A Family Game Played on the Great Ac-
tor for Fifty Thousand Dollars.
New York. October 15.???A dramatic paper pub-
]tubed to-day an account of the separation of Edwin
Booth from liis wife. The formal parting took
place last Friday, and that night Mr. Booth did not
finish his performance of Othello, Samuel Pierey
taking his place in the cast. The friends of Mr
Booth say the cause of his illness was an overdose
of morphine. Others declare* that it was too much
liquor. The story, ns told In the Dramatic Times,
is an follows:
on Monday of this week Mr Edwin Booth went to
reside at the Brunswick, on Fifth avenue, with his
daughter Kdvrina, leaving the Windsor, where he
has been residing ever since his return to this coun
try. At tlic snme time Mrs Edwin Booth left the
Windsor, with her mother. Mrs J H McYickcr, and
her stepfather, Mr MeVieker, to live with them at
the bouse they have rented on Fifty-third street,
near sixth avenue. It is the house owned by Mr
Henry C.Tnrrctt. Some of those who see Mrs Booth
most frequently sny that she cannot possibly sur
vive her illness. Yet others, who jpenv her well,
say that she Is much better and will live, and that
the reports of her dying condition are printed for a
purpose. They point to the fact that on several
occasions lately she has been out driving in the
park.
Mr Edwin Booth is almost heart-broken over this
sedaration, which has been brought about by other
people, who seem to have an interest in fomenting
trouble between man and wife. Mr Booth has al
ways been a most devoted husband. They were
pointed to as tlic model of what marriage should
Ih*. Mr Booth himself lias had two idols for the
past few years???his wife and his daughter. Mrs
Booth's love for her husband has been touching
and sincere.
Estrangement began about a year ago or more,
and in tli.it unaccountable way for which there
seems to be no explanation. A coldness sprang up,
which was added tobysoidl tant friends. Mr Booth
during all this time was affected beyond descrip
tion. He is of ft highly sensitive, nervous organi
zation, and what he endeavored to avoid only
seemed to come in with double force. In the midst
of it the quo-1ion of a will came tondd full llnmc
to what was only a smoldering tire. It seems that
ycors ago Mr. Booth had deeded to his wife proper
ty in Chicago. During the beginning of her illness
site made a will leaving this property to her mother.
\Ve do not cure to go into details of what was. and
still is, purely a family matter. Mr Booth thought,
and still thinks, he is right, anil his love and devo
tion to his wife beam witness in his favor. Mrs
Booth,on the other hand, and probably with the ob
stinacy that often accompanies serious illness.consid-
cred that she was acting for the best. Nothing like
a dispute ever occurred between them. Hr Booth,
ever watchful, ever tender, never so much nsallud-
cd to what he considered a wrong.
Thev came hack to this country and went again to
the Windsor hotel. Here Mr. Booth continued to
reside. Mr. Booth and his daughter had one suitof
apartments, and Mr. and Mrs. MeVieker and Mrs.
Booth another. Mr. Booth saw his wife constantly,
but Iter snffotingsnaturally precluded him front the
attendance which naturally was the province of a
woman, and, best of all, a mother, one day they
had some conversation, and Mrs. Booth told herhus-
liatid to leave her. He said he would, but lie always
near at hand, and, when railed for, would come,
since that lime, some two weeks ago, they have not
spoken.
List week Mr Booth determined to go to the
Brunswick, where lie would la- mar his theater.
He could not, under the circumstances, go to the
house of his father-in-law, to whom he barely
spoke. The w ife decided to go with her parents.
Thus, fora time at least, they are apart.

A Itrmarkcblr Story ofttir Superstition ofthc Negroes.
Columbia Register.
One of the most riinnikablc cases in criminal an
nals was tried at the court of general sessions of
Sumter county, on last Wednesday. It was the case
of the State vs. Johnston for the murder of John
Davis on the tilth day of lust February. Both the
prisinner and bis vielim were negroes, and the
trial developed the system of voudooism, or fell-
ehistn, to wlileh their rm-u Is still adieted in the
southern states. The prisoncr.la-forc his trial, made
rile following confession, wlileh was put in evi
dence: lie stated that he was in love with the
wife of the del-cased, it woman near twenty-five
veurs of age, the prisoner being about forty:
that she repelled his advances, and lie
sought the aid of a conjurer, one Orange Isaacs, an
aged negro. The so-called conjurer gave him a
charm, known in the language of negro witchcraft
nsa "hand,??? composed of various articles, viz.,
beeswax, foxe???s hair, a little sand from the shoe of
tlic person intended to be acted on, and a drake
foot, all sewed up in a small cotton bug. He was
told to wear it next to his skin over his henrt. for
one week, and the woman would love him. He did
so. and at the end of a week ro|>orted to the conju
rer that the woman had confessed her love for him,
but had refused to accept him as her paramour un
less her husband separated from her. The conjurer
then gave Johnston another chnim designed to ali
enate the husband from the wife. It was worn the
prescribed time.bnt he rt-ported that the woman and
tier husband continued tolivc happily together, and
that tlic charm would not work. The conjurer re
plied that Davis must l>e possessed by a devil, and
that he would give Johnston a charmed bullet,
which he must put in his gun and tie nt Davis's
head as he passed from the wood in which lie was
working towards his home at sundown the next
evening. Johnston objected that if he killed the
man the law would hang him if he were found out.
HL- h ???nrs on this head w ere allayed by the conjurer
giving him another charin', which he slid would
be proof against the law, and ihat no judge or jury
could convict him wbil- he wore it upon his
person Thus fortified. Johnston shot Davis through
the head on the following evening, killing him in
stantly, and covered his body with leaves in the
wood near the spot where he fell. He then pro
ceeded to the house of the deqensed, and was re.
reived ami welcomed by the widow, and domiciled
himself in the place of the dead man. The broth
er of the deceased, suspecting from hi?? absence
that he lmd been the victim of foul play ami
finding Johnston in possession of his house, had
him arrested on suspicion of murder. The body
was found covered up as described on the fourth
day after the killing. The prisoner confessed the
deed as stated, ami was placed on trial before Judge
Mackey, at Sumter, on Wednesday last. The trial
drew an Immense throng of negroes to the cottrt
house, where faith in the power of the conjurer
satisfied them that the prisoner could not be con
victed. His faith was strengthened by the fact that
Wo of the jurors cinjinnclled in the case, one a ne
gro and the other a white man. were taken sudden
ly ill. ami two others had to be substituted in tlieir
places. The jury, as finally organized, consisted of
nine whites and three blacks. The prisoner
was ably defended by Messrs. Barron A
Beard, and the trial occupied the en
tire day. The jury wen- out but ten minutes
ami returned w ith a verdict of guilty. Tito verdict
was received with exclamations of surprise from
many of the negroes present. Judge Mackey, who
is not sensitive to charms of the class described, at
once proceeded to sentence the prisoner. In re
sponse to the qt cstion from the judge, whether he
had anything to say why sentence of death should
not la- passed upon him, the prisoner replied that
he had had n fair ami imiNtriial trial, hut there were

the argumentum ad homiucm, ???How would
you like, your honor, if you were in my place, to he
hung in a hurry?" Judge Mackey, appreciating the
force of this argument, sentenced him to be hanged
on Friday, tlic twenty-fifth day of November next.
The negro faith in their system of fetlebism, or the
power of charms, lias been strengthened by the fact
that the sheriff of the county, a robust man in the
prime of life, dn>pj>ed dead within three hours

the prisoner that when informed of this death he
