A BRUTAL DRUNKARD’S FREAK.
Larked, Kao., November 10—Near Marina,
in tba southeast corner of Hodgeman county,
lived until last Friday Sam Purple, waoso
natural brutality was enhanced by chronic
drunkenness. Hi* family consisted of him
self, hit wife, his wife’s sister and four little
children, tbe youngest of which was only
three weeks old. Friday morning Ins 'wife
arose as usual and prepared breakfast. She
then went to awaken her husnaud, which
enraged him. He sprang from hi# hod am,
seizing hit revolver, shot hia wife through
the body, killing her instantly. The new
born babe was next tired at, with
the same result. He next shot and
killed another of his children. His sister-
in-law, Miss Lowber, was tnen fired at, cae
ball passing through her arm and lodging
somewhere in her shoulder. As this empttod
his revolver, he proceeded to load his shotgun,
in order to complete the work. A slight mis
take in this was the only thing that stepped
the deadly proceedings. Powder was poured
into one barrel and by error, tbe shot into the
other. With this be endeavored to bio w off the
head of anotber|clii!d, bnt as there was uothiug
except powder in the barrel, tbe child's face
was only aeverely burned by the explosion.
A heavy blanket waa wound around the suf
fering child, aud tbis securely wrapped with
heavy wire, in hopes that ho might accomplish

use of the shot gun. The child will recovor,
although fearfully disfigured about tbo face.
Tbe murderer tb»n mounted a hurao and
stance across the field toward Marine, with
tbe avowed purpose of murdering hla wife's
father and mother. Before ho could ac
complish this, however, the wounded young
lady had made her way to the village and
notified the inhabitants of what
had happened, and they had h s
gregated for resistance. Seeing that cnn.

more, and surrendered himself to tbe authori
ties, a hero he was placed in jail, surrounded
by a heavy guard. Last night a nmb of a tout

ON THE GRAVE OK HIS WIFE.
Hartford. Conn., November 10.—About
9:S0o'clock this morning tbo police found Jcs-e II.
Lord, formerly one of tbe editors of the Post, more
recently on the Bouon Journal or Com merce, aud
latterly with the Scientific American, lying on tlie
grave ol bis vlfc, in the old North cemetery. He
had rhot himself through the head with a 32-call-
bre revolver. He was conveyed to the hospital
where bis wound was pronounced fatal. Ho is
about fifty-five years old.

Philadelphia, November 11.—An explo
sion occurred in tbe cigor box manufactory of
