HOKE SMITH FAR
AHEAD IN EIGHTH
DISTRICT POLL
ATHENS, Ga., April 10.—The
friends of Senator Hoke Smith, can
didate for the presidential nomina
tion, will make a determined effort
to induce him to speak in Athens
during the coming week. Senator
Smith has stated that he probably
would speak in Athens and as this
city is the acknowledged center of
this section of the state it is thought
that the senior senator will consent
to outline his views concerning the
issues involved in the presidential
election.
According to a straw vote now be
ing conducted by The Athens Herald.
Hoke Smith will carry the Eighth
congressional district as he has twice
the votes of his nearest competitor.
Tom Watson. From all indications
the senior senator will receive a ma
jority vote and win in the Eighth.
The people of this section, although
quite a few of them differ with him
on the League of Nations question,
seem to consider Senator Smith the
logical candidate for the presidency
in view of his work, making laws of
the various measures advocated by
him to better the agricultural and
educational interests of the country,
especially the Smith-Towner bill.

JUDGE HAMMOND
STRONGLY FAVORS
SENATOR SMITH
Judge W. R. Hammond, one of the
most distinguished lawyers in Geor
gia, a leader in many humanitarian
movements, • and a citizen whose
views always command state-wide
respect and interest, has sent The
Journal the following card, approv
ing the candidacy of Senator Hoke
Smith for president:
Editor The Journal: I see no rea
son why Senator Hoke Smith may
not aspire to the presidency. Nor is
there any sound reason whv the bona
sides of his candidacy should be call
ed in question. He has tilled the of
fice of governor ably and satisfac
torily, and now occupies the place
of United States senator, which many
consider the highest office within the
gift of the people of Georgia. His
ability is unquestioned and his long
experience in national affairs and his
practical good sense make him a suit
able man for this high office. I tai>e
pleasure in stating it as my opinion
that the people of Georgia ought to
vote for him at the coming primary.
This is a voluntary suggestion on
my part and made without his
knowledge. ’
“I was treated by doctors and tried
all kinds of medicines, but nothing
seemed to help me until a friend of
mine told me about the wonderful
good Pomeroy’s Puratone did her.
She urged me to try Puratone and
I purchased a bottle. It helped me
from the very start. I took the
medicine regularly, and in a few
days my appetite had improved won
derfully. and I began to eat things
I hadn’t touched before in a long
time, and nothing I ate disagreed
with me. Now, after taking three
bottles I am like a different woman.
I have a good appetite, eat what I
want and have no bad after ef
fects. My strength has increased so
wonderfully that I am now able to
do all my own housework. Isn’t
that w’onderful? I have gained about
ten pounds in weight. lam not ner
vous, like I was, sleep better, eat
better and feel better than I have
in years. I don’t have those awful
pains any more. In fact, I’m not
like the same person now. I shall
keep a bottle of Puratone in my
house as long as I live and will
never miss the opportunity to praise
it. I will never be able to thank
Mr. Pomeroy enough for what his
Puratone did for me.”

PALMER WON’T
GET DELEGATES
OF OWN STATE
That Attorney General Palmer will
not get the Pennsylvania delegation,
that on the contrary it will be con
trolled by his Democratic oppon
ents, and' that Palmer will not even
have the delegates from his own
home county, was the information re
ceived from The Philadelphia Record
and Judge Eugence C. Bonniwell, of
Philadelphia, Saturday, by Mayor
Murray Stewart, of Savannah. This
information was transmitted to Sen
ator Smith in the following tele
gram from Mayor Stewart’s secre
tary and made public by the sena
tor’s headquarters in the Piedmont
hotel:
Savannar. Ga., April 10, 1920.
Hon. Hoke Smith,
Atlanta, Ga.
The editorial department of the
Philadelphia Record, the leading
Democratic newspaper of Pennsyl
vania, in a telephone message, to
Mayor Stewart this afternoon stated
most positively that the published
report in Georgia that Palmer would
have an instructed delegation for
him from Pennsylvania is entirely
untrue, that there is an opposition
Democratic ticket in every county,
vigorously fighting the Palmer fac
tion. Pennsylvania will send an un
instructed delegation, defeating the
Palmer tisket. At five o’clock this
afternoon Mayor Stewart received
the following telegram from Judge
Bonniwell, who was the Democratic
candidate for governor of Pennsyl
vania two years ago and received
nearly three hundred thousand
votes in spite of the fact that the
Palmer faction, which was defeat
ed in the primary, largely lay down
Judge Bonniwell’s telegram fol
lows:
“Philadelphia. Pa., April 10.—Hon.
Murray Stewart, Savannah, Ga.; Ab
solutely no foundation for Palmer’s
statement. I have full anti-Palmer
ticket for delegates, alternates and
state-wide officers in the field and
indications are we will positively
control delegation from Pennsyl
vania. Palmer will not elect ever
delegation from his own (Monroe,'
county.

