Denver, Col., September 12.—The details
of a bloody affray, which occurred at the Mc
Lain ranche, in Elbert county, on Sunday
night, in which eight cowboya were engaged,
have just reached here. Sunday being a
off, they all went to Agate station, on
Kansas Pacific road, and falling in with their
companions, opened the feitivitives with sev'
eral drinks. Thence they went to a neigh
boring ranche, where they obtained a supply
of liquor and started for borne. On the way
two of their number, named Rossiter and
McKeever, engaged in an angry dispute on
trivial matter, and all repaired
the herders’ headquarters to settle the diffl-
culty. As soon ns they were inside
the men clinched, and both fell to the ground
fighting desperately, their companions urging
them on. The tables and benches were re
moved, and an improvised ring was made,
The men beat and tore at each other with the
ferocity of tigers. The on-lookers, in their
excitement, madly howled and danced about,
brandishing their revolvers and encouraging
their favorite in the fight. While the orgy was
at its highest the oil lamp was knocked from
Its place, and the room was in darkness. The
men, now completely mad, ran upon
each other, and in a minute after the
light had been extinguished the melee
was general. The door was locked, and there
being no means of egress, each man fough t
for himself. Amid the resounding blows and
curses a pistol shot rang out, and the death
of one victim paralyzed whatever of reason
was left in the party. Almost before the cry
had left the lips of the unfortunate man,
there was a wild fusilade, and for a moment,
by the fitful Hashes the gloom was lighted
Rossi ter was dead, two men named Jones

others were wounded, one at least fatally

CnAuifCEY, Ga., September 10.—Our once
quiet little village is getting to be the most
immoral town on the Macon and Brunswick
railroad. It is situated in the turpentine
belt, and therefore there are great many ne
groes here, and the most of them are imper
tinent and trifling Last night some of them
were about to get into a fight, when Mr. J. A
Mitchell, a quiet young man. passed an d re
marked that you should quit so much fight
ing, and one of the negroes, who was not con
nected with the row, asked him what did be
have to do with it. and at the same time
shooting him through the breast, an inch and
a half above the left nipple. Mr. M
walked oil a few steps and fell. He is yet
alive though Dr. Montgomery entertains very
little hop»*s of bis recovery. I have not learn

is a desperate character, having shot two ne-

Lewis Stewart, colored, killed John McGee,
colored, last Saturday night at Victoria mill,
in Wavne county, for the most trivial offense
possible, if we are correctly informed. Onr
information is that the? were havingn regular
negro breakdown-frolic—and in "passing
around,” as is the negro custom, for they all
dance at once, the two collided, which re
sulted In angry words, whereupon the irate
and infuriated Lewis brought his pocket artil
lery into position and commenced, in cold
blood ai it were, the deadly assault. He has
fled, but no doubt a small reward will bring
him “into court."
COTTISO AFFBAY.
From the ValdoMa Times. .....
In a difficulty last jiiturday night between
Ransom Drown and Ml Crawford, both col
ored, the latter received several seriotts
stabs from the Knife of the former. An ill
feeling has been existing for some time be
tween Brown and Crawford: they were not on
speaking terms. It seems that this enmity
arose from the too intimate relations of
Crawford with Brown’s wife. The irate bus-
band and tbe persistent lover
met unexpectedly last Satnrday
night. Several blows were passed
and in the melee Brown cut his antagonist
in two or three places. The wounds inflicted
on Crawford are very dangerous, and may
prove fatal. It was reported one day this
week that be was dead; Ibis, however, wai
found to be a mistake. From the last ac
counts Crawford was in a very critical condi
tion. and may die at any moment, though he
possibly may recover. In the meantime.
Brown is held in custody to await any fur
ther developments in the case.
SHOT IN THE DARK.
From the Savannah Tim- s , . . „
Shortly after eleven o'clock last night Po
liceman Maher was shot and seriouly wound
ed by an unknown negro in St. James square,
at the corner of Barnard and York streets.
Tbe particulars of the shooting are meagre,
but as near as could he learned the officer,
who was patrolling South Broad street, as he
crossed Barnard heard the cry of “police!”
coming from the direction of Broughton
street. He rushed down Barnard to York,
where he discovered a crowd of young white
men and a negro on the sidewalk in front of
the boarding house of Mrs. A. M.
Palin. There was some disturbance,
and as the officer approached
the negro he saw a pistol glistening in his
hand. He attempted to draw his own weapon
from his holster, and as lie did so tbe negro
fired, the bait taking effect in the officer's
arm, which was rendered useless. As soon as
he fired the negro fled. The officer succeeded
in drawing his revolver with bis left hand
and followed in close pursuit down York to
Whitaker street, out Whitaker to Sooth
Broad street, and up South Broad to Jefferson
street, where he was lost sight of and escaped
In the darkness be was unable to recognise
the negro who fired the shot, and would prob
ably be unable to identify him. There are
other means, however, of proving his iden
tity, and his arrest will probably be effected
to-day.

N*w Orleans, September 12.—City Treas
urer Walshe was restored to his office yester
day, in obedience to a mandamus issued by
Judge Lazarus, the police being withdrawn.
Lost night the city council passed resolutions
of impeachment against Waishe, charging
him with gross neglect of duty in refusing to
perform bis duties as treasurer, in refusing to
buy a certain warrant drawn by tho comp
troller In favor of the firemen's charitable as
sociation, under the ordinance 425, there
being money sufficient to pay said warrant.
This action suspends the treasurer from duty.
P. H. Harrison, chief clerk, has been named
as acting treasurer. Waishe is given thirty
days to answer before the final trial under
the impeachment resolutions.
