Caktekmti lle, October 25.??? Iaist night
about 12 o???clock and just before Coup's circus
left for Home, a serious shooting affray he
tween some of the circus men on one side,
ami some of the deputy marshals and others
on the other, occurred. A negro, named
Henry Clark, was shot in the head and in
stantly killed. Others, of both sides were
badly beaten and bruised. Two of the circus
men, 1 learn, were shot. I have not been
able to learn just liow the ditliculty began,
but wisky is supposed to have been at the
bottom. It has not yet been ascertained what
particular person or {icrsons did the shooting.
The testimony taken before the jury of in
quest failed to show who killed the negro.
1 he unfortunate occurrence is greatly de
plored and condemned by all gdod citizens.
A negro woman, named Susan Dur
ham, was found dead in her bed this
morning. Cause of death unknown. Con
siderable excitement prevailed on the streets
this morning, and it was soon ascertained that
a Hon and a bear were at large in the city, and
??? that the lion w as pursuing the bear. The hear
was overtaken by the lion near the residence
of Mr. T. W. Milner anti killed. The lion is
still at large anti as I am informed is now in
the city.. It is not believed that he will attack
any tine if unmolested, ami therefore no con
siderable excitement prevails. Mr. James
Douthit, one of our oldest and best citizens,
???bed yesterday. Mr. John Calvin, of Cincin
nati, Ohio, died this morning after a short
illness. He came to Cartcrsville about two
months ago, his pur]??osc being to en
gage in the iron and mining bus
iness. Mr. Calvin, during his short stay
in Cartcrsville, made many friends, who
deeply regret his death. His remains will he
sent to Cincinnati. Iiev. V. II. Brewster,
of Alabama, hut formerly of this city, is here
on his way to his old home, in Cherokee
county, near Canton.
Crawpordvi i.i.b, October 22.???The excite
ment in regard to the arrest of Aleck Stevens
and Jeff Adams still continues. Opinion is
more freely expressed than ever before. The
main point seems to lie that the removal of
the prisoners to Warrenton was unjustifiable.
The Democrat of this morning says: ??????What
ever may he the proofs against these parties
the citizens of this county are indignant at
the course pursued. Why they should be
taken to another county and there incareer
ated, no one knows. There may be a reason,
hut they are unable to see it. We certainly
can see none. The best lawyers in the place
denounce it as an outrage, and say that they
do not understand what law it is that permits
a man to he snatched up and carried to a
county beyond the jurisdiction of the offence
charged upon him. We are strictly impartial
in the matter. Wc wish tosec the law carried
out to the letter, wherever it cuts. I.et us
have the reason for this affair. What
is it? Judge Pottle will Ik; here to-day
and he may he able to explain it.???
Some of the b'est informed lawyersof our town
say that the affair will not he settled at once,
ml that the prisoners, under the circum-
ances, are entitled to a redress in more
Ssos tli-in one. They express these ideas
liply as a point of law. It is the same
jineiple that caused the United States cir-
jit courts to establish commissioners through-
t different seetions-and the people charged
???til illicit distilling, should have a hearing
lions their own people instead of being ear
/ed three and four hundred miles to the
bode of strange and prejudiced men. How
the affair will t*e finally settled no one knows.
A trial, according to James T. ltcid, will lie
held in Warrenton on Wednesday next. It
has been stated that the young man, Aleck
Stevens is a nephew of the great commoner
lion.A.H. Stevens. This isuntnie.llc belongs
to another family entirely. He is a very respect
able young man, and public sympathy seems
to How in his favor. The opinion of the law
yers arc jus well based on this ground, that it
is a great and unnecessary expense to the
country. That these people could he tried as
well here as in Warrenton and the cost of
conveying witnesses to the county of Warren
must necessarily fall on the people. Some
arc in favor of tearing down the jail and
court-house, since, they say, it seems to
amount to uaught.
Eufaitla, October 24.???Much excitement
was created this n omine by the circulation
of the information tli..t H. C. Jordan and tour
negroes were arrested last night and jailed for
burglarizing W. <???. Uccscs store. For several
weeks Itcese has been losing goods in an un
accountable way, and finally his suspicions
were directed to Jordan, who was one of his
clerks. A watch was set and last night the
gang was caught It appears that Jordan had
keys to the store and entered and handed out
the goods to the negroes, and while this was
going on they were surprised and captured.
Jordan at once made a clean breast of the
whole business and so did the leading negro,
Joe Daniel. The other two negroes deny com
plication in the matter They are supposed
to have been the sentinels set
to give the alarm All are now in jail. Jor
dan. who is well connected, is trying to com-
promise out of the uilUir. He drinks unu in-
dulges in the opium habit and his friends
claim that he is not responsible for his nns-

It was well attended and raised $1,000 for mis

section master, was thrown from a fall car in
town a few days ago and had his log broken.

