along the rugged roads, had tn It much of
pathos, perhaps tragedy.
It was 11 o'clock before the last of those
able to keep their feet bad been safely dis
embarked. Most of these suffer from rifle
wounds in the arms or hands. About
thirty-five others, whose Injuries are In
tho lower parts of their bodies, had to be
carried off on stretchers. Fifteen who are
suffering from a mild attack of measles
were left on board the steamer and will
probably be taken back to Cuba when the
Iroquois returiw. The debarkation was not
eomoleted.
All arft loud in their praise of the fighting
qualities of the Spanish forces, but say
their losses must be numerous. Os our own
dead and wounded extravagant figures are
given by many, but wiser heads place the
figures for the two days’ fighting at be
tween 1.200 and 1,500, perhaps 300 ot whom
were killed.
At the hospitals suits of pajamas were
served out to the soldiers and they lounge
about the rooms in the airy garments read
ing tho latest newspaper tales of their
prowess ami challing each other thereon.
Inde-d. many of those whoso wounds are
trifling hive been unconcernedly walking
about th" streets and renewing friendships
at the hotels with no other apparel than
these scanty sleeping garments.
