From tho time when he wu * boy to the

In etrly life Furlong adopted the eewmlll,
in, buelneeo, and almost •Imnltaneohely began
hia career of blood. T. It wu
at the ago of fifteen that he wu given
a responsible position in a sawmill, owned by
hia brother-in-law, at l’ina Bloom. One day
a colored teemster wu found- in hia wagon
dead. Bis throat wu cat, and several fatel
wounds were discovered in other parts of hia
body. It wu developed that young Forlong
had engaged the teamster in a quarrel, which
ended in the tragedy just described. Tho
murderer diaapoeared, and wu gone asTeral
years, when he returned to the ccene ef hia
crime, where he resumed hia desperate career,
without over having been called to acoount.
It must not bo supposed, however, that For*
long wu without his good qualities. Whilo
his character u a desperado made men afraid
of him, bis capacity u a mlllnun wu well
reoogniitd.
THE TUBtt IN SIS LIVE.
The reel tuning point in hie life wu a lit
tle over two year* ago, when Furlong fell un
der the notice of Ur. It. P. Bepperd, a wealthy
gentleman of Savannah. Ur. Beppard fitted
up s taw mill at Vancevilla, on the Bruotwtck
confidence In them, left It entirely to their
management. The charge of ouch a large
buaintia turned. Furlong's head completely.
He began drinking hearily, neglected hit wife
and family, and took to tho companlouahip
of wanton*. Ona of theae frail creatures,
whom ho imported from Savannah, gained
•neb mastery oveT him, that ahe floated her
colon under tho very eyes of her victim’* wife.
This aeon brought Furlong to hia tint aariona
trouble. Ono day he rode op to ble house with
his mistress, and taking her in, presented her
to hie wife, saying:
“Pocshontu, how do yen like this? Ain’t
•he a beauty.’’
The dishonored wife broke into teen, where*
upon her huebend salted her byths hair and
dragged her across the floor, stomping upon
her and breaking n chair to pleoq, across her
body. The pair then re-entend the buggy and
drove off, leaving the wife unco&acioua upon
the floor. There oho waa found several hours
later by tome pasting nelghbon. When her
story becamo known, tho utmost indignation
prevailed. Parlies of men were organised and
etaited out in pnnnlt of tho recreant husband.
Be was caught np with at a country house,
where he sat with a Winchester ride across hie
knee.
"I'll blew the brains out of the fliat man
who deres to ccmo near me,” he said deter
minedly.
For several hour* the posse stood at a re-
tpectahle distance, when deeming discretion
the better part of valor, they retired, and left
Furlong muter of the eltnatlon.

they did not dare to tali the story until tbo
