Wilkesbarbe, Pa??? December 21.???Thu sit*
nation it Nantfooke is unebangod. At 1:30
this afternoon the relief party were still push
ing toward the imprisoned men, and have
been spurred on to greater efforts by a signal
they had received, which indicates that there
is life beyond. Tapping upon an iron air pipe
was heard l>y the rescuers, and they naturally
conclude that therein yet good ground* of
hope that at least some of the men may be res
cued alive. It is the opinion of some of the
liest miners that they cannot reach the men
for some days, owiug to the extent of the ob-
atrnctlons. Others arc ranguine euougli to ox
pert that they will reach tho men within the
next ten hours at tho longest.
At about 0 o???clock this evening, the work of
the colouring party was suddenly Interrupted
by the fall of sandrock and culm. The men
were working on a steep incline when tho vast
macs fof debris came crashing down toward*
them with great violence. They tied for
their lives, and although they escaped nn
injured, several of them had very narrow e*
rapes. The work of digging for tho Imprisonod
men it, for the time being, suspended, but tho
officials in charge are making strenuous efforts
to overcome the difficulties and continue their
labors.
an AVAi.Axmr. or ??\ki> bock.
The fill of rand and culm at So. 1 slope in
Nant icoke. this evening, did not come from tho
surface, ns was feared nt first, but from an
upper chamber. The officials In charge, after
nn exploration, thought it could be overcome
with a few hours work, and at 11:20 p.ra. a
new gang of flight men were preparing to go
down. Three men. .fame* Turner. John Ab
salom and Jos. Warm* were caught in the fall.
Though not badly injured they were
rxtrimfid with great difficulty. The
men who were at work are now
afraid to re enter the mine, and there now ap
pears to he no possible hope of recovering tho
imprisoned men alive. They have been im
prisoned sineo Friday morning, and oven
though they may have lived for a time in the
hrotitwork*. they must die of starvation, if
from no other cause, it Is believed it will
take several days to iicnetrato the mass of
earth now obstructing the passages, Tho ex
cite ment around the mine is ihdescribahle.
Women and children, who have hardly closed
their eyes sineo Friday, are made nearly
rraxy bv the fresh calamity. Tho screams
and walls of anguish from the women rend
the air, while the disheartened and exhausted
miners sit around tho mouth of tho mine in
sullen despair. Crowds of people for mites
around are coming to view the scene of deso
lation. Tho town of Xanticoke is a place of
mourning and lanicntution.
AM. lion: AIIANDO.VKI).
At 12:10 this morning the mine officials nt
Xanticoke decided to abandoti work in the
air shaft*. on account of tho cave in and the
presence or fire damp. All attempts to get
the miming men out alive have now been
abandoned, hut the work through tho tuuncl
will. be pushed steadily forward. It will
profiahly In* alsiut two weeks Iwfore tho hodies
of tho miming men arc reached.

The relatives of tho victims were in the wild!

Mrs. Klvclcr, tho old mother of tho three
Kivelcr brothers, was at death???s door from
weakness and shock, and iiiuuy other relative*
and friends of the victim* were completely I
prostrated. The officials in charge of the res
cue work were forced to abandon all workl
from the air shaft by several irresistible con
elusions. Investigations at an early hour this]
morning show that the sand rock and culm
has fallen to such an extent that tho inlno in
which the imprisoned men wero confined was
now filled to the roof, and that the men are

Wff.KKSBARBK, ??? Pa., December ??*.???Xiantf-
ccke never witnessed a sadder Christmas. The
festive gatherings in household and church
were overshadowed by the prevailing gloom
and sorrow. None could forget the terrible
fate of tho twenty-six men and hoys bnried
200 feet below ground, in the dark chamber*
of slope 2. Alter further discussion and con
sultation by the engineers today, tho company
finally decided to sink a new shaft from
the surface at a point dircctlv nl/ove
where the bodies are supposed to bo. This
shaft will !>e about 175 feet deep, and will take
from four to six weeka to complete, even with
the most rapid work. The excavating of the
blocked gangway from the foot of the slope is
being steadily carried on day and night, but it
is a very slow' process, and months will elapse
before the mino Is cleared. Prayers were of
fered this morning in every church through
out Wyoming VaJJeyfor the unfortunate men.

found that as fast as the debris is removed it

victims are undoubtedly buried beneath tho

firmament.
First came the twinkling pleiades on their
mournful quest, traversing once
more the heavenly plain as
though they still had hopes that their tireless
search that had continued through all the
long centuries of the past might be at last re
warded. Aldebaron followed, his bloodshot
eye glowing with a deeper intensity through
the frosty atmosphere. Stalwart Orion climbed
the spangled steeps as he had done often and

whose cold glitter the eyes of earth???s million*
