DRINKING IN EWOLAWDi
Cr.atFroev.Mafllia TempmaM Cans. In
th. Past Twenty Yean.
Than It no country, perhaps, in tha world
tint its made non progroaa on tbe tom paramo
question in tbo put twenty yean than Ea-
f laud, writes a London eoneapondant of The
Boton Advertiser. Heavy drinking, accom
panied by brutal and vulgar sports, were not
long since common to every clan of society. It
harnot been over half a century wben even aome
of tbo ebnrches ware used foraecnlar purpose!
with aa much freedom u town halli, while the
pbraar, * drank ai a lord,” found 111 nte through
actual expotleneo. thl! class of peopl* having
i ha reputation of being Immodsrata In thslr
living. MinUtera and layman, mu tars and
tenants, magistrates, IndgM, nobles, and
rover.Ignanot long sines looked not only np»
frequent “tippling,'’ but heavy drinking, with
tbe eye of charity.
When I ray that the habit of drinking has
greatly changed, I do not by any maana infer
that there la nota tremendona amount of It
done In tbti country. Why, ovary servant and
dressmaker tbat comes to the house, ash-n
“garbage-chucker,’’ charwoman, and, In foot,
every man servant and maid servant, even the
porter who bring* your luggage to tha door,
will wait for smog of beer for bla Individual
servlets. If yon toy that yon bar* no beer
In tbe boat., he will extend his big dexter
heed for twopence to buy a needful article.
And it la not only tha laboring, th* common,
or the middle classes of society who ere the
■ejects of regular drinking, but there la not a
table la a hundred among th* better poopls
but has Its beer sad two or three kinds of wine,
with a little “hard stuff” to wind np with.
I will give on* or two examples, without
mentioning namca, which will give a good and
lotere-tlng illoetretlon of the aneleot practice
of dtlnkingead tbe extreme relnetanceof these
f< op't to give np on ancient cuztonr.
Not long since I dined with a very promt-
rent man, occupying every high professional
position and tn active member of tbe Church
JVmierance soriety. About a dozen gaeste
were ..sted at bis hospitable board. Toere
were three or fear different kinds of wine
■rend, and yet the good, generous host him-
self "louclitd not nor tasted not,” Bet he
kn.wlt was ancient osece to have it on his
tab!*; tbat a table would not be complete with
out It; that acme of hia guests enjoyed a glass
of g<od wive, be furnlred it, end did oot give
any Icclurr or advice against tba usage.
But ano'ber and certainly tba mort singu
lar, practice came under my observation a few
Sunriaysago. I wa. asked to preach that morn
ing in one of tba oldrat churches in the "old"
city of London, and tho following wee my «x-

ancient customs, the little barm there was

church, I wee met by the bradle; yes, the very
old beadle, aa real and Impatient as Dlekani ao
frequently and cunnlnsly describes. He waa
not dressed aa the regular church verger. In a
silk gown and ha did not wear thut solemn
and almost sepulchral expreaion, bat he wai

an elaborate sod richly embroidered profusioe
of gold laco and gilt bnttona, and with tha
t lrasanteat face and welcoming amtlea, stately
r aripg, and yat with the most polite maooers,
he ushered mo Into tbe veatry room. Theo,
with a bow and a smile, he laid: “Will yon
take sherry or port, sltf” On tbe table, on a
salver, were two goodsized decanters contain
ing the aforesaid wince, and with them waa a
plate of sweet bUcults.
