best
be could. In the section of the state where
this campaign took place there is a great
scarcity of water, and it waa essential to
know every water hole, as also every
wrinkle in the mountain?. About the end
of two weeks of as close pursuit as circum
stances would permit. Colonel Terrazas
found that the Indians, after staying at a
water-hole until the runners announced
the approach of tho trailers, would fill up
the spring with dirt and stones. This, from
tbeoolonel’s long experience with them, led
him to believe that they wished to evade
porsuitif possible. A few days of this work
—weary marching day and night, then
hard work at clearing out these holes and
waitief
to drin! . w
foed—b« gin to tell on tbe men unused to
hardships from their infancy. At last the
provislui e gave out. Not a pound of coffee,
not a grain of sugar or mtal, was in the
ebrstsof the little band. Colonel Terrazas
called hiv men around him and stated tbe
case, explaining to them that they bad yet
before them days of hard marching and pre
ration, and ....
Would thty
rest, or would they turn back? To all those
who chose to return back be gave free aud
willing permission. Three only availed
themselves of tho chance to return home,
and the others, refilling their gourds and
canteens, and watering their worn horses,
again ret forward. For five days and nighta
they followed clore upon the fleeing horde,
with nothing to eat except the flesh of
their hones which were killed when abso
lutely needed, slopping only for water
when they could go no further, until, at
least, on the frith day, in the afternoon,
tbey saw upon tbe plain before them, not
more tban five miles off, the dust of the
fleeing band. A lia-ty council was held,
ai.<1 the quick laid plan was as soon exe
cuted. Tne complete knowledge of the
country possessed by Terrazas and his
scouts led him to -believe that the Indians
would try md make a certain water-hole
by evening rest and water, and be off again,
for they knew tbey were close upon them.
To bead them at this hole was the only
hope of the pursuers, and every effort of
the tired aud wearied band was now put
forth.
Sometimes leading and then driving
their almost dyirg horses, they
forced their way by a circuitous
march, and arrived at tbe spring just
at the moment that the Indians appeared.
They Ltd no time to refresh themselves, but
chargerl the Indians, who took to the small
mountains among the rocks for shelter.
Colonel Terrazas sent his chief, Juan Mata
Artif, with half the force around the moun
tain to cut off any retreat, and the Co
manche tcout Cruz took a few more and
scaled an adjoining cliff and did excellent
work with unerring aim. A11 that evening
and all right the fight lastid; the Indians,
securely screened behind the rocks, being
hard to dislodge. Burii *
Indians built two bright
allowed to burn but a short time when the
were extinguished. Terrazas knew thel.
meaning, and sent word around the line to
keep a .sharp lookout. The order was
scarcely given when a volley a^dayell told
of the enemy in tbe rear. Encouraged by
tkese demonstrations tbe Indians on
the hill epeued the battle anew and
