CAMPAIGN MOVE OF PRESIDENT IS KEENLY AWAITED BY Z. C, MASTIN. WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 —President Wilson’s active participation In the Democratic campaign is awaited with keen interest by politicians, curious to know what form his campaigning will take. Announcement by Chairman white of the Democratic national comm'.’- tee that the president will be invited to aid came on the heels of the re itera ed statements by persons close to Mr. Wilson that he was wil Ing actively to campaign for Cox and Roosevelt but that he had not been asked to. and a further statement by E. H. Moore, cox’s pre-convention manager, that Mr. W’ilson hud not been asked to help because of his health. At the White House today it was stated nothing was known of the probable form of the presidents campaign activities. Mr. Whites announcement, however, caused g at ification as it was expected to quiet repo.ts credited to Republican sources, that the president was not enthusiastic about the Cox cand dacy and other reports that Cox had a~ked Mr. Wilson to “keep out.” It was expected here that Mr. Wil son’s work will be confined to writ ing letters and statements. Presi dent Roosevelt, when he wished to get his views before the public, fre quently had a friend write him a let ter to which he would reply at length and make the correspondence "üblic. Speech making by Mr. Wil son is not contemplated. The ch’ef value of the president s participation. Democrats here said, will be psychological. It will P p oy® to Democrats that the party leade-s are harmonious and will remove doubts which are eported to have been troubling some W I l son Q P crats” to an extent that vv as held likely to impair their usefulness. They sawed the bars of a steel door to get into a boiler room; then cut a hole .about four feet in diam eter, through a three-foot wall. This gave them access to the main office of the store, where they found a 400-pound safe, containing be tween $1,500 and $2,500, the Liggett officials say. Realizing that to open the safe there would take time and might at tract attention, the burglars remov ed it through the same hole which had afforded them an entrance, car ried it to a rear lot and there loaded it on an automobile. Trade Fairly Active, Weekly Report of v Bradstreet’s Shows Following is the weekly report of J. E. C. Redder, Bradstreet’s super intendent for the Atlanta division, on business conditions In the south east: “Wholesale trade In practically al; lines Is only fairly active. A slight improvement, however, is evident. Retail trade has shown some im provement. Men’s and women’s ready-to-wear lines continue in only fair demand. Fall and winter styles suggest conservatism. Fancy ap parel apears least in demand. Man ufacturing is quiet. Collections con tinue slow, yet they are some bet ter than last week. The weather for the past week has been good for harvesting crops. Potatoes are good as are also other food commodi ties.” They then proceeded to an isolat ed district of Astoria, near Flushing avenue and Old Bowery Day Road, Where they cracked the safe at then leisure, removed the negotiable cur rency and went on their way. Henry Damm, of 543 Tenth ave nue. Long Island City, out for a stroll through wooded country, came upon the wrecked safe. Beside it was a sledge hammer and a jimmy. The inner and outer door of the safe lay open. Papers were scat tered about, but there was no loose change in evidence. There were au tomobile tracks leading from the road to the spot where the safe was found. Police carted the empty safe to the Astoria station. Dry Raiders Nab Two City Mayors CHICAGO. —The villages of Chicago Ridge and Lemont, Hl., are some distance apart geogra phically, but they are comrades in misfortune. IN DRY MOVEMENT WASHINGTON, Sept. 16.—An army of 5,000,000 is now fighting to make the entire world dry. Dr. Rob ert Hercod said today upon his ar rival here from Switzerland to at tend the fifteenth international con gress against alcoholism which con venes Monday. Alcoholic drinking will be abol ished in every country in fifty years, according to Dr. Hercod, permanent chairman of the world dry forces. One of the Scandinavian countries will be the next nation to follow the United States in voting for full pro hibition,’” said Dr. Hercod. “France probably will be the last country to go dry. “Europe is beginning to take seri ously full prohibition in the United States.” A smiilar view was expressed by Dr. C. W. Saleeby, scientist here from England to address the confer- “England will be dry within ten years,” said Dr. Saleeby. "It will be a result of economic changes. Eng lishmen visiting the United States carry back stories of the workings of prohibition. Lord Leverhulme, shrewd business man, visited the United States a wet and returned a dry. “I toured America soon after pro hibition began without seeing an in toxicated man,” said Dr. Hercod. ‘People are better off in a prohibi tion country. Europe is beginning to realize that. The whole world now is looking to the United States as an experiment station. “At first Europe was surprised at the news that America was dry. Then came amusement. Newspapers carried hundreds of stories ridicul ing America. Now Europe is begin ning to see dry America in the true economic light. Europe is becoming impressed. The liquor interests are beginning to fight. “Prohibition is gradually sweeping over the entire world, as a result of the demand of increased economic efficiency and conditions which force regulations of the liquor traffic. There are several well-defined steps in the battle for full prohibition. “The first step is regulation by government authority. This restricts drinking hours. It now is being practiced in England. The next step is prohibition against the use of one especially harmful liquor. France, Italy and Switzerland now have this form of prohibition. Drinking of ab sinthe is prohibited in these three countries. Another stage is the pro hibition of the sale of liquor and spirits to be consumed at the place of sale. Belgium now has this form. In that country spirits may be con sumed only in the home. “Partial prohibition or complete abolition of the manufacture, sale and consumption of all spirits is still another stage. Norway now permits the drinking only of light wine and beer. Sale Os strong beverages is ab solutely forbidden. Scotland is now entering the local option stage and elections under this law are to be held in a few weeks. “Germany is now partially dry. Because of the scarcity of grain the government limited the amount that could be used in manufacture of beer. Germany’s beer now is wa tery, barely stronger than the soft drinks sold in the United States. “In a recent straw vote In 100 cit ies and villages of Switzeralnd, a majority of 4 to 1 was rolled up against the . sale of strong liquors..” Live Stock Market Is Planned for California COLUMBUS, Ga., Sept. 16.