From Bradstroct’*. July 8.
From Georgia we have 139 replies, repre
senting 97 counties, or 85 per cent of the cot
ton area of the state. The crop in Georgia is
h!unit twenty days behind the progress of the
plant ut the same date last year. Eighty-
nine correspondents in Georgia report the
weather since May 20 as good. 29 say fair, and
20 poor; 12 correspondents say that the
weather was better than for the same period
last year, 03 report more.rain, while 52 say
that the weather has been colder than last
year at the same time. The general tenor
of the replies is that the weather continued
unfavorable in Georgia for the growing plant
until nbout June 10, since wbi h
date it has been generally favorable.
Thirty-two correspondents report the
stand of cotton in Georgia good, 82 say fair,
22 poor, and only 3 report a had stand. We
conclude front this that the stand in Georgia
is fair. As regards the condition of iheplant.
but 13 (orrcs|M>ndents report it very good, 49
say g»x>d, 70 lair, and 7 jioor. From this the
general condition of the plant in Georgia may
be regarded as from fair to good. Twenty-
seven correspondents report a better condi
tion than last year, 27 worse, and 10the same,
while the plant is reported small, though vig
orous. The advices from Georgia now under
consideration abundantly susluin our previ
ous calculation of a fulling otr of.032 per
cent.
T1IB LOCAL REPORTS.
Am Kind’s, Jnly 7.—Weather most favor-
uble for several seasons. The plant has been
growing and fruiting perfectly since June
28, and its present condition is ns good as
can lie—better than since the -war.
Athens, July 7. — 1 The warm weather has
developed a rapid growth since last report.
The plant now needs rain. In some loculi
tics for the past few nights it lias been rather
cool. The plant is still small compared with
same date last year.
Atlanta, July 7.—Fine rains have fallen
since June 28. Cotton is improving daily.
Plant is a little small, but lieulthy, and in
fine growing condition. The outlook is en
couraging.
Achchta, July 7.—Weather satisfactory and
progress good. Present condition of the plant
is good, but it is about ten days behind ill
growth.
Caktkusvillk. July 7.—The weather was
favorable from June 28 to July 2. Since then
there has been much rain, and the tempera-
turc lias been cool. The plant is healthy, hut
two weeks later than last year.
CoLtiMitl’s. July 7.—The weather is too cool
at night. Progress of the plant is fair, though
it is small; condition good.
CrTiiuititT, July 7.—Weather is good, and
the cotton plant greatly improved since June
20.
Macon, July 7.—The plant is small on ac
count of grass caused by excessive rains.
The color is good, but fruiting progresses
jwiorly. Weather to-day and yesterday dry
ami cool.
Romk, July 7.—The weather is clear and
cool. Cotton is in excellent condition. Since
June 28 we have bad local rains and
weather.
Savannah,Jnly 7.—Frequent rains during
the past two weeks have caused the plant to
grow vigorously. If the wet weather con
tinues it will lessen the blooms through ex
cess of weeds.
SWEET POTATOES.
Rome Facia and Figure. on the 8ub|eet-Au Interview
with Colonel Newman.
Yesterday a Constitution reporter met Mr
Joseph M. Brown, general freight agent of
\lho Western and Atlantic railroad, and said:
"Mr. Brown, I believe several lines, of
which yours is one, propose to haul sweet po
tatoes as class “D.” Tell me something about
it,”
“Tlio rate," said Mr. Brown, “is for local
freight, and reduces the price nearly one-half.
Where, for instance, you have been accus
tomed to paying $100 you cun now ship for
$55, or in that proportion."
“Have you not arranged a through freight
rate?’ 1
“Not vet. We are in correspondence and I
think iti two weeks we will have rates made
to western cities that will be so exceedingly
low that people will be able to ship potatoes
with profit.”
"What gentlemen are interested with you
in the movement?”
"Mr E. H. Dorsey, of the Georgia road; S.
B. Dickens, of the South Carolina road; G. A.
Whitehead, of the Central railroad; James S.
Taylor, of the Savannah, Florida and West
ern; A. .1. Urine, of the West Point; E. P.
Wilson, of the Cincinnati Southern; George
R. Knot, ol' the Memphis, Chattanooga and
St Louis, and J. M. Cook, of the Louisville
and Nashville,”
"Will you not try to make a rate to the
* No, I suppose not- Potatoes for New "York
can go cheaper by steamer. In the great
northwest they pannol.be raised and are very
popular, so we propose to put ilie rate so low
that the potatoes will be in reach of the < west
erners.”
Ct>t ON EL K gW MAN SAYS SOMETHING.
A Constitution reporter talked to Colonel
J. S. Newman, of the department of agricul
ture, on the potato subject. He said:
"l suppose there arc about fourteen million
bushels of notutos raised in Georgia. Every
county in the state raises them, but of course
most of them are raised in the southern part
of the state. About one hundred and fifty
bushels per acre can be raised as an average.
Mv idea about the solution of the potato prob
lem is iliis. They should be evaporated and
then packed away. They could be shipped
to any part of the country at a slight expense
and would be in every way as good as when
tliev were first gathered. The United States
buys* evaporated apples and Irish potatoes for
the army and navy, and I don’t see why we
can’t dry sweet potatoes for the same pur-
jM.se. The people have never realized
what a boon evaj>orators are. They
will save vast amounts of fruit and
vegetables. A gentleman named l’ete. from
Ohio, is coming here next fall to set up an
evojx.rating establishment. He will evapo
rate okra, tomatoes, corn. etc. All these
things and more too can be evaporated and
made as good as aj.ples are. Take potatoes
for instance. A sweet potato is 85 per cent
water. Evaporate it and there is a loss in
weight of 85 pounds out of every hundred,
and that gives a margin for shipping long dis
tances. When the potato gets to Chicago i
can he put into water and very soon is tlselt
again. But to ship by freight as it now ts is a
dead loss. Mr. J. M. C. Reed shipped a large
crop of potatoes to St. Louis and lost not only
his jM.tatoes but $25 in cash by this specula-
ion.”
"Will it pay to evaporate them?
“Of ctont, evaporators will evaporate from
ten to a hundred bushels every day at a very
light expense.” , , ,,
"When will the crop be gathered, and how
large will it be?"
"The crop will be gathered in October and
November—as soon as the frost kills the
vines. The reports show a general average of
nine per cent, above the usual average—for
the condition at present—middle Georgia is
, twelve j>er cent* above an average; north
, Georgia is one per cent below; southwest
Georgia is twelve per cent above, and east
Georgia is thirteen per cent, above, and : ~
othcr sections fourteen. Potatoes form
great crop. When J. R. Sneed was editing
the Macon Telegraph, he said that a man
, should consider well before he left Georgia
or the west; that it was a bad idea to leave a
country that produced sweet potatoes and
| old field peas.”
new to us. A little curious to see our old
friend and knowing that bis fcajipy disposi
tion would help us to a frame of mind we de
sired, in order to stand the intense heat we
are now enduring, we went in and were most
cordially received.
“#5ood song that you were humming. Uncle

