were an hour behind the counterfeiters, who had
hastily thrown away a great part of their im
plements and fled. Bomo of their tools were
found and a considerable quantity of different
metals, platinum steel filings, diver leaf and
composition white metal. The counterfeits
an entirely new and dangerous composition,

London, Thursday, Dccomber 23.—The
Times announce* that Lord Randolph
Churchill baa resigned his scat in tho cabinet,
owing to a disagreement with tho admiralty
and war office with reference to increasing tho
expenses of the country in view of tho existing
financial difficulty, and also because he disap*
proved of tho home legislative measures of the
cabinet.
Lord Bondolph Churchill considers that Wil
liam Henry Smith and Lord George Hamilton
prepared exorbitant estimates for the army and
navy departments respectively, which axe un
called for by the state of foreign aflhini. Lord
Salisbury supported Smith and Lord George
Hamilton. Lord Bandolph further considers
that legislative measures for Great Britain pro
posed for the next session of parliament are in
adequate.
London, December 2.3.—The resignation o
Lord Bandolph Churchill from tho cabinet has
caused a sensation. Desires to increase the
expenses of tho admiralty and war office, to
which Lord Bandolph was opposed, indicates,
it is believed, that the government are of the
opinion that an European war is imminent and
that extra naval and military preparations on
the part of England are required to-mako her
influence felt on the continent.

London, December 22.—An interchange of
views between Mr. Gladstone and his colleagues
of the last liberal cabinet on tho attitude to be
adopted by the liberal party at the opening of
parliament, has resulted in an agreement to
support tho government in all legal efforts to
suppress tbe anti-rent campaign, but to urge
the immediate enforcement or some form of
Mr. Parnell's bill for the suspension of evic
tions. The Gladstone circle is irritated over
the action of Dillon and O'Brien, and anti-rent
leaders have been warned that there is no
chance that the co-oporation of Mr. Gladstone
will continue unless thoy submit to Mr. Par*
ndl, who, desirous of a common policy with
Mr. Gladstone, is suspected of aiming to sap*
press the plan of campaign.
Notwithstanding Mr. Parnell’s displeasure,
Dillon, O'firicn and Itealy continue their anti
rent tactics. ■Bn
