THE WEEKLY CONSTITUTION, TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 15, 1882.
THE OLD 7TH.
THE SCORE OF A HOTTER FIGHT
THAN EVER.
friends of Clements, to such an extent that two o
the number went and voted for Clements. At
other points in the county the interest was equally
great, and the excitement was high.
How the Folks Voted tn Cncrckec -The Returns By
Precincts—THo Mountain Colt Increases His
Lend and H Ids tue Old Distrlo Fas to
Her Moorings—Alongtbe Railroad.
The defeat of Felton by Clements in the
7tli district two years ago was a genuine sur
prise, aa Ilr. Felton had carried the district
there by majorities ranging from 250 to 2,500.
As Clements majority was only 862, it was
thought Dr. Felton, by rallying his friends,
could beat the “mountain colt" out of his
small lead. This made the fight a bitter one,
and added to the interest it would otherwise
have had. It was felt that if Felton was
beat once more it put the district reliably
democratic and if he was elected, it made
him harder than ever to beat.
COBB COUNTY.
Marsotta, November 7.—I send you the full
vole of Cobb by precincts. The gainB for Clements
have been made with a whoop, and the wonder is
that the majority la not larger. Nothing has been
heard yet from The Constitution couriers in the
mountains, but am confident (hat they will be in
on time. N. P. T. F.

LaFayette, (via Rome)November 7.—I have just
received the last returns from the precincts of this
oounty, which I now forward by special courier
cigntcca miles to Trion Factory, where they will be
telephoned to Borne, and there telegraphed yon.
Special to The Constitution.
Lapavetee, Ga.. November?, via Trion Factory-
Walker oonnty gives Clements a majority of 401.
The election was unusually lively with voters, and
a large vote polled at evary precinct in the connty.
From the time the polls opened until the hour of
closing them there was a large crowd around each
voting place, in fact, business houses, workshops
and fields were all giving a day of rest, so great was
the interest of the people in the contest. At this
court house the place of voting was continually be-
scigcd by large crowds. Mr. Clements was present,
but only as a spectator. The vote was larger than
any that has been cast at this place. About noon,
a gentleman named Cilton, a strong Felton man, ap
peared at the court bouse door, followed by twenty-
seven men, all of them armed with Felton tickets.
They were greeted with groans and hisses by the
cincts at which no elections were held. I had mes

miles to-day in doing the work. The ride was never
made before under the circumstances, and Mr. Cox
is better than a “lightning express.” He'll do to
lead the Constitution ban a of couriers. I send
you the returns by precincts of this remote county.
W. S. G.
The contest between Candler and Speer in
the ninth district is unequalled in our annals
in bitterness and interest. It will be historic
in many points.
In the last election for representative in the
ninth Speer was opposed by Mr. Bell. There
were 21,512 votes cast, of which Speer had
4,062 majority, running as an independent.
Il the race before, he ran against Hon. J. A.
Billups, whom he beat 250 votes in a poll of
21,724.
He therefore entered this race with a pres
tige of two victories and a majority of 4,057
in his last race.
CLARKE COUNTY.
Special to the Constitution.
Athens, November 7—Election progressing with
great excitement but no disturbance. They are
crowding Speer badly in Clarke, and two hundred
and fifty is the highest he can get. All four the
county precincts will go for Candler. Bets are free
ly offered that Candler will have one thousand ma
jority and no takers. S. M Pruitt while driving to
the polls was thrown from his buggy and broke his
leg. Tinney Bucker, who was with him narrowly
escaped serious injury. F. H. Richardson.
Athens, Ga., November 7.—Our couriers from
Oconee and Madison have not yet arrived, but can
hardly be heard from until midnTght. Every mes
seneer from the precincts in this county is in, and
I send you the full vote. Speers' majority has been
reduced over S00 and the town is simply wild with
excitement. Dispatches are being read from the
hotel balcony and the streets are ringing with
cheers for Candler. There has beett no disturbance
to-day, but the most earnest hand-to-hand skuflle
ever seen at the polls, I will send you the news
from my other counties later.F. H. R.

