WHITE CAPS CONVICTED
X HIGHZY BBNBA.TIOJf.AI, TVBN IN
THE CARROLL CASES.
The Fall Story of the Crime, for Which
These Men Stand Convicted—How Wit
nesses Were Terrorized. Etc.
————— •
Carrollton, Ga., April 17. —(Special.)—
The whte caps cases being tried in Car
roll superior court had quite a sudden ter
mination late this evening.
Dick Byrd was put on trial this morning.
The state weaved a web around poor Dick
who is a young man, and showed
his guilt beyond doubt, and not only his
guilt, but tlie guilt of a number of those
indicted by the grand jury.
Lum Britt swore positively to Byrd and
others; mid Wiley Duke, Fred Duke mid
Willie Chambers, who were jointly in
dicted for the riot, were pnt on the stand
and gave the whole thing away. The evi
dence was so overwhelming that the law
yers for the defense had all the prisoners
brought in court and submitted the case
to the jury without argument.
The jury retired and in ten minutes
brought, in a verdict of guilty’ in the case
of Jesse Brooks, Sr., wlio is a man lif
ty-two years old and a deacon in the Bap
tist church.
Jesse Brooks, Jr., Willis C. Brooks, Bob
Ayers, .John .1. I’ollard, Thomas Roach,
John Flemmons, Richard Byrd. Green Sim
kins and John Dukes. The bills against
Wiley Dukes, Fred and Will Chambers
were nolle pressed. The last three were
boys who turned states evidence. Sentence
hits not been passed on the cases yet. but
will probably be passed some time this
week. This* makes eleven convictions to
date and others will follow. There are
ten more true bills against all parties.
History <>i the Cane.
Your readers remember that on the night
of the 22d of March, an outrage was com
mitted on the person of Mrs. S. J. Bow
en and Sam Bowen, Lum Britt,
W. J. Britt, who is now eigh
ty vears old. Frank Fuson, and three
o’s his children. Mrs. Mary B. Wiiite, and
two of her children were whipped by a
crowd of men, some of whom were masked
mid others had blacking on their laces.
They were whipped by strong men. while
others held pistols in their faces with or
ders not. to move or speak or they would be
killed. Sonic of the whipjied parties were
carried to the woods and their arms drawn
around trees and then whipped until they
could not walk.
It is thought that the whipping grew out
of a lawsuit between .1. 11. L. Beniord and
Mrs. Mary E. White, but some say the
wliipping was on account of revenue busi
ness. Il seems that ,1. 11. L. Benford
loaned John White, the husband of Mrs.
Alary E. White. .fltM), and he gave a deed
to fifty acres of land to Benford to make
him secure. When the money- became due
old man White had removed to Haralson
county, but his wife still lives on the land,
and she refused to give it up. Armed with
what was thought to be legal papers, Henry
Benford, I'riee Benford, a bailiff and others
threw Airs. ‘White out of her house, and an
attempt was made to burn the house.
Henry Benford is indieted for this crime.
Slimy lawsuits, both civil mid criminal, were
the result, till at length Mrs. White was
thrown out of possession of the house, and
Henry Benford, Mr. ,1. 11. !.. Benford's
son, moved into it. Mrs. ‘White sued out
a writ of possession for the land, mid it
was this case that was to have been tried
at New Mexico district the day after the
wliipping.
While the ■whipping was going on orders
were given to all that if they appeared at
the courtground next day they- would be
visited the night succeeding mid would be
killed. Mrs. White was made to promise
that she would leave the state at once or
she -would have been killed on the spot.
The white caps of the New Mexico district
will not. down. Fire was set toThim Bow
en's house Saturday night in several places,
and it was burned up. Bowen was one of
the parties whipped on the 23d of March,
and is an important, witness in the eases
now on trial in Carroll superior court.
Everything Bowen owned in the world was
burned up in his humble cottage.
(TTheers are on track of the parties who
burned Bowen’s house.
Gentry GuiVv.
Carrollton, Ga., April 21. —(Special.)—
Guilty of horse stealing is what twelve
intelligent men of Carroll county say of
George Gentry. A verdice was made at
precisely- 10 o'clock this morning and the
jury was out only ten minutes.
The story of his career is familiar to
the readers of The Constitution. The
crime for which George was today con
victed was committed in March. 1592.
The tine horse of .1. A. Rhudy was taken
from his stable and George Gentry was ar
rested with the horse in his possession.
Right after this Carrollton had an incen
diary tire, which lias been laid to the
Gentry gang.
Rube Burrows nor John A. Murrell nev
er made such a reputation for outlawry
as these boys have in the same length of
time. It has been said they belonged to a
regular band of horse thieves who operated
in north and west. Georgia, north Alabama
and southern Tennessee, mid that this band
stole no less than one hundred horses in the
short space of eighteen months. It has
been said that there is a certain place in
a deep wood near Buchanan that was a
rendezvous for the gang and thatmany signs
were seen, where hundreds of horses were
tethered to the bushes in this lonely spot .
George Gentry will be sentenced to the
chaingang b.v Judge Harris this week.