A rcjKirt reached the city this morning that
Mr. walker Batts, of Smiihrille, ex-ordinary
of Lee county, had shot his wife twice last
night, both halls taking effect in the head.
When the train passed Smithville the wound
ed lady was said to be barely alive. No further
particulars have been received as yet. .
Rome, Octolier 24.???Bishop Beckwith lec
tured at the Episcopal church last night on
temperance.??????The fifth week of the supe
rior court opened to-day. Judge Underwood
is determined to dispose of the busings* of the
court. Two weeks of the present term have
been devoted to the criminal docket and a
large numlier of cases were disposed of. So-
licitor-Gcneral J- I. Wright prosecutes with
great vigor and ability. -Mrs. S. E. Ax-
son. wife of Rev. S. E. Axson, is dangerously
ill. The grand jury last week recommend
ed that "there he no more license granted to
sell liquor in the county of Floyd.??? A
fashionable wedding will take place at the
Baptist church next Sunday. Several other
marriages are on the tapis.
An excursion party of fifty will leave Rome
for the exposition early in November. The
library fair will open on the 5th of December
and will continue one week. It will he held
in one of the most commodious halls in the
city, and will, without doubt, lie a great suc
cess. It is expected that a handsome sum
will he realized. John C. I???rintup, T. A. H.
Harris and Dr. J. A. Tigner, who attended
the Yorktown celebration, have returned to
the city. It is rumored that Captain John
J. Seay, one of Rome???s best business men, will
he a candidate for municipal honors at the
ensuing election. He will make a strong race.
Dallas, Octolier 24.???In Paulding, crops
are short, hut we have corn enough to go
through. Uncle Bill Arp has been with us
several days; he says we are all right. We
had quite an exciting time a few nights ago,
21st instant. An immense crowd gathered at
the Dallas academy to witness an exhibition,
or closing scenes .if the Dallas high school
The house was packed, and everything mov
ing on elegantly, when some student on the
stage turned over and broke a large glass
lamp. The flames rose and fire was cried
out, which created a fearful stampede.
All the avenues of outlet was hurriedly sent
for, children and teachers were run over,
knocked down promiscuously. Some jumped
from windows ten feet high. Little, bright,
blue-eyed Trndie Robertson, daughter of Dr.
S. Robertson, leaped from the stage seven or
eight feet out among the terrified audience,
making for a window, but was caught. The
flames were soon smothered out ami the busi
ness of the hour resumed. Miss Jane Foote,
teacher of the Dallas high school, has made a
grand success this year. She has made many
warm friends in Dallas. She will soon return
to her home in Opelika.
Athens, October 2f>.???Athens has presented
quite a lively appearance lately. College has
opened: the fall trade is in its zenith; king
cotton has taken the town, and to crown it all
the great Forenaugh circus will be here
Thursday, and iiaveriy???s ???Widow Bedott???
Friday. The Lucy Cobh chapel fund
only needs about two hundred dollars to com
plete the fifteen thousand dollars for its erec
tion.- Mr. E. T. Bishop, a member of the
class of ???7i>, died in the city last Thursday,
after a lingering illness, contracted by hard
study. While at Princeton it is said that he
would invariably study eighteen out of twen
ty-four hours. The Northeastern extension
will have been completed to Clarksville by
January 1, and to Tallulah falls by July 1.
So promise the directors. The Commercial
hotel, by the Messrs. Williams, has recently
opened, anti is certainly an ornament to the
city. It presents every comfort and require
ment of a metropolitan hotel. It is under the
personal management of Mr. Lloyd Williams,
which alone isa guarantee of its suceess.
LaGraxge, October 25.???The fair of the
Western Georgia fair association will begin
on next Thursday and continue three days.
A large display of agricultural products is
promised. Dr. II. II. Cary, the president of
the society, was in Atlanta yesterday, and
made arrangements to carry all of the exhibits
of this fair to the exposition next week.
Troup county is making every exertion for a
creditable display of her resources. The
circus arrived at LaGrange Saturday morning.
So did five or six thousand people to see it.
The show wagons broke down the bridges and
couldn???t parade. They couldn???t find level
land enough to put up their tents, so put up a
part only and reduced the admittance; had a
jooti show in the afternoon; at dark folded up
their tents, much to the disappointment of
those who wanted to attend the evening???s
performance. The chalybeate spring lately
discovered on Dr. Cary???s farm is beginning to
attract much attention on account of its valu
able healing properties.
Aliuxy, October 23.???A dispatch received
here from Bainbridge last Friday stated that
Judge Fleming had adjourned the regular
fall term of Worth superior court, which
opens to-morrow, but to what time we could
not learn. Wc were also unable to learn any
thing of the judge???s condition, and fear it may
be serious. The adjourned term of Dougherty
superior court is set for to-morrow week, the
5th Monday, which every one trusts lie may
be able to hold. We hear that a white man
named William Allen killed a colored man
named Solomon with a knife on Mr. Sam
Magby???s place in Terrell, just over the Dough

particulars. No rain in this section yet,but
warm weather has returned.

weather greatly contributes to the maturity
and opening of the top crop of cotton, of
which there is not such an abundance as last
year. Our community lias been visited

Washington, October 25.???Major John,W. Daniel,
the democratic candidate for governor of Virginia,
was here yesterday and left this morning lor Orange
court house, where he was to speak. Major Daniel
is quite as confident of his election as Colonel Cam
eron is of his, so one of the two will wake up the
morning after the election very much disappointed.
General Wickham, who was here a day or two ago.
said Daniel would be elected by over 20,000 major
ity. In the meantime the patronage of the general
government, and more particularly that of the post-
office department, continues to he given in aid .of
the read j asters. To-day the name of a readjuster
was sent in for postmaster at Lynchburg in place of
the present incumbent, a wounded federal soldier.
This is not very encouraging for Virginia republi
