The most sensational feature of the case la tha
fact that Shanahan, who is mid to have been
the drat man that recalved stamps, Is supervl-

der very heavy official bonds for his good
conduct in office. It seems that Immediately

Story, which hu hitherto been scarcely more
than mentioned in tbe account* of Starvation
camp. Ho uys;
"Bacon, abrimps and seal-skin stew, all In
small qiantltles, had been onr fare for over
two weeks end there wu not e full round of
rations left. More then btif tbe men In camp
were incapable ol work but that wu little
matter for there wu no more to do than three
could handle. The steady cold made us all
drowsy and thsre wu tha wont danger in
■leep. If * man wu allowed to havo his
sleep out ho would certainly never wake, so
we had to make * rule that no one should
sleep more then two hours at a time. It be
gan to look with only one dey between us
and starvation u if It might bo better for us
all to go to sleep together and die unconscious
of tho terrible cold and the pugs of hunger
We bad plenty of hunting, Ashing end cook-
ing utensils, ammunition and ail that, but what
good were they? Tbero wu no game, no Ash.
During all our camp, we caught only two Ash
I was the huuterof the party and had tramped
tbe legion over and over and rarely bad the
luck to get a shot at anything.
"Tho day before we came to our last round
of rations I had discoveied the trucks of a
bear. I bod followed them about nntll I
exhausted trying to meet the beut but had
utterly failed. On thla day a light snow foil
in the morning, just enough to obscure the
trail, but still I bunted. I gave It up late in
tbe afternoon and returned to the camp.
Rrslnerd had gone to the shrimping ground
and was still absent when I laid by my gun.
.Suddenly he appeared running down Come-
teiy ridge u fut u bis poor weak lep would
bring him. We ail started np and waited his
coming in tbe most painfal excitement.
When he reached the camp he fell to the
ground all out of breath. The men crawled
to bi* assistance and two of them raised hla
brad in their srms. He piped and looked at
us wildly.
“Brainerd,” exclaimed the lieutenant,
"what Is it?"
"Bear, bear,” wu all he could answer In *
choking whisper.
“Where man, where?” I cried reaching for
my gun all trembling and quivering with
hope aud fear.
"There,” he said, faintly pointing towards
the ridge; "he followed after me; ne’a com
ing.”
"How can Iteli tho terriblo excitement that
prevailed? The men were In a perfect freniy.
Cruel suffering had made them worse then
uttreuonable. Borne of them conld think of
nothing but coning poor Bralnord for not
killing tha bear, and were with difficulty re
strained from falling npon him to wreak ven
geance. Ho had not taken hia gun with him,
nobody ever did who went shrimping, and
tbiy cursed end raved at that and bnrst Into
It are at the lou of their last chance for life,

Ibty couldn’t have gone beyond the top of
tho ridge without breaking down, to uy noth,

Tbo lieutenant used bis auth

plan of tho hunt wu arranged. It wu really
only a few minutes, but it seemed en hour.
Jan, the Esquimaux, and I started np the
ridge to meet the bMr if heihould continue
toward* ns.
"Hardly had we pt t rod from the camp
when n long white nose appeared over an Ice-
covered rock at tbe top of the hill. The men
set np a shout end I think it nnnerved me,
but it wu a long renp shot, nearly three hun
dred yards, end the target wu email. I
raised my gun and taking quick tlm, fired.
The bell mined but it did not p wide of it*
mark. The bur was startled. He paused
just too short a time to give the Esquimaux a
ebance at him, and tnmed tall ana ran. I
heard the howli end groans of disappointment
and rag* behind me. I believe that some of
those poor, half-starved, half-ftezsn men
would tutvo shot at me In their anger If they
had had their guns nt hud.
"Jan,” I uld hastily, "take the course to
the left ud go round the rldp end hup well
to the west touts get betwoen the bear ud
water. 1 will go In the same way on the
tort.”
The ftlthlhl Esquimaux understood the plan
at once ud set out without a word. I crawled
to the top of the rldp u test u I could ud
sew tho beer a long way out of rugs still on the
run. He turned round for a second ud looked
back,udthenaslfaalisdcd that he wu pur

after him but keeping out of hia sight u much
»s possible, crawled, ud ran, udslidupud
down the ley slopes making all tha tlms for
tho water. 1 wu feverish with fear. It
seemed u if every possible obstruction got In
my way ud many a time I fell to the ground.
It wu n terrible chase. May I never have
another like It!
“It seeua incredible now, but I actually
went ten miles ont of my way to get In Grant
of that bear. I knew that he would stop run
ning when he got over hla scar* ud uw no
body in pursuit, and I hed to take this round
about course to keep ont of sight. Mighty
littlo of that distance was paued on the run.
Moat of It wu crawled. But I had no thought
of giving up. I plugged on end at lait.two hours
and a hair after leaving camp, I pined the
position I wanted. I climbed e low hill ud
there wu brain 1,000 yards away sitting down
after hi* hard ran within thirty yards of open

He conld still escape, bnt hla back wu towards

Bakdebsville, Ga., Aogut 0.—[Special.]—
The contest for senator and roprenntatires In
this county hu been s very gpirlted one. The
candidates hove been.on tbe igo for several
weak*, ud their respective friends were work
ing vigorously for them. As the roturu from
the first country precincts begu to come in It
was pretty clearly indicated that Mean. B.
J. Moyo ud Beverly D. Evens, Jr„ would be
tbe representatives, ud that the race for sen
ator between Hon. O. B. Pringle ud Major
Thomu O.Wkker would beexceedlngly close.
Letelut night speculation wu rife as to the
probable result.
Both sides felt confident, ud there wu no
certainty about the matter until the official
rt turns from all the districts were consolidat
ed. Pringle'i majority over Wicker
Is 4 votes. (In the 95th
district (Ceto's) one hundred and fifty ne-
g eeawero allowed to vote, ud the remit
ereitood: Wicker 176, Pringle 19. Throw
ing out thie precinct, which In all probability,
will be done, Pringle’a majority would reach
to 101 Instead of three, aaIt it. A bitter and
uncompromising fight was made Ire the
whisky men on Colonel Pringle. The follow
ing is the consolidated vote:
For senator—C. B. Pringle, 761; T. O.
Wicker, 757.
Forrepreeentativee—B. J. Moya. 020: B. D.
Evans, Jr., 703; J. C, Harmon, 651; K. J. N,
Walden, 449.
The convention to nominate a senator will
convene bare on the 20th instut, ud • lively
session fgjexpected. Washington hat dociaroa