THE WEEKLY CONSTITUTION: ATLANTA, GA., TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 1893.
was made yesterday morning by Miles
Brockens, a burly negro about twenty
five years old, to outrage the little ten
year-old daughter of Mr. J. N. Morris, a
school teacher who lives in Fair Play dis
trict in the southern part of Douglas.
The child’s mother had sent her to a
spring some distance after a bucket of
water, and it was on her return that she
was confronted by this demon, conducting
himself in a most disgraceful and obscene
manner. Her sefeams frightened the in
famous fiend and be lied. The child tells
a most dreadful story of his propositions to
her and her younger sister.
Mr. Morris at once came to town and
had a warrant issued against the scoundrel,
charging him with the offense of assault
with criminal intent which was placed in
the hands of our efficient sheriff, Fred
Aderhold, who now has him securely con
fined behind tho bars.
The Beussees Indicted.
Athens, Ga., April 20.—(Special.)—The
grand jury today- at noon concluded its in
vestigation in the case of Allie Beusse,
Henry Beusse and AV. P. Briggs, charge 1
with the murder of Conductor William II
Cadle.
The grand jury- returned true bills against
both of the Beusse boys and Briggs for
murder. The indictment states that Allie
Beusse assaulted the deceased, Conductor
Cadle, with brass and iron knueks and other
deadly weapons, and inflicted mortal
wounds therewith.
“ BulGHT’s’ DISEASE,"
This Droad Disease is Due to Catarrh of
the Kidneys.
SYMPTOMS.
Pain in the back ami loins, restlessness,
flashes of heat, disturbance of the stomach,
loss of appetite ami hectic fever are the
most piTnniiienf. symptoms in the first
stage of Bright's disease. In the later
stages of the disease there is pnfliness un
der the eyes, swelling of the feet, bloody
urine, dropsy, convulsions and great weak
ness.
At the appearance of the first symptom
l’e-ru-an should be taken in tablespoonfui
(loses six times each day; or, if more, con
venient, twin (tablespoonfills three times
each day before each meal. This remedy
strikes at. once at the very root of
disease. It at. om-e relieves the congested
kidneys of their stagnant blood, prevent
ing the escape of serum from the blood.
Pe-ru-mi stimulates the kidneys to excrete
from the blood the accumulating poison,
and thus prevents the convulsions which
are sure to follow if the poisons are al
lowed to remain. It gives great vigor to
the heart’s action and digestive system,
both of which are apt to fail rapidly in
this disease. Pe-ru-na is just as reliable
in eases of chronic “Bright’s disease"
as in the acute. No matter how long it has
run, or to what extremity the patient may
be reduced, there is always hope in Pe-ru
na .
Every one should have a copy of The
Family Physician No. 2, a complete treat

especially for family use. Sent free to

SPENT A FORTUNE
In Fast Elviug ami Wound Up by Commit
ting Suicide.
Louisville, Ky., April IS. —The mystery,
attending the disappearance of Charles
Ingersofi Maury’ from this city- has at last
been solved. Last night the body of a man
was found floating in the river, near Au
rora, Ind., which was" thought to be that
of young Maury. His cousin, Mr. Ed
ward Berkley, Jr., of this city, received a
telegram to that effect and left on the
2:39 o'clock train for Aurora. Shortly be
fore noon today Mrs. Berkley- received a
telegram from her husband, which said
he had identified the remains as those of
young Maury.
Charles Ingersoll Maur.v came to Louis
ville with his cousin, who came here to
take charge of the stale insurance office of
the Mutual Life Insurance Company, of
New York. Maury’s home is in Phila
delphia, where his parents are regarded as
the best. His father was one of the head
ing physicians of that place. His mother
was a daughter of the late millionaire,
Charles Ingersoll, for whom young Maury
was named. Maury was twenty-four years
old.
From the time Manty first disappeared
it was thought that he had taken his life
out of sheer remorse. He had spent a
fortune in fast living, but there was left
an estate worth $50,000, which yielded
him a yearly income of $2,200. He had a
mania for gambling and on one occasion
he made a partnership play with a friend in
which $1,150 was lost at the faro banks.
The friend in question put up the money,
and when they came to_settle Maury gave
him a cheek on a bank in St. Louis. The
check was returned unpaid. Maury brood
ed over tlie shame that he thought his
action had brought upon him as soon as
he realized what he had done and became
so wretched that he left Louisville on
Sunday nignt, April 2d, for Cincinnati, from
which place he disappeared April 7th.

of fellow, was agreeable, mid palmed him

qutinlcd with an estimable widow of this
city, by the name of Airs. Nannie Bohan
non. He soon captivated her, and they
were married. They lived together, seem
ingly happy for about three months, when
Bowman suddenly turned up missing—he
had skipped for parts unknown, leaving his
newly wedded bride without a word. His
wife has anxiously watched for some word
from him, but never a line has she reeeiy
<<l from him. She wrote to those he claim
ed to know before he came here and her
queries have elicited a reply from one J.
AV. Freeman, of Pikeville, Tenn., whii-h
letter is very sensational in its nature.
Freeman s wife is a sister of Bowman's
first wife, who Ims been dead some years.
Fnviniin says Bowman is a thoroughly
bad egg, and that lie. Freeman, is taking
care of Bowman's children by his first
wife. He says Bow num now has three
living wives, one in Dayton, Tenn.; one in
Fort Payne. Ala., and the Dalton lady.
Freeman says Bowman is ,-i full-fledged
bigamist, never having been divorced from
either of the former wives. The news is a
groat blow to his Dalton wife, and her
friends propose looking into the matter,
and having Bowman vigorously prosecuted
as soon as hi.; w hereabouts are discovered.
But, according to Freeman, he is a slick
rascal and will be bard to catch.
