The senate stands 27 democrats, three In*
dependent democrats, and twenty republican*,
llonse, fifty-four straight democrats, nine Indepen
dent democrats and flfly-one republicans. No la-
bor candidates were elected. The independents
were ail heretofore democrats, and claimed, while
tunning, to be democrats. It is nnderstool that
the republicans propose to nominate an iudopen
dent tor speaker, expecting thus to control Hie or
ganization of the house. The democrats expect
the cooperation of tho independents, as hereto

Dr. T. C. Powell, of high social and professional
standing, shot and killed Wm. Sharp, a young
white man, a son of State Representative Elect
John J. Sharp, of Nash county, In a bar room in
Rocky Mount, Tuesday evening. The shooting was
done in the delirium oi drink. Dr. Powell was
given into the hands of a deputy to be committed

McMahan, who escaped from I.ttVacss, Mexico,
Mon day last, when Hewlett Griner and his party
w ere- attacked and killed, has arrived In this city.
McMahan lays that Griner war killed by four
police officers, who were hired to commit the deed
by two brothers named Armigr?. Amigos pro
fessed warm friendship for Griner, but turned on
the Americans with treacherous vengeance a* soon
as the police opened attack.
A box of dry goods, clothing and a sum of money
arrived today from Charleston, consigned to the
Galveston News for the benefit of the Sabine Pass
Hifltrers. The donation was made upon the ad
vice of F. W. Dmwaon, editor of tho News and
Courier, or Charleston. The letter accimptuying
the contribution states that the same is made
through the Grace church branch of the Woman's
Auxiliary of the city of Charleston. The tetter
concludes:
"These offerings arc from hearts grateful tor
mercies granted to our city bv Alm'ghtyGod In
the late terrible vicissitudes.”
W. J. Burke, treasurer of Galvrston county, Is
missing from borne, and his family and friends are
greatly troubled OTer his prctraitcd absence. A
week ago today he left this cljf ostensibly for
Austin, although he had no particular business
catling him there now. His accounts are all right.
Bark’s Mends and family think be left the city
white laboring under mental aberration brought
about by excitement and despondency over his
recent defeat for re-election. He canvassedD-ho
city night and day for two months prtor.to tlio
election, and felt confident or success up to the
last moment, but was detested by Ja*. S. Waters,
by CCO votes. His wife opened one of his private
boxes and found a note addressed to their little
daughter, wherein he bids her good byo and says:
•‘Pray for papa.”
This l«ds some to suspect suicide.
It transpires that the tin box opened by’Burk’s
wife today contained other tetters from the mis
sing treasurer. In a note to his wife, he says:
“My heart is broken. Death Is my only hope.
You will find what money I have in a little tin
box. God bios you.’'
To D. D. Bryan, city editor of tlie Galveston
News, he left a note, stating that
•'Afatality ferns to hang over the treasurer’s
oOlce. Since the death of treasurer [tonkin, every
ires drror has become ruined."

Captain Fcott, of tlie rangers, received informa
tion Tuesday that a parly of wire-cutters wo rid

night, twelve miles from here. He at once gather
ed his rangers, and with n tew citizens, repaired to
Eboughc’s place and waited In ambush for the
cutters. At 11 o’clock, the cuttert were heard
coming up the line of the fence. Ther were per
mitted to pars a few of those in auih is'.i, but on
arriving opposite him, Csp'.uin Scott demanded
their surrender, stating they were rangers. Ills
omy answer was a pls'ol shot.
Then rthe firing became rapid on bath