Claud Kitchin Is
Recovering From
Paralytic Stroke
WASHINGTON, April 10.—Claude
Kitchin, Democratic leader in con
gress, who suffered a stroke of par
alysis yesterday, was much improved
this morning, after a very good
night, according to his physician, Dr.
L. J. Battle.
Dr. Battle said Mr. Kitchin’s ar
ticulation had cleared, and indica
tions were that the blood clot on
the brain which caused the stroke
had not enlarged and would soon
be carried away altogether.
The acute symptoms of such a
stroke, Dr. Battle said, last from
ten days to two weeks, and until
this period passes no prediction can
be made as to when Mr. Kitchin will
be able to resume his duties.
Harris Asks Benson »
To Put Georgian on
Ports C ommittee
(The Atlanta Journal News Bureau)
623 Riggs Building.
BY THEODORE TILLER
WASHINGTON, April 10—Admiral
Benson, a native Georgian, who is
now chairman of the shipping board,
has been requested by Senator Harris
to give wider recognition to the
southern section in the appointment
of a conference committee of busi
ness men to discuss the future of
the American merchant marine.
Senator Harris informed Admiral
Benson that the committee as pro
posed does not contain the name of
any Georgian, although that state
has two of the largest ports on the
Atlantic, Savannah and Brunswick.
Only one man from the southeast
has been appointed on the committee
as yet, and Senator Harris hopes
that further recognition will be giv
en, because of the diversified inter
ests in relation to commerce and
shipipng.
Land Around Natchez
Is Under Water
NEW ORLEANS, La., April 10.—
While flood stage forecasts for the
Mississippi river were changed to
day showing the crest will be de
layed in reaching here owing to the
recent heavy rains in the lower val
ley, word was received tonight from
Natchez that the water had reached
a stage of 47.8 feet, two and eight
tenth feet above flood stage, that
many cultivated fields were flooded
from back waters, live stock was
rushed to higher points and the
government fleet augmented and pre
pared for any emergency.
On the Mississippi side above
JNatchez many acres are flooded ow
ing to the fact that there are no
protection levees, while on the Louis
iana side there is a good system ot
levees. Plants, anticipating the rise
did not plant any crops this spring
and the damage is, therefore, at a
minimum.

SAYS FARMERS
WILL VOTE FOR
SENATOR SMITH
Editor The Journal: I, as a farm
er, have been in respectful, and yet
anxious, touch with Senator Hoke
Smith since he has been in the sen
ate, and I cannot see how any farm
er can fail to support him. He has
done more in helping us get a fair
price for our cotton than any man
in America. Every man, woman and
child, in a sense, whose money comes
through the cotton crop, has been pe
cuniarily dided. He stands, like the
patriots of pioneer days, for American
liberty; and he justly thinks we have
the exclusive right to say when we
shall go to war and not be dominated
by England. Furthermore, he is
abundantly justified in standing for
wholesome reservations concerning
the League of Nations.
He does not believe in embarking
on board of a ship laden with our
country's destiny and allowing it to
be steered by the coattails of any
single individual.
“Whom the gods would destroy
they first make mad,” may be of
pagan origin and interpretation, but
Mr. Palmer will find its principles
are of universal application, hence
he will not be an exception to the
rule. J. N. WALL.

Body of Young Girl
Is Found in River
Near Heardmont, Ga.
ELBERTON, Ga., April 10—A
body of a girl was found in the Sa
vannah river yesterday afternoon
near Heardmont, Ga., six miles be
low Harper’s Ferry, where ten per
sons were drowned Sunday after
noon, this being the first of the
bodies found. It was caught upon
some drift wood. From all evidence
obtainable the body is that of Miss
Lucy Bradshaw.
A purse of SI,OOO has been made
up by citizens of South Carolina and
Georgia with which to offer a re
ward for the recovery of the bodies
cf the victims of the drowning.
Both banks of the river are lined
each day by searching parties, and
six motor boats and batteaux are
dragging the stream at the place of
the drowning. Expert divers from
Norfolk and Charleston have arrived
on the scene and will begin work im
mediately. Rains have set in again
and this will hamper the work con
siderably. Large crowds of people
are to be seen on the river banks
daily, and on yesterday it was esti
mated that from 800 to 1,000 people
were on the banks on both the South
Carolina and Georgia sides.

THIS SPRING?
“Spring Fever” Is Natural,
But Not Necessary—lt’s
Due to Sluggish Blood
KEEP FEELING YOUR HAP
PIEST
Purify and Tone Up Your
Blood With That Famous
Tonic, Pepto-Mangan
Do you seem unable to do any
work, to concentrate, to take anx 5-
terest in things, during the wonder
ful Spring days? Do you feel just
useless and “no account”?
Nothing is really the matter, ex
cept that, as happens every Spring,
your blood is clogged—it is sluggish
with poisons from its long Winter
fight.
In time, your blood, will probably
adjust itself. But meanwhile you
fret and worry, feel unhappy—and
accomplish nothing. Why do it, when
it is easy to clear up your blood by
taking Pepto-Mangan for a while?
For thirty years, doctors have been
recommending this effective and
agreeable tonic to purify and build
up the blood of rundown, listless
people.
Feel your best. Have a fine color,
and spring in your step. Be vigor
ous, happy, red-blooded. Get a bot
tle of Pepto-Mangan today. The
nearest druggist has it, and in either
liquid or tablet form, just as you
prefer. There’s no difference in me
dicinal value.
But be sure you get the genuine
Gude’s Pepto-Mangan. Ask for it by
that name—“Gude’s Pepto-Mangan,”
ana be sure the full name is on the
package.—(Advt.)

1 was badly ruptured while lifting a trunk<M
several years ago. Doctors said my only 1
