Notwithstanding the numerous cases r
ported of colored children being burned to
death in consequence of being left alone in
a room where there is a fire, it seems that
greater prudence or care is exercised.
We have now to chronicle tbe horrible
death of a little colored ch'ld three years
old named William Smith, due to this cause.
On Friday afternoon Pbebto Solomons, col
ored, living on the Louisville road, about
four utiles from tbe city, left tne child in
the house for a few minutes. She states
that there was a slight coal fire in tbe
room at the time, but she apprehended
no danger. A short distance from
the bouse she met Hannah Johnson,
colored, and stopped to talk to her. While
they were speaking Hannah, who was facing
the house, remarked to Fhebia that she
must nave left a big fire in the house, as
she noticed a large volume of smoke issuing
from the window. Hannah battened to tbe
(use, and upon entering it was horrified
to find the child lying on tbe floor with all
bis clothes burnt off, literally roasted to
death. She called out to Phebia that the
child was dead. Iuformsiioir was sent