kinder spilt—hut she is u good old banjo, you
ninv bet your last niekle hit is. All yer got
to do is to give her a little sunshine and she is
nateral as ever.”
By this time old Andy had finished tuning,
and before commencing his song, remarked:
“I foun dis yer song down to Mr. Cicero
Smith’s spring. Some of dem white folks dat
S >es dar to rat de Brunswick stew muss-er
rapped hit, and Mass Cicero lowed I might
have hit, kase you know Mass Cicero and me
old-time frens. I wish day was more ob it.
Mass John, if ebher you meet Old Si, or your
Uncle Remus, ax dem if day can patch on a
stanzy or two, as de pars mi say.”
Here the old man threw out his tobacco and
sung the following song:
"Oh! Use up. Si, an shake yersef.
Be rabit foot get put’ top of de shef.
—Bur Remus! Remus!! wbar’s dat match;
tell you niggers dat Satan’s in de patch,
Old Satan’s in our goober patch,

"Brur Remus, you keep in de middle ob de rode,

Ah old Andy leaned to his work he looked
like he was not Sess than forty years.
Some Rural Philosophy.
From the Oconee County, Ga., Monitor.
Editor Monitor: When you see a white
man walk half way across the street and take
darkey by the hand with a friendly and
familiar grasp, ask earnestly about the health
of liis family, and, finally, still continuing
that so glad to niectyou, and leads this darkey
to his buggy and politely ask if he would not
like to take n short drive, you may know that
white fellow lias concluded to run Tor the
legislature, where lie may display his talent for
law-making. When you see lawyers calling uj>
whole town to take a drink, you may know
some poor darkey has been moving on Sun
day, and that lawyers cannot sit idly by and
see the 5th commandment violated 'without
treating. When you see a man lioneyfuggling
another whom you have reason to believe he
detests, you may know lie lias an ax to grind.
When you see a farmer in town so often that
you hardly ntiss hint from the streets, yon
may know he runs his crop on a long credit.
When you sec an editor fussing and fuming
about the people and hard times, you may.
know that he has missed his calling. When
you see a girl front far off come to Watkins-
illc, you limy know that the boys will look
cleaner during her stay unless perchance it is
too long.
Jailed Georgians.
From the Rome, Ua , Courier.
While our reporter was visiting the jail a
few days since, seeking an interview with one
of the inmates, he inquired of others what
have you done to cause you to be here? To
our inquiries we found out one was there for
murder, one for assault and battery, one for
forgery, one for larceny, two for carrying con
cealed "weepins*” one for gambling, one lu
natic and two others “for nothing.” The
jail isgetting comfortably filled. All the in
mates except two are’colored. The jail is
neat'y kept, and the prisoners speak in the
best terms of the jailer.