On the read from Americas to Vienna is one
of the richest lands In the world. Vogetatton
grow* rich and dank, while the groat wreaths
of moss hanging from the wide spreading oaks
look like bridal veils. This renders all the
more remarkable a spot o'f about ono hundred
yards tijuare, by a tarn of the road just three
miles out of Vienna. Upon this spot not a
blade of grass has been known to sprout in
years. In Its center stands a giant oak, which
has lost its verdure, and is nowshakon from
its roots by tho wind.
Ten years ago two little white girls, the
daughters of a farmer, were on thoir way ono
morning to school in Vienna. They never
reached the sclicolre- -m, which caused no
alarm, as the teacher supposed they had been
kept at home. But when the children failed
to retnrn home at the accustomed hour, there
was great alarm. It was sunset whan the
father returned from Ills Colds, and tho night
was intensely dark, with a drenching
ninfall. Taking a lantern to
guido his steps the father pro
ceeded css the way to Vienna. When ho
reached the head of the road ailtshof the
light fei 1 across a palo and livid face. Ho ap
proached and found that it was ono of hia
daughters—lying dead. A low moan fell upon
his cars. Proceeding to the spot whence it
came, he found his other daughter bound and
gagged, and tied to the oak tree. She was
wild with delirium, but enough could bo
gathered to know that a worse crime had pre
ceded the murdor. The girl is still a hopoless
maniac.
The news created intense excitement. Hen
left their fields, vowing that until tho perpe
trator of tho deed was caught, tlioy would not
retnrn to the plow handles. Circunutancos
gathered around a young negro in tho neigh
borhood until they grew into conviction, made
a fact by tho culprit’s confession. Ho w rs
taken to tho spot, hound and gaggcl, and
thrown Into a blazing fire which had been
built on tho scene of tho ciimo. Since that
timo tho spot has been deemed to bo accursed,
A wonderful electric pit, recently discovered
three miles from Sbarou,is ofloc'ing hun
dred of cures from rheumatism. A fanner,
named Hillman, waa prospecting for gold. In
a little bend of Harden’s creek, whore tho
bank ilics abruptly, Hr, nillman observed
some stmngo discoloration of the soil. He be
gan digging, and finally desisted when he
could discover no metaliedeposit.
A negro who was aiding Hillman had long
been afflicted with rheumatism. Ha noticed
that whenever he handled tho oozy clay m
the pit, that the muscles of his hands relaxed,
permitting him to use them with all natural
ease. When Hillman abandoned the pit dis
appointed in his search for gold, his employoo
left it tnrpriicd at his freedom from the rheu
matism of years.
Tbo story soon spread, and pooplo began
nuking Sunday visits to the strango spat.
Ebeumaticsresorted thereto, and began to
confirm the experionco of Hillman's servant.
Hr. J. P. Moore, a well-to-do farmer, who for
years had been nnablo to use his hands, after
burying them twice in the soft mud of the pit
found them fully restored to usefulness. A
well-known white lady from Wat-
ren county, who was badly drawn up,
visited the pit. and walked
away,declaring herself cured. Charles Calla
way, colored, who for ten years walked on
crutrbos, after one visit to the spot, left his
crutches behind him and walked home.
Tlie most wonderful euro related is that of
r colored house servant of General Heard.
This woman was a perfect wreck from
rheumatism. A year ago ehe went to
bed, and since has had to be
waited upon like a child. When tho vlrtuos
of the pit were first mooted, her friends con
cluded to try it. Tho woman was carried on
her led to the spot, where she was rnbbod-
over with the mnd twico. Tho result was
that tbo woman who bail thus boon cxrrio-1
to tho spot took up her bed and walked home.
The spot is in a dense thicket, rendered al
most impenetrable by laurel growth. .Hun
dreds of people arc resorting thither,as a
matter of curiosity. Tbo water flows iu snfil-
ciently to keep tuc clay in a waxy coudition.
By applying this clay to tho parts afflicted, it
wields tonio kind of inlluenco which olf.-rs
relief. Tho only thoory advanced is that tho
mud must bo charged with electricity suffi
cient to affect the cures mentioned.
Haraleon Jenkins, a colored tenant on Hr.
Hcniy Banks's place, near lUgland, carno to
his death in a very strange and tragic man
ner en last Thursday morning. Uo wont
'possum hunting, treed his gauio and feUod the
tree. It was caught in tho limbs of another
which stood near. Ho cut this down also.
Ono ot the trees, in falling, struck him on the
neck, breaking it.
THE PRHSBYTBH1AN SYNODS
“WITH HEADS UNCOVERED."
From tlie Detroit Frte I'ress.
As he took the dispatch and placed it in an
Wide pocket and carefully buttouol his jacket
over it and left the general's tent one might
have thought it an oidor to bo delivered at
the other end of tho camp. There was no
anxiety in his face—nohesitation in hia step —
no dismal picture roao before him to chase the
smile from his lips. Ho was to ride from a
point on the right-hand Mhrch of the Ar
kansas almost due south to fort Lyon—fifty
miles an the crow flies—over tho tevol prairie
—over the ridgo-cut plaino, and a thousand
hostile Indians swarmed over tho country
between.
Night was just falling as the scout rode awa%
aud three of tbe cavalry followed clo'o behind.
He had gone among the men and selected to
please himself Thera wore none who did
not hoar tho scars of an Indian fight—who had
not fceatd tbe warwhoop so oft.-n that it hail
lost its terror. Each man know that ho took
hia life iu his hand, and more. It is asuld'or’a
duty, whether ho fights along tho Itapidan or
tho Arkansas—whether with banners flying
and drums beating, or with tho cries of s.iv-
aj or In his cars—to dio in defonso of his causa.
To dio a swift death b; bullet or arrow had
notorrors. To bolied to tho stake and tortured
to Ve cut with knives—to have burning
a; linters forced into tho flosb—to havo oars
asid nose and fingers sliced off by the sharp
knives—the thought mada thorn cringa as
they redo away into tbo daiknce3 to bo swal
lowed up S3 soon as they had pasted tho sent
inels.
Now, four abreast, haTs pullod down and
reins held tight, they face to tho south and
break into a gallop—not a rnsh which will
wind their horses after tho first ton mites, but
a steady, even gait, which will rod off'milo
after mile and hour after hour without dis-
frets to either man or liorso. Thoro is no
talking. If the scout hears to left or right tho
others follow without quoation. A frightened
antelope springs up and dashes away—a wolf
is almost trodden uador foot—a night-ovl
flaps its wings over thoir heads and utters
cries of warning—but tho four men are as si-
tent as if ther had nover spoken. Durham
after midnight has passed and they are stiff
undiicovrrcd they have stronger hopc3; but
what will daylight bring? Isn’t the deep si-
lonco which clings to them so persistently an
omen of evil? Tho red man sleopa only when
there is no blood to shed—no ono at hand to
.'alia victim to his hatred and cruelty.
An hour after midnight thoro is a halt for
the horses to breathe and tho men to sic down
and stretch thoir stiffened limbs. Kirs are
strained to catch tho slightest sound—eyes
ache as they attempt to piorcotho darkness
which shuts them in, bnt hardly a word te
(poken. Hen who stand in the preaeuco of
‘diatharo busy with their own thoughts. A
half-hour speeds away, and tho ride is re
turned. - Tho scout has no compass to guide
him. Homsy turn to the right or the loft to
avoid an obstruction, but as s-jou as it bus boon
passed tho head of his liorso swings back to the
south again with unerring instinct. By ant
by, as they ride, their eves aoetu to nenatrate
fur ter into tho darkness, tho horses prick up
their cars as if seeing now sights, and a faint
glow appears in tho cast. Daylight is coming.
The darkness breaks and dissolves. The mist
begins to rise like a ragged curtain, and nres-
sently the glow deepens and day has como.
Tho men note it but tboy do not speak. They
may glanoe at each other, but wnat need of
» word? Tho fort is still miles away—tho red
man muy menace thorn even at its gatos.
“Here,” said a grizzly old Indian fightor, as
ho sat his horse and survey cd tho ground, “is
where the red devils swung in bohind ’em,
How many? well, a plump hundred—mobbo
double that. Twenty to ono is big odds,
’spichually when tho horses had boon going
all night. Lot’s Toller on.”
Ho took up tho trail at a steady canter, as*
cendlngand decoonding tho interminable ridges
stretching from east to west. Three miles

