Father Felton Appeals Foar Hoars to
Neighbors.
CanxEsviLLE, Ga, Jnly 7.—[Bpoelal.]—
Ths largest convention ever held In Barlow
eonnty convened, this morning to select dele
gates to the gnbsmatorUl and congressional
conventions.
At nine o’clock Dr. Felton began xn address
to hlx followers, at ths courthouse, which ho
continued qjittl one. Colonel T. Warren Aiken
introduced the doctor, (peaking feelingly
manner in whleh Tbe Constitution hu
Ebosed Urn, and reminding the people time
and again that tho issue wu not between Gor.
don and Bacon, bnt wu between The Con
stitution end Dr. Felton.
Dr. Felton mtdo a most plaintive appeal for
his own county to stand by him. He spoke foar
solid hours and virtually told his hearers that
If they went back on him in this hour of trlsl
they would ny to the state, “Vos, Felton is
slanderer." It wu not *n lane between Boeon
and Gordon with him but between Gordon and
Felton. He inferred that Gordon bad gotten
*11 be wanted and that ho coaid do without
Bartow’s vote, bat that that vote would be
holm of Gilead for his own aching breast.
The Bacon men were thus kept on hand
nnder tb* guise of vindicating Dr. Felton from
tbo charge of slander and under hit appeals
for thslr help.
Greet confusion prevailed at the con
clusion of the doctor’s speech, caused
by Colonel Graham uklng him if
would rapport General Gordon if nomi
nated, many of tho doctor’* friendx shontlng:
"That’* not the question,” "We will answer
yonntthe ballotbox," etc.
' Then for ] 0 mlnntu the excited crowd yelled
at the top of their voleeo, "Hurrah for Gor
don!” "Hurrah for Bacsnl” "Hurrah for Fel
ton!”
Tho doctor In tho meantime tried hard
speak, bnt the furious crowd would not hear
him forther. Ho never answered Colonel
Graham's qaestlnn, and he quit trying to
speak amidst tbe frantic yells of on excited
and furloni people. Such another scene wu
never witnessed In Bartow county.
The Gordon men assembled at tho
open house it ten n. m., which wu soon
filled. A primary meeting wu organised by
electing Colonel K. H. Jones chairman, and
Mr. J. G. Montgomery secretary. Eloquent
and logical addressee were mads by Colonel
B. D. Graham, Colonel Capers, John Aiken
and Colonel Jones.
At one o'clock the county convention wu
called to order by tho chairman of tho execu
tive committee, B. H. Dodd.
The crowd wu so large that tho specious
courtroom could not hold the number, sad tho
meeting wu xdjonrned to tho park In ths roar
of the courtbouM. As soon u order wu te
etered Colonel Graham placed In nomination
u permanent chairmen of tho meeting, Colo
nel B. H. Jones, Captain A ( F. Wolloy wu
placed in nomination by Mr, Warron Aiken.
Thla wu thought to ho a teat vote, bnt in
reality It wu not, u many votod for Wolley,
who declared that they were for Gordon,
tho count it wu ascertained tnat Jones re
celved 404 voles *ud Wolley 430. Captain
Wolley took tho chair, and upon the appoint
ment of secretaries tho meeting wu do ilarod
organized and ready for business. Colonol

for the office.
The vote on tho substitute wu taken In the

an idea u to whether tho rabstltato wu adopt

terwards withdrawn, as the chairman had an
nounced tho vote u being In favor of tho sub

Colonel Joneo then called npon all true
democrats to return to tho courthouse, and
Immediately the Gordon men entered the
courtroom amid deafening cheers. A new
meeting wu organised, and Colonel Joan
made chairmen, with Messrs, Willingham ani
Harris u secretaries.
The original resolutions as introduced
by Colonel Grahsm were re-read by General
Albert 8. Johnson, and unanimously adopted,
over four hundred end twenty votes being
cut In their favor. Colonel H. D. Capers then
moved that It is the sense of thla convention
that General John B. Gordon is tho oholeo of
tho democratic party of Bartow couoty for tho
e Alee of governor. Amid a stoim of applaaso
the motion wu adopted. Tellers were
called for snd appointed. The chairmen
called for tellers to represent Ur. Bacon. As
many Bacon men had entered tho convention
they were uked to act, bat declined, uylng
they bed left the ramp convention and hod
determined to rapport General Gordon. Among
them were Colonel Bob Rodgors and Crawford.
Th* vote wu token, and General Gordon re-

Ths following dslsgstes were then elected
to tho state gubernatorial convention:
From the eonnty at large—Colonel B. H.