A TERRIBLE FIRE.;
Poor Asylum la Nova Scotia Burns Nearly a linn
4red Persons Alive,
Halifax, N. S., November 7.—A fire broke out
at midnight in the eastern end of the provincial
poor asylum, an immense six-story structure, con
taining about 400 neoplc, and at 1:30 a. m. half the
building was in flames. The inmates rushed about
the building seemingly almost oat of their senses,
and the work of getting them out was very diffi
cult; thought most of those confined in the hos
pital had been saved, but it is feared a number of
lives were lost. It is thought that not less than fif
ty persons were burned to death.
Halifax, N. 8., November 7.—The fire which
consumed the poor asylum broke out about 12 o’clock
last night when all the inmates were sleeping in
the west wing. The old women and children were
aroused and it was found necessary to break open
the doors with axes to liberate them. Then it be
came known that those in the upper wards of the
wing were almost helpless. The firemen and other
early arrivals hastened up stairs and were soon get
ting the blind, old and lame down long winding
stairs These were all saved but the work was
slow and while men were thus engaged, the fire
reached the air shaft which ventilated the main
building, and in a moment reached the top story
That floor was used as the hospital.
.his story contained seventy helpless patients
Ladders were too short, and.after a fireman had been
knocked down by falling brick, it was seen that
even ladders would be swept away. In a few min
utes these attempts were stopped. The fire burst
through the roof, and far above the roar of tho
flames and crack of the bursting slates were heard
the cries of wretched patients in the hospital, who
were roasted to death. Most of these
were helpless, and could not leave
their beds, and perhaps th
were stifled by smoke before the flaiqes reachi
them, but others were seen to dash ! themselvu
against the windows and cling to the sashes til
their strength was exhausted, or their hands burn
ed off. and then they fell back into the flames. A
woman was seen to drag herself to a corner win
dow and, forcing her body half out till she could
breathe cool air without. She remained in that
position till her head was burned off. It is known
there were about seventy patients in the hos
pital. Only half a dozen wore carried out
before the flames cut off all further
approach to the place. A medical
man who is in a position to know, estimates; the
loss of life to be not lass than fifty, and these were
all patients in the hospital. Poor old people and
title children were huddled together in a barn
some little distance away and were there packed
around with straw and blankets to keep them com
fortable until morning.
Halifax, November 7.—So far as ascertained
thirty-one persons were burned to death in last
night’s fire—eight men and twenty-three women.™
Special to the Constitution.
Raleigh, November 7.—The large saw mill of
John Colvlile, at Abbottshurg, Bladen county, has
been totally destroyed by Are, with immense quan
tities of lumber. The loss is heavy and only par
tial insurance.
Pittsburg, November 7.—A Are this morning de
stroyed part of Oliver’s wire mill, and threw eight
hundred men out of employment. Insurance S80,-

KIND OF MULE HE WOULD BE.
Burdette.
No wonder the mule is a kicker. Were I a mule,
love, I. too, would kick. Every time I got a chance
I would lift somebody higher than a kite. Iknow
just exactly what kind of a mule I would be. A
bay mule. One of these sad-eyed old fellows that
lean back in the breeching and think. With striped
legs like a zebra. And a dark;brown streak down
my back and a paint-brush tail. And my mane
cut -hort and my foretop banged, and a bead as
long as a flour-barrel, and I’d be worth
two hundred and a hall in any market, and
I’d wear a flat harness and no blinders, and some
day when some man bitched me up to a dray and
piled on a ton and a half of pig-iron, a cord of
wood, six barrels of flour, a good load of household
goods and a steamboat boiler, I would start off
with it patiently and hanl it steadily until I got to
the top of the grade on the road around North Hill
and right about there and then a foiling maple-
leaf, fluttering down in a spark of gold and crim
son, would scare me all bfit to death, and the au
thorities would have to drag the Mississippi river
six weeks to find all of that load and some of that
driver, while In three minutes after the emeute I
would be tranquilly browsing on the grassv heights
that smile above the stiver flowing river.' This is
the kind of mule I would be.

HALL COUNTY.
Gainesville, Ga., November 7.—Some of the pre-
cints in thiscounty are 20 miles from the polls, and
it is just now that the full returns are in. The re
suit shows that Candler has a majority of nearly
1,000 la bis home county.
The day was auspicious, and when the polls were
opened 300 Candler men took charge of the grounds
and kept it all day. The Speer men retired in dis
gust. The negroes voted largely for Candler, but,
true to republicanism, most of them dropped their
ballots for “dear mars Emory.” Everything passed
off quietly. Not a drop of liquor was on the
ground. Hall wafts her one-eyed plow-boy to the
halls of congress, and sends greetings to true
democracy throughout the land. Below is the offi

FANNIN COUNTY.
A RIDE OF FORTY-THREE MILES AFTER DARK OYER
MOUNTAINS. ^
Jasper, Pickens Connty, November 7.—Mr. Mark
Cox, the Constitution special, left Morganton, 43
miles from here, at 6:30 o’clock to-night He reach
ed here at 11:20, having made the 43 miles in 4:50
minutes over a mountainous road in a pitch-dark
night. He had five relays of horses, and before he
left had collected the returns from the twelve pre
cincts in Fannin, with twelve couriers, who rode 250

another long ride.
Rabun Gap Junction, November?.—I hare just
come here on the special engine from Clarkesvillc.
I rode 21 miles from Clevclaud. bringing the re
turns of White. Reached ClarkesvUlo by midnight.
I found the special engine awaiting mo with the
returns from Rabun which had been brought to
Turnersvillo, eighteen miles from Olay ion, by Mr
McConnell. At 2:10 am Mr Will Haralson arrived
with tho returns of Union and Towns, having ridden
forty-four miles since 7 o'clock over tho worst road
in tho world.
He was to meet Mr. John Henderson at Nacoo-
chee at midnight, with the returns from Towns.
The ride from Hiawassee is 23 miles and leads
through Unicay gay, a terribly bad road. He lolled,
to make the trip in time and Mr. Will Harralson
after waiting as long as he could, rushed on and
saved the returns from Union By the failure of
the Town’s courier to reach Nachoochec In time,
the only precinct in this section was missed. Mr.
Will Harralson had all he could do to make his
own trip and could waste no time in waiting. His
ride is unprecedented, and scores of people sat up
in Clarksevillc to see If ho could possibly make it.
The most experienced mountaineers pronounced
it an impossible ride, hut he made it, and brought
he news to Sarah.
