California Is eager to visit (he south,

fruit that are raised in that ; t ite, and
all of the mining interests will be fully

the meeting that was h* Id yesterday in San

Maryland wants representation, and
when tho gates of the exposition open
a large exhibit of the manufacturing in

Baltimore will have her varied business
Interests on exhibition and will contribute
a large display. The citizens of that city
are thoroughly in sympathy with the ex
position, and they will be here in force
this fall. Baltimore, in her rapid strides,
has not overlooked the fact that cen
tennials and expositions that are held in
cities are om- of the great sources from
which rnatvrial success will spring, and
consequently Baltimore Is one us the best
exposition pities in the country. She will
have a tremendous exhibit at the exposi

but recently appointed a board of commis
sioners to the exposition to represent that
state.

HENRY PARKER, Bloodworth, Ga.
The medal was secured for the contest

The offer of the medals was made in

upon these terms:

For a club or flft*« n subscribers to The

The Constitution has long been engaged
in building up our country and ha* tak*-n
the lead in many of the great improvements
which have been of permanent benefit to
our people. We realize that no more potent
element for the advancement of our wel
fare exists than that which resides in the
schools of the land. W* believe that no
gr*at*r auxiliary to education can b*
found, to throw in the sidelights of today
among school studies, than a clean* live,
practical m wspai»er.
This is our plan: We want to give on*,
two or three medals in each e'-hool for
prize declamation, to be awarded to the
scholars after a public contest which shall
be duly announced and understood
throughout the community. The terms of

will claim medals in the fall to use in their

Tho* conversation turned upon the fatal

THE DELAYED REPRIEVE. I
The governor’s private secretary was not »
an early riser, and on this hot July morn |
ing, with nothing particular to do, he turn- |
ed over at 5 o’clock for a good long nap.
But he was vaguely conscious that some- I
body was banging at his door, ami in a few
moment* the knocks were *o loud that he
could no lunger pretend that he did not hear
them.
The young man left his bed languidly
and in the worst possible temper.
Seizing a cane he went to the door, and
the determined look on his face boded no
good to the person outside.
Suddenly pulling the door open, the secre
tary brought the stick down with a whack
upon th«» disturber of his rest.
“The devil’” shouted the victim of the at
tack. “What do you mean, sir?”
“Beg pardon, gov* rnor,” repih d the other,
“but I thought It was my negro Tom knock
ing in* up at this uncun. ”ionable hour, i
had no idea that it was anybo*ly else. < om»
right in and tell me what I can do for you ”
The governor entered the room, muttering
something about a good joke, but his coun
tenance indicated great nervousness am:
anxiety.
The secretary renewed hte apology, but
his chief waved him aside.
“It’s ail right.” ©e raid; “jump into your
i clothes in a hurry. I want you to take a
long rid”.**
“What’s ur?” a c ked the se<*r*tary. hastily
getting into his garments.
“Just this.” said the governor. “That
Mexi nn girl charged with poisoning her
lover hangs at Tinta at 11 o clock today.
Here Is a reprieve. Take It and ride like a
whirlwind to the place. You can r ach it by

sheriff at once and then return. Say noth
Ing to anybody else. No one dreams of the
reprieve. **
••But, governor, may I ask—?”
“Time presses,*’ was the answer. Your
horse awaits you at the door. Say nothing
to a soul and lose not a moment!"
The secretary tock the pap- r an 1 carefully
thrust it into an i:> : !-■ p - ket.
