THE WEEKLY ^ONSTITFTTOX- TUESDAY. OCTOBER 31. 1882,
AFTER TIURTY-Six YfcARS.
A True Stary ot Tri e Love'. Co«*U«rj-A Rtmari.-
abtjr Hteadfa.1 Man.
Mostreai-, October 25.—Thirty-six years
ago, aays the Montreal Star, there lived in
that pleasant little town, down the liver, call
ed Sorel (very little it was then) a youth and
a maiden. The name of the youth was George
Ilcaupre, the name of the maiden Mary Ann
l’carce. They belonged to families of mod
erate circumstances. He, with the strength
and devotion of honest young manhood,
loved the maiden and wooed her with
that earnestness which only such a
lover can. He was giv«n ev
ery encouragement, was, some say
actually accepted, was congratulating him,
self, at least, on the smooth coursing of true
love, when suddenly a rival ajqiearal, and
everything for him turned black. The rival
was one Jacob Savage, of the same town.
Whether he was richer than young Beaupre,
or better linking, or of more plausible address
or whatever advantage be baa, certain it was
that the young girl's favor turned toward
him, and her first lover was neglected and
then left in the cold. Pretty soon she and
Sav3gc were married and settled down in the
place, and then young Ueaunre’s hope died
out. He tried to work on as before, hut could
not; lie closed up his bnsincss, settled up his
affairs and starlet! to the far west toward
v.-h'ch so many adventurous spirits were
about that time shaping their course.
From that day to within a few weeks ago
he had not set fool in this part of Canada.
He had worked bard, saved carefully, pros
pered and laid up property worth at least
*200,000. He had never married. He was
getting up toward sixty years of age. Several
weeks ago he fo an idea to come back once
more to see hi- i . lends, and be started east
He searched out relatives in Sorel and Mon
treal, but found few that he remember
ed. He inquired of the woman who
as a girl had so many years before
thrown him overlioard for a rival. They
told him she was widowed, her husband
had been dead many years, she had been liv
ing several years in Montreal. This interested
him, he visited Montreal, went to call upon
her, met her, and then—. He found her get
ting old, in poor circumstances, with several
children, lint that made no difference; he saw
only the girl of thirty six years before. Let
the following extract from last Saturday's pa
per tell the story:
"Bbacpre—Savage— In this city, Saturday, Octo
ber 14, at the bishop's palace, by Ills Loruship-
fli-hop Kabre, George lteaupre, E-q., of black
Hills, Dakota Territory, ormerly of Sorel, to Mary
Aun 1’carcc, widow of the late Jacob Savage, of
fcorel."
The reading public glanced at this notice
and passed it over, knowing nothing of the
meaning bidden between its lines, nor would
they ever have known it had not friends of
the pair whispered the story about until it
caught the ear of one of the “great ubiqui
tous." One of its meanings is that the
wealthy bridegroom was not content with a
marriage by ordinary officials, but. he sought
(he highest church dignitary in this part of
the country to tie a knot the strings of which
had touched nearly forty years ago. Private
affairs should not be too far discussed; it is
sufficient to say that everything lie, with his
s happiness of herself
d Tlie pair are now
wealth, could do for the
or tier children that he did
in Quebec visiting relatives. In a short time
they will go west, back to his home near the
Black Hills.
fearful peril.
The Cab of an Kntlae Kinmlng Thirty-Five Mile*
Hour Takes Fire.
New York, October 25.—When the train on
the Pennsylvania railroad from Jersey City
this afternoon, comprising ten passenger
coaches, with fully 600 people aboard, run
ning thirty-five miles an hour, reached the
Bergen cut there suddenly came through the
port door of the smoking car, which was next
o l lie engine, a pulf of smoke. This was
followed bv a dense volume of smoke and a
tongue of flame. The passengers who were
seated sprang up in alarm, and those
.who stood near the front door
shrank back as the smoke and flame
increased. One man grasped the door and
slammed it shut. The next instant it was
dashed open again, anil two men threw them
selves into the cab. One of them wasSieg,
the engineer, and the other was the fireman.
Through the blinding smoke that poured di
rectly over the iron tender the passengers
could see that the cab of the engine was in
flames, while the open door of the engine fur
nace was a mass of fire. The smoking-car
passengers were filled with consternation.
Those nearest the rear door crowded out upon
the platform, only to meet another excited
crowd issuing from the front door of the
second _ car, the passengers of which had
by this time become alarmed by the
commotion and the illumination from
the blazing cab. The other passengers
raised windows and looked out, only to see
that the (rain was dashing along at a great
speed, and that it would be fatal to jump.
The engine was now without control, and
Engineer Sieg, looking back at liis engine, at
once realized that ujn>n him depended the
lives of GOO passengers. An effort was made
to stop the train by the cord connecting the
airbrake. This would not do. The engineer
then turned his face to the engine, and, set
ting his teetb together, lie sprang through the
door and aliinbed upon the tender. Then he
disappeared in the flames beyond. Some of the
pnssviigers began thinking of dropping outol'
the car windows into the Hcck-nsack river
when the train should reach
the bridge. Suddenly, however,
came to a halt. The passengers nearest the
engine now saw the head and shoulders of a
man appearing aliove the water-tank on the
tender. Several men sprang on the tender
and drew him out. It was Engineer Sieg. He
was weak and half unconscious The clothes
were completely burned from him, his face
was disfigured, and his hands were shocking
ly burned His body was blistered so badly
that some of the flesh was stripped off in
moving him. The fire is said to have been
caiiseU by flames from the open furnace door
communicating witn the woodwork of the
cab. Favored by the rush of wind, they
soon enveloped the cab in fire, forcing the
engineer ana his assistant from their posts.
A STUDENT'S SHOT.

Paris, Ky., October 25.—Prof. Yerkes. who
has charge of a private school here for boys
and young men, received a painful pistol shot
wound in the right arm this morning from
Homer Oldson. one ot the students, fourteen
years of age The professor had given the lad
a little shake by the collar yesterday for
tardiness in attendance and failure in studies
and requested that a written excuse be
handed in. The lad brought
excuse and as he handed it
the professor said: “Take this too." and fired
with a ."J calibre revolver. The bullet went
obliquely through the muscular part of the
arm, ana by a mere acc dent missed taking
effect on any of the children. After the dress
mg of the wound by the physician the p
lessor resumed his duties in school. The 1:

rently what to do with himself, surrendered
and is now in jail. The pistol used was
