case of tlie .State vs. James A. and John
Jones, charged with arson. These gentlemen urc
tiic persons whose arrest for arson and discharge by
the examining magi-trates caused such a sensation
a few days before court, tn this town. Both are
P rominent mere-hunts and do a large business.
ere-y D. Campbell, of Iiaiiibridge, was by Judge
Warren appointed court reporter. John F.
Thompson, of Arlington, was admitted to the bar
after a very creditable exainiuutiou in open court.
Ellaville, December 3.???Schley superior court
adjourned to-day. The most important case tried
Wits that of the statu vs. Sam Tison, colored, ehaigvd
with the murder of Emanuel Wimbush, a young
colored man ubout eighteen years old. The killing
look place in November, 18.su. upon the plantation
of 11 H. Singletary in Schley county. Tlson???s
daughter, a young woman, had struck Wimbush'.*
sister, a girl eleven or twelve years of age. and
Wimbush had resented it by siriking her assailant
witli his list and a piece of fence rail, fisi i
daughter complained lo him of the injury re
ceived, and he went down to where Wimbush lived
to punish him. The two men met at the fence in
front of the house, Wimbush armed nil',
an ax and Tison with his pra-k
et knife. Wimbush made a blow with the ax
which struck the fence. There was a difference of
opinion among the witnesses as to whether he
struck at Tison or not Ti-on caught the ax.
wrenched it from his opponent's grasp and threw ii
behind him, and then grasping the youth with his
left hand commenced cutting Idin with the knife
in his right hand. Wimbush sniggered und fell be
neatli tlie deadly blows, and then Tison, beut upon
completing his horrible work, jumped over the
fence and stabbed the prostrate man again. \Vim-
busli expired in a few moments???his body being
horribly cut in several places. Tlie trial attracted a
great deal of attention???the court house being
crowded with people. The defendant was ably de
fended by Fort A Simmons, and tlie slate was well
represented by Colonel C. B. Hudson. The jury
found the prisoner guilty ami recommended that
he be imprisoned in the penitentiary for life.
Et,aEKToN,nCieUiber9.???Yesterday about lo'clock
in tlie afternoon a loud noise was heard here, and
in a few minutes a messenger arrived with the in
formation that the boiler at the gin house and saw
mill of Mr. William H. Joi.2*, si;u;"c'\ about aPI
mile east of this place, had J-IQMC .??? i, killing a lit
tle son of Hr- Jones. Drs. a. C. and D. A. Mathews,
accompanied by a number of citizens, hastened to
the start. Arriving there, a horrible scene met their
view. Little Clifford, a bright and beautiful boy
about eight years old, second son cf Mr. Jones, was
standing somewhere near the furnace when the ex
plosion occurred. It seems tiiat one of the iron
doom of the furnace struck liis neck and cut his
head snnroth oil at iris shoulders. His body was
blown about fifteen feet from where he was stand
ing and his head about forty yards farther. An
other little son of Mr. Jones escaped death it seems
almost miraculously. He was standing nearer tlie
engine Ilian tlie one that was killed. He received
an Ugly cut on tlie bead, which at first ivos thought
to be fatal, but Was afterward found to be only a
llesh wound. Harvey Morrism, Colored, who was
running the engine at the time, hail one arm aud
both legs Icrribiy mangled, besides being badly
scalded. There art- no hopes of liis recovery. Al
fred Jones, colored, had some of ids ribs broken,
and was otherwise injured. Mr. J. E. Campbell had
little son slightly injured, and a mule ruined,
ho boiler was blown some eighty or a hundred
yards, and everything around it was blown clear
away. The explosion was supposed to have been
caused from allowing the water to get too low in
the boiler. Mr. Jones was absent at the time of the
accident. He is a worthy and enterprising citizen,
ami he and his wife have the sympathies of tlie en
tire community in their sad bereavement. Since
writing the above the negro Harvey Morrison lias
died.
Covington, December9.???Captain Boyd???s accom
modation train will commence running to Coving

will depend upon the patronage it receives after
that time. We arc delighted to have the train back

couragement to keep it on permanently. Consid
erable sickness has prevailed in owreivy for the past
two months, but the sick are now improving.
Several of the new stores in the burnt district will
soon lie ready for occupancy. They present a very
handsome appearance. Uncle Jim Anderson, of
the Covington Star, lias purchased the Murrell cor

two-story brick building on it next spriug with a
nice little opera house in the second story. Col
onel A. 8 Hough, of Oxford, has purchased tlie
lot occupied by Judge, F
a law office. Beal estate is Foil quite a bourn in
our city, at good prices. A grand "society event???
is on the tapis, and Covington is on qni vivo for the
marriage bells. A little son of Mr. Joe Brown, of
Social Circle, il is reqiortcd here, was accidentally
shot und killed on yesterday. Our merchants
gave an entertainment on last evening
hall, which was largely attended by all ages. The
charades, dialogues, speeches and other exercises
gave delight and general satisfaction to all who
were In attendance. The dam across the Chesta

water on to the celebrated Calhoun gold mine.
