New Yoik, Jnns 0.— [Special.]—My old
friend and revered employer, the New York
Sun, hu lately fallen In loro with tho whole
of the Vanderbilt family, and even with some
of Its attachments, like Chsaneey M. Depew,
end even the Drexel-Morgan syndicate. No
thing with which the name of Vanderbilt la
connected ie ever mentioned now in rite Son
except In terms of superlative praise. Mora
than that, if anybody attempts to say anything
against even tho dead members of that illus
trious family ho is likely to bo taken to talk
by somebody on the editorial staff of this
brilliant Journal. Thus, a fow days ago, Tax
Atlanta Constitution alluded in some way
to the late Commodore Vanderbilt aa “rough
and uncouth.'' Tho Sun Immediately took np
this statement and published an editorial
paragraph saying:
"A moat unequivocal mistake la made by
Mleemcd contemporary, Tbs Atlanta Ooxvnri-.
tion, wben It speaks of the late Commodore Van
derbilt aa 'rough and uncouth.' This la totally
any gentleman In New York more
personality more graceful
gulabed In bearing, oe ono
in hla
. dlstlu-
to of greater ejegance
lor found In tho whole city."
Now a newspaper, Just aa the old clans did,
can make Its object to protect the aoolat, pub
lic and financial Interest! of a family, bnt
there must be a limit to averythlng. Tossy
that the late Commodore Vanderbilt waa
more powerful In his personality, more grace
ful of peracD, more dutlngnlahod In boaring,
or born to greater elegance of manner than
any gantlemsn in New York ia aimply child
ish talk. Ho produced upon me the aamo im-
preasion when I waa a school boy, and he
came to Europe on board hla yacht, tha North
Star. At all the porta where the yacht
touched, flying the flag of tha New York yacht
clob, it was received with customary cour
tesies, and of course relieved from all
the port charges and dues imposed upon
other vessela. In return for that Commodore
Vanderbilt allowed people to come and vlow
bis yacht, which wu qnlto a novelty In Eu
rope, for no one there had uen before a picas-
ore vend uclegantly fitted u this was, and
able lot rota tha ocean. I will nsvar forgot
the impression which Commodore Vanderbilt
J reduced upon my youthful Imagination when
raw him standing near tbo whed, with hla
w hits “choker,” and in tho commanding atti
tude which every body knowa to have been
Inherent In him. The Image of hla personali
ty remained engraved in my memory at deep
ly as some of tho nobloat figures of Van Dyck
orVelaiqnei. It seemed to mo at that time
that with the exception of Lord Palmerston
and Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Vic
toria, 1 had never aeon In my life a
more commanding and noble figure than
that of tho whlto-chokorad American
millionaire, Tho Intonation of that person
ality kept In ray bead for a great number of
years, bnt when, some twenty-five or thirty
yean later, I came to this country and uw
tie very one wblte-chokered commodore
driving In a buggy to Macomb’s Dam, drink
ing gin and sugar with tho common-looking
mon ho associated with, taking with hla fin
gers pieces of oold corned beef from tho free
lunch counter dilb, and using tha language
that he did, all my youthful illusions were
nine. When I subsequently learned about
hla relations with the clairvoyants and the
edltoreasea of a free love paper, tho slaters
Wocdhull and Clafiln, tha case of tho old com
modore waa settled in my mind. It was, of
coarse, of no contequenoo to him, bat it was
of great benefit to mo.
To my that it would be difficult to name any

grntleman in New York “more potverfu
hla personality, mors graceful of pencil <
distinguished in bearing, or one born to wn
clrganco of manner than Commodore Vginaor-
blit” Isa piece of absolute absurdity. That
tha man had a phenomenal genius for business
aud a moat commanding appcaranco cannot bo
questioned, bnt that ho had in hla composition
any of tho elomenta which make a gontleman
cannot bo asserted. A good story illustra
ting this Is told apropos or one of
the games of whist which ho
used to have In the Union club. Two more or
lest bashful and punctilious Englishmen wore
introduced Into tbo clnh and taken Into tho
card room to see tho great American gonlus
playing wlilaL They were dazzled by hla ap
pearance, and one of them remarked that ha
would like to ace him stand up and talk. They
waited awhile, and when tha rubber wu over
tbo commodore did get np, showing bla six
feet odd, and saying to 1 '

and (350,000 to Allegheny City fur establish

bursements which ha constantly does for rim!-
lor purposes. Then, again, look at the dona

and giving the draft afterwards to unto lawyer
to put It In shape. Ono day ho had to nuke
a contract for a ferry-boat boiler. He wrote It
out, spelled the worn boiler “h-o-y-l-o-i,” and
save It to hla young legal adviser, Samuel
Berger, to put It in shape, or course tho first
thing Bancr did wu to change tho spoiling of
the word bollsrand when ho began todoso.tho

All this doesn’t interfere with tho fact tl

tbit the man was a genius, but It certainly

mo himself, some
uven or eight yean ago, that his father called
him "a dirty sucker" in public, cousiderei
him unfit for any business nnd that, conae-
qnrnt upon it,Mr. William H. avoided meeting
hla father in preaenco of any outsider. Tnat
was certainly a queer way for the moit grace
ful person In New York to address bin son.
Then again, although business Is business
lu n young country like this, and nobody
brgrudges a man if ha deviates to some
cstent from tho atrlctly legitimate
K th of making an honest dol-
r, there is a limit to everything, nnd one
should certainly bo drawn at tho privileges
which t man enjoys in Joining a club. This
most graceful and distinguished person, when
ho went to Europe, Joined the New York
I aeht clnb for the uke of avoiding the pay
ment of boat charges and other dues, and re
signed tha membership as soon as hla trip wu

All this seems to be enough to show tho real
nature of the man, bnt u all great man are,
tbis on* it inbjectcd to b aeries of postmortem
considerations, and those who want to hurt hit
memory moat will praise him moat. To
speak of him u Iho Sun doe, in an
absolute absurdity. To uy that Wall
street doesn’t afford hit like ie silly. It
the majority of tha members of the stock ex
change are not particularly refined in their
manner, there Is a lane number of them who,
fcythoiraodal accomplishments aud manners,
surpass anything that tha lata commodore had
any conception of. To uy that in tha way of
elegance of manners no man superior to tho