—Mayor Couch, of Columbus, is enthusiastic over prospects of establishing a big live stock market in this city, and he say the proposed $500,000 stock company is bound to succeed. The enaerprise is to be nown as “The Columbus Wholesale Live Stock Market,” and a number of the monyed people of the community are back of the concern. John A Carlton, of Moultrie, one of the best known live stock men in the state is co-operating with Mayor Couch, and it is stated that wide-spread in terest is being manifested in the proposition. Mayor Couch points out the fact that Atlanta is perhaps the rearest live stock market to this section, and he says there is no setter place under the sun for live stock than right here in Muscogee county. “A market is all that is neded here to make Columbus a great live stock center,” said the mayor, "and we are going to have it.” Dalton Not Satisfied With Census Figures DALTON, Ga., Sept. 16.—Although the census bureau has denied Dal ton’s request for a correction in the census figures, the Dalton Shrine club Is still busy in an effort to get accurate figures for this city. That there is something radically wrong is Indicated by the census bu reau’s report to the local Shrine club which took a volunteer census on Dalton last May. The report from the census bureau states that in checking the names sent in by the Shriners, the names of 1,410 were not found on the government’s lists, and as this is over 25 per cent of the papulation figures announced by the government in the preliminary census figures, local people think some further investigation should be made. The report states further that the government lists contained the names of 1,098 whom the Shriners didn’t list- The report holds that it was a “turn-over” in population, and the difference in the figures is not enough to warrant an investigation that would take much time and la bor. Bainbridge People Ask Census Recount BAINBRIDGE, Ga., Sept. 16—The Bainbridge Board of Trade, at the request of the people has taken up with the director of the census at Washington, the matter of having the census at Bainbridge re-taken. The people were much disappointed at the official report issued at Wash ington, but as Bainbridge’s popula tion was announced early, there were no neighboring sister cities to com pare with, but since all of S uth Georgia and North Florida have been announced, the local people are cer tain that some irregularity exists somewhere, hence the movement to ecure a recount. Ten Air Carriers of Mail Are Victims of Fatal Accidents WASHINGTON, Sept. 15.—The number of flyers killed in the air mail service was brought to a total of ten when a plane fell at Pember ville, Ohio, killing two, is was said at the postoffice department today. The postal authorities today were making a second investigation of the all-metal plane which figured in yes terday’s Ohio accident as well as the one at Morristown, N. J., in which two men were killed. The all-metal type plane was spon sored by Alfred W. Lawson, who shortly before the accident yester day was awarded a contract to car ry the air mail over three routes which connect New York to St. Louis and New York to Atlanta, making stops at Pittsburg, Harris burg, Ft. Wayne, Raleigh, N. C., Co lumbia. S. C., and Washington. Robbers Take $30,000 In Jewels From Home WESTERLY, R. 1., Sept. 15. Burglars robbed the summer home of Mrs. George X. VALENTINE MOTT PIERCE ids'll Your doctor will tell you that anything from a head ache or a common cold to grippe or a serious illness may result from allowing food to ferment.in\the in testines. Don’t give the body a chance to absorb the poisons. Remove the toxins from the system and give the tissues of the body aid to resist disease by taking an occasional laxative such as castor oil, or a tiny pill made up of May-apple, aloin, jalap, and sold by most drug gists as Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets. The kidneys and bladder suffer from the wear and tear, and we get chronic inflammations sometimes indi cated by backache, painful voiding of water—dull, heavy feelings. Perhaps the uric acid is stored up in the system in excessive amount, and consequently when the urate salts are deposited in muscles and joints one suffers from lumbago (pain in back), rheumatic pains, gout, etc. Nothing will act so nicely as Anuric (anti-uric acid), a recent discovery of Doctor Pierce’s which can be had at all drug stores. Anuric aids in cleaning the bladder and kidneys—consequently those suffering from rheumatism, lumbago and gout are benefited and the body is put in a cleaner, healthier state.—(Advt.) Look Out for Rheumatism As Winter Approaches So many eases of Rheumatism come from a tiny disease germ that infests the blood, that physicians are beginning to realize that this source of the disease is becoming quite prevalent. One remedy that has given splen did results in the treatment of Rheumatism is S.S.S,, the fine old Twins Marry Twins At This Wedding ST. Removes Safety Pins From Girl’s Throat After Three Years NEW YORK. —Three safety pins, one of them opened, were removed recently from the throat of Clara Koucher, four years old, cf No. 123 Seventh street, by Dr. Max Schroed er of No. 416 Sixth street. Accord ing to Mrs. Anna Kucher, mother of the child, the pins were swallowed by the child two years ago. At that time, Mrs. Kucher says, Clara was taken to Bellevue hospital, where an X-ray examination failed to locate the pins. Believing they had been coughed out, the incident was for gotten until Dr. Schroeder examined Clara and located the pins. Clara . had been suffering from fever for several days and Mrs. Kucher took her to Dr. Schrpder On examining her throat he saw soemthing shiny, and then learned of the pin swallowing.