STORIES o7 REAL LIFE.
Iknm years ago there lived in Philadel
phia an Englishman named John Story. On
l is liet of intimato friends was a man niutol
Henry Clark Rogers. Rogers war. a bachelor,
but lived in splendid quarters and had an
am) lo fortune. Ho devoted himself to tho
cultivation of art and literature, and was an
exceedingly companionable man. The most
remarkable thing about him was that ho
claimed to be tho nature! son of (tenoral
(Irorgc Washington. Ho said he was boru in
England, and Hurt be hid inherited property
fiom Washington. It is said that Ganorai
Washington never went to Eagland after ho
was twenty-one, and it is not curtain that ho
wentthtrt before that timo. Therefore tho
mother of Rogers, if tbe story be tine, must
have ccdc from Atncrict to Eagland. Hr.
Story and Mr. Rogers were very intimato. and
Mr. Story prepared tho muinscript of a book
betting forth tho claims of Rogers. Both men
are now dead , rs dying iu 1885. Too
manuscript of the book, which was never
published, is >n tbo hands of F. A. Story, of
PMUdrlpliia. son of John Story. Ho refuses
to publish It, however, or to lot it be seen. A
photograph of Rogers shows a wonderful re-
uinhlai-co to the Father of His Country. The
features are said to be Identical.
