ef Monaghan. At I.urgenaevoral militiamen
have been wonnded, some houses wrecked and
several persona shot, seme being dangerously
wonnded. One was shot dead. The troops
have been ordered from Armagh to clear the
Streets. Almost all the constables were In
jured.
Uli.fa«t, June 9.—lust night, a mob of
Orangemen made an attack upon a tavern
kept by a Catholic, named Doffy. The police
wore promptly on the scene and after a stub,
torn contest, during which they used their
carbines, drove the mob away in disorder.
The rioters reassembled with increased
strfSfth, and again attacked Duffy's, this
time overpowering the police and driving
them from the place. In the first assault,
Chief of Police Carr was wonnded and now
lies in a critical condition.
When the Orangeman returned to the fight
they were accompanied by a large number of
factory girls, who goaded or shamed the men
into the battle and formed a most dangerous
element. When the office re abandoned Daffy’s
the mob at once took complete possession of
the tavern. Kplggots were sot running and
everybody was invited to help himself accord
ing to his taste. All barrels of lbiuor found
in stock were carried into the street, lifted up
high and 1st fall until they broke and
until
liberated their contents. All the furniture
was carried out and piled in tha
center of tha roadway and burned in a bonfire
to furnish the rioter* with a light during their
debauch. Men, youth and girls drank until
thsy fell holplsss in the gutter*, girls acting
with greater fury during the earlier stags*
of the orgies than mon. Noise, profanity and
disorder were terrible. The mob ended their
work here by the firing of th* tavern itself,
and it birned to the ground. Than stronger
men, who had beoome infuriated and not over
powered by their potations, ran through the
streets, wrecking and pillaging wherever they
weati and Increasing their following the
farther they proceeded.
Thee* rloton after while congregated
around the police stations and stoned the
ptae* until they tired. They then marched
down to another tavern. The police hastened
thither in advance and attempted to protect
property, but they were overpowered and
driven away. The mob loft in posses if on
treated the tavern as they had Duffy’s, turned
on all th* tana, brake flail barrels in the
streols, msde bonfires of the furniture, and
finally set fire to the building.
The police returned, and this

Belfast, Juno la—The poopl* here have
been wrought to a state of gnat excitement
by the riotous demonstrations sf the orange-
men during tbs put two days. All the work
la stopped, th* store* closed and many resi
dences closely barricaded. Mobt are on every
street, prepared for further deeds of vtoleneo.
The orangemen aro greatly Incensed at tho
constabulary for firing upon thoin, and threat
en to sack their barrack*
stones and
the us* of th* rioters, when they ran short of
missies. Women and young girl*
desperately entreated the men to eonUnno

apronfulls of fash stones, and when tho
woman’s entreaty failad, th* women and girls
drove the men on by aavag* threats. The
polios station is a modorete-sisod house. Whan
the mob attacked the building the pollco
responded with a volley fired from tha door
way, but the rioters toon drove th* ofilctrt in
ana they retreated up stair*, and thsncs main
tained tn* fight by shooting from the window*
or tho front bedroom, on th* second Door.
They held their position for a half hour,
during which the battle was hot and savage on
both sides, when they were reinforced by the
arrival of soventy fresh officers, Th* increased
energy of the pollco warfare served but to
aggravate the mob, and they became downright
ferocious
“They were actually maddened by th* sight
of thsir comrades snot down, everything
bowling with agony in th* streets. 1 have
since heard an oflicor say that be never knew
a mob to show greater vldousness, violence,
pluck and determination. Despite their ’des
peration, the rioters hurled thsu missiles with
regularity and precision, as If they hsd been
drilled in stono-throwing. When th* man in
front had oxhxuated their ammunition they.
would retire to the rear to receive fresh arm-
falls from the women, and then make way for
thoir comrades with new suppliss. Hues* of
th* stone throwing was quite extraordinary.
1 saw a man throw a stono with such vigor
that it crashed through tbs window, struck the
rear wall, and reboundod with such fore* that
it struck and hurt a policeman. Tho hotter
arm*d ef th* rioter* canted what w* call here
Belfast kidneys. Thee* are slonsa about fire

broad, aad weigh on an average about one and
a half pounds. Thera ware many boys among
th* rioters, and they were so desperate and
placky as th* mon.
