THB^PlTtVATB^hOl-DiKR TO IHB FRONT.
Let ut bear from the private soldier!
We have had the epics of battles and
sounded the glory of the great generals. Now
let us hear from the private soldier.
Let us hear the laugh that rang about the
camp-fire. the song that lloatcd out of the
mess tent, the shout that hung about the
charging squadrons, the sympathetic word
spoken os shoulder to shoulder, the ranks
pressed into the smoking battle, the joke
with which the horrors of battle were relieved
the heroic deed with which they were eno
bled, and the romance with which they were
iiluuieind.
Let us hear from the private soldier-
matter whether he wore the gray or the blue
— it is all one now, and brave men love to
read of brave men, whether they fought with
or against them.
Tl»en, private soldiers, take up tho pen!
Give hs briefly such war anecdotes as you re
member. Recount in direct words such deeds
of suffering or heroism as may come to you,
after the lapse of twenty years. There are
many old soldiers whoso pulses will heat
quicker at tho reading of them, and many
a soldier's son who will read with pride of the
dauntless deeds of that war in which his
father bore a part.
Let us hear from the privatosoldier.
General I.ee*N Nwortl.
"DID GRANT KKTURN LKK.'H SWOKII AT AITOMATTOX
COURT HOUSE?"
Poetry, art, ami romance have combined to
paint the "historic scene ’ of Lee tendering,
ami Grant magnanimously declining to re
ceive, his sword at Appomattox court house;
but nothing of the kind occurred.
We published in I87f> (in "Reminiscences,
Anecdotes, and Letters of General R. K. Lee")
General Lee's own account of the surrender,
in which he said, with emphasis, that as he
had determined from the beginning of
gotiationa that ollicers should retain t
side-arms, lie did uut violate the terms
tendering General Grant his own swoni
This, of course, settled the question, for the
world long since learned to receive implicitly
the lightest word of R. K. Lee.
lint it lias alao been recently set at rest by
the following correspondence which explains
itself:
Rui kai.o Litiiia Si'rinos, Viiioinia, March
Jl, 1881.—General 1?. ti. Grant, New York;
Sir,—In a friendly discussion between several
gentlemen of northern and southern procli
vities as to the "truth of history." a question
arose whether General Lee ut the surrender
actually tondered, and you received, his
sword.
It was mutually agreed that you should be
written to fora decision.
There is no idle curiosity or desire for noto
riety in regard to tins request, and a reply
from you would he highly appreciated.
Very respectfully,
T. D. JxmtKss.
General Grant replied as follows on tlie hot
tom of the Mime sheet of paper:
General lUdeuu's book, now in the hands
of the printer, will give tho exact truth of the
matter referred to in thin letter. There was
no demand nude for General Lee's sword
and no tender of it offered.
U. 8. Grant,
The Uni Ntiof.

A correspondent having given thin honor to
the battery then commanded by the gallant
Jklsjor JaiiiiM I), (’umming. of North l.'itrolina
he wrote at mice the following manly dis
claimer:
Niw York, April 5tli, 1881.—Editor Re
view:—In your issuo of .".1st illt. I uote
communication signed "Confederate," which
unjustly claims for my old battery the dis
tinguished honor of tiring the last shot in the
army of northern Virginia.
Your correspondent is mistaken. This
honor has nr'er been claimed by nivsr
any member of the battery as far as I k
and I think it an act of justice to correct any
•uch impression. While the old battery was
more than once named in "general orders"
and frequently complimented by General
Beauregard, Hoke, Pettigrew atul others, ami
myself what is due some other gallant com
ltundcr. Respectfully,
Jam. D. Cummiko.
Rut the following from our gnllaut friend,
Major Parker, seems to show that the houor
really belonged to "Johnson's Battery" of
Richmond;
The "last artillery shot" was not tired by a
n the yard of Mr. l r
bat
tilery
battery "stationed lr
but by a Richmond battery known
"Johnson's Battery," and once commanded
by the late Major Mariundtike Johnson, of
this city. On the occasion referred to tiiis
battery was commanded by our popular
sheritl. Captain John W. Wright. While
waiting for orders to advance with my artil
lery on the morning of the D:h of April,
Lieutenant James Grattan, also of this city,
and who was at that time acting ns adjutant
to my battalion, returned from the front,
ami, with his eyes full of tears, said: "Major,
the anuy cannot advance; can't you open the
way with your artillery." We had not been
able to haul enough ammunition from the
liuea near Petersburg for one hour's active
firing, and for six days neither mnu nor horse
had received a Mingle ration from the quarter
master, yet, if anything was to be attempted,
here seemed to be the occasion. Riding for
went to select a p wition for the artillery, we
had goue but a snort distance when, to our
surprise and mortification, we found our
selves in the presence of Generals Gordon and
Custer, surrounded by a Urge staff A glam i
told the story. The tiring was still going on,
especially on the left. 8o soon as recognised
by General Gordon, I was ordered to cause
the firing to cease. I directed Adjutant Grat
tan to go to the right while 1 went to the left,
and ascending a lull found "Johnson's list
tery," commanded, as before stated, by Cap
tain Wright, actively engaged, atul when the
order was given to "cease tiring" the question
came from many. anxious, trembling lips,
"What for? What s the matter?" The reply
sent a psng of anguish to every heart too dee|
for utterance. With the last deep-toned am:
detisnt sound sent forth by this brave Rich
tuond battery, the great heart of the noble
army of northern Virginia hail ceased to beat
forever; and then there "was slilluesi as of
death."

