Mollio was crazy with grief when informed
of what she had done, and went on in most
extravagant style. Tho evidcnco indicates
that the killing was not intentional, but that
the murderess in her drunken craze was ignor

Mrs. Slater, wife of Mr. Fred 81atcr, was

two gcutlcmen. who reached him just in time
to save him. The oldest child, about two rears
of age, the wife, the colored girl and baby,
eight months old, wero drowned. The baby

too late to restore life. Two other bodies wero

Wednesday's Register contains a long article
from the pen of Thomas J.ijmiottc, city editor,
in which be criticises the method* of N. G.
Gonzales, tho manager of thoColumbin bureau
of the Charleston News and Courier.
Shortly after one o’clock, in the day,
a serious difficulty occurred between
Gonzales and Lamottc in the office of
Commissioner or Agriculture Butler. Major
Ransom,Colonel Butler and your correspondent
were present. Lamottc came in to gather what
news lie could, aud was engaged in conversa
tion with the above uamed gentlemen when
Gouzalc* made his appearance on a similar
mitsiou "He spoke pleasantly, and deliberately
took ofl’his overcoat.
Nobody had tho slightest idea that he med
itated attacking Ixmotte. He stepped a few
pat es toward where the latter was standing and
struck him a stinging blow under the left eve.
Colonel Butler, quick at lightning, was be
tween them. l!e caught Gonzales aud held
him, while Major Ransom got Lauiotte into an
adjoining room.
The news of the attack on Mr. I.amotte hav
ing been conveyed to Mr. C. R. Calvo, Jr., pro
prietor of the Register, ho scut for Mr, La-
motte, and hearing from him the parUculars
of the assault, Mr. Calvo went to the office^ of
Mr. (ionrales, but he wm not in. He then
Mr. Gonzales met Mr. Calvo in tront of the
lower window of the drug store, and the
latter proceeded to denounce the attack of the
former on Mr. Lomotte oa cowardly, when Mr.
Gonzales struck him. and threw him off hit
balance. Mr. Odvo recovered, drew a cowhide,
and struck Mr. Gonzales repeated blows on the
neck and over the head.
Both parties regained au upright position,
wheu Mr.Gonzales drew a self-cocking pistol,
which he did not lire, but used as a club, and
with the hammer of which he repeatedly ent
Mr. Calvo on the head.
I .ate in the aflornoon Calvo’s younger
biother attacked Gonzales near Mancke's bar
room. and the two soon clinched, both with
pistols in their 1 and*. Three or four persous
threw themselves upon the two belligcranta
and forced them ap*rt.
A strange circumstance was revealed
at Spaitaiburg one day List we»k. A
Dr. Mitchell, from Washington, about seventy
vears old went to fcpartanburg asking the way
to the Gowensville neighborhood in tho north
western corner of the county. He secured a
conveyance and went, the object of bis search
being Mrs. Cbok.tke wife ofa poormaii who had
a hard and unsuccessful struggle in the battle
of life. She was the daughter of Dr. Mitchell,
although he had never seen her. uor even
heard of her birth until recently,
and she was over forty years of age. His
story is this. Out in Tennessee, about the
time the Mexican war wa* breaking out, he
married a beautiful young lady of good family.
For some reason or other her parents opposed
the match, and they made it so unpieasaut for
him that he concluded to join a regiment for
Mexico, and see if he could not flud peace in;
the army of invasion. Before the troops wero;
disbanded he heard of the death of his
wife, but he did not bear that an infant
was torn in her last illness which survived.
Knowing nothing of this event he did not re
turn to Tennessee, hut all these years have
been spent in other places. Some time ago he
saw a notice iu some paper coming from one
who claimed to be his daughter. At first he
dismissed the subject ts a singular coin
cidence and nothing more. After a;
time, the matter working ou his mind,'
he began a correapondence which led to,
the discovery of his daughter. He came on
here aud finding her lot a hard one relieved
her wants, and has made arrangements to buy
her a home, so ns to make her comfortable and
Independent. He has returned to Washing
ton, nut said he would come back in a few
weeks to look after bis daughter's home.
After his first marriage he never married
again, but lias been wandering alone all these
years.
The situation of Mary E. Williams, in jail
under sentence of death for poisoning her hus
band and three ste|ichildrcii last summer, pre
sents a cAiO that seldom occurs to delay the
administration ofjusticc. At tho time of her
trial and on rising to receive her scutcnco sho
intimated to the presiding Judge that she was
in a fair way to become a mother, aud in view
of her statement, which however medical au
thority at tlint time could not confirm, tho
judge appointed the 12th of this
month as tho day of execution, allowing am*
pie time for testing tlio truth of tho prisoner’s
representation. As the time is rapidly draw
ing nigh, the sheriff deemed it his duty to call
medical experts to make a professional exami
nation of the prisoner, and on .Thursday sum
moned Dn. John F. Liudsay and Hugh G.
Jackson for that purpose. After making the
examination they tarnished the sheriff the fol
lowing written statement:
Yorkvillk, 8. C'. t January 2H.—Wei the under-
signed practicing physicians of York county, buy
ing been called on bv JL It. Glenn, sheriff of said
county, to examine Mary K. Williams, now confin
ed Jn York county Jail and under sentence of
dfiatb, to be executed February 12th, 1*86, declare
that we find the said Mary K. Williams in a state
of pregnancy. Jons F. Lindsay. M. D. •
II. G. Jackson, M. V. j
The sheriff has forwarded a copy of this
statement to the governor, to Judge Kershaw,
who presided at the trial, the state solicitor
and the prisoner's counsel, and is awaiting a
respite, which of course tho govornor will
grant.

BURNEDTO DEATH.
St Louis, February 5.—Last night six rail
road bands went into their shanty to oat sup
per. They were gathered around a hot stove,
when it exploded aud the men were enveloped
in flames and horribly burned. Investigation
showed that an enemy of some of the men
bad fastened the door so as to prevent egress,
and bad emptied a quantity or coal oil down
the stove pipe, which led up
through the low roof of the shanty. The
men wero unable to get out, but the appear*
anco of the flames and their cries brought as
sistance from the’outoido. Tho door was burst
open and the men dragged out aud rolled in
the snow. The flesh peeled off their faces,

boys aud one little girl, were burned to death
in their house hut night. Nothing definite U
known of the horrible affair, except that the