During the cantonment at Centerville the
«no»t solemn and picturesque scene was en
acted that the army of the Potomac had yet
bean called on to take part in Two of the
*Ttgn Rifles" of the nilant Wheat’s bnttal-
ton, had forced a guard and lesitted an officer-
in the discharge ot Ids duty. Tnev were tried

burn's tur\ *l 1 ou the road to Black-
<Fctock£it2L l £* "tbeted. At 12
^dtsn, the regiments marched out
in columns of companies, and by tap of drum
look their positions in close columns by di
vision, on three sides of a pquare, facing in
ward*, Taylor on the left, Eizey on the right,
Trimble on the third side. In the center of
the open space were two white stakes, ten
feet opart. Then came a covered wagon,
escorted by two companies with fixed bayo
nets and loaded guns. The cortege wheeled
slowly round tho exterior of the open space;
the condemned got out, their coffins were
token from the wagon and placed by the
stakes, and they sat on them. Each was at
tended by a priest, in clerical vestments,
whose consolations were eagerly received.
They were clad in the picturesque uniform of
their company, the scarlet fez or skull-cap,
light brown jacket, open in front, showing
tlie red shirr, large Turkish trowsers, full and
fastening just below the knee, of white and
bine stripes, white garters and shoes. When
they were in position and the wagon driven
away, the left hand corner of the square
opened and two sections of their own com
pany, in full and perfect uniform appeared,
marching in slow time down the center,
arms shouldered, and wheeled, each sretion
opposite a man ani a coffin, at ten puces
distant. They ordered arms. The major-
general and staff then rode to the center. The
• Field Officer of the I>.iy" read the findings
of the court and the sentences. Tlie officers
in charge of the firing parties ordered an in
spection of arms. A n officer caused the con
demned to kneel, tied their arms behind
them and around each Htake, and drew u
black bandage over their eyes. The silence
was oppressive; not a breath was heard in
that vast concourse. Around the square had
gathered thousands from the neighboring
camps, but tho ring of the ramrods in the
empty guns rattled upon the uutuiiin air
sharp ami clear. Tlie sun shone brightly and
lit up the picturesque group around which
such interests clustered, like a scene in some
grand drama. Tlie words of command vi
brated quick and sharp: "Load at Will;
Ready! Aim! Fire!!" One volley as from
one gun, and the condemned sprang forward
and fell over, the one on his face, the other
onliisside. Much was the first military cx
ecution in tlie army of tlie Potomac.

"HOW HE I.IftThNKO TO THE BKItKL YKI.
There was one kind of music which always I
interested ami delighted Stonewall Jackson. I
It wits tlie "rebel yell" of his troops. To this
grand chorus he never failed to respond. Tlie |
difference between tlie regular "hurah" of I
the federal army, and the irregular, wild yell I
of the confederates, was as marked as the dif- j
ference in their uniforms. The rebel yell was I
n peculiar mixture of sounds, a kind of weird I
shou*. Jackson wnsgreefed witii it whenever I
lie mnde his appearance to the troops, on the [
march or in battle; and just as invariably he I
would seize his old gray nap from his head in I
Acknowledgment, and his "littl sorrel " know-1
ing his habit, would break into a gallop and I
never halt until the sheut imd censed. I re-1
member one night, at tattoo, this cry broke I
forth in toe camp of ttie Stonewall brigade, I
and was taken up by brigades and divisions,
until it rolled over field and wood throughout I
the whole cor|Mi. The gcueral came hastily I
and bureheaded from his tent, and going up I
to the fence near by, lie leaned upon it and I
listened in quiet to the rise, climax, and con- I
elusion of that strange serenade, raising ids I
head to catch tlie hist sound, as it grew I
farther, and until it died away like an echo I
along tho mountains. Then turning toward I
his tent ho muttered, in half s diloquv, "That I
was tlie sweetest music 1 ever lieaid."

addition to this trouble my stomach was in a
terrible condition, having refused all kinds of

first physicians After a careful examination
of my case, your Dr. Starkey said to me, *1
don't think 1 can do anything for you.’ 1 had
heard and read of the Oxygen so long that 1
was anxious to try it if only to gut u little* re
lief: so on April 8ili, 1881, 1 began the Office

in my stoumcli and a little motion of the

down a (light of stairs, which threw mu away
