125 COUNTIES FOR
HARDWICK, HIS
MANAGER SAYS
Predicting that Thomas W. Hard
wick will carry 125 counties in the
primary of October 6, Judge G. H.
Howard, manager of Mr. Hardwick’s
campaign for governor, Saturday is
sued the following statement:
‘‘Our friends throughout Georgia
have understood, all along, that our
principal difficulty would be to get
the polls opened at every precinct
in every county under the Imperfect
provisions of the primary law under
which no provision was made for
the expense, and that another diffi
culty would be to get the voters to
the polls on October 6.
“Fortunately for us, our friends
in each county began early the work
of the second campaign, with the re
sult that there is more interest
among Senator Hardwick’s friends in
the second primary than in the first,
as is evidenced by the fact that our
mail has been ten times as heavy
as during the first primary. In
most of the counties our friends
have volunteered to help hold the
election, free of charge, and we will
not have to pay the expense in many
counties, and only in those where
we could get little'or no co-dperation
from the chairmen and members of
local executive committees. We have
urged our friends in all the counties
to co-operate with the executive
committees and see to it that the
polls are opened in every militia
district in Georgia.
"Hundreds of prominent Georgians
who supported Mr. Walker and Mr.;
Holder have pledged us their active
aid because they believe Senator
Hardwick is entitled to the nomina
tion and the reports we have re
ceived at headquarters indicate that
Senator Hardwick’s victory will be
sweeping and complete.
Skeletons of Forty Men
Suggest Tragic Questions
Further search of the spot on the
Texas coast where were found twen
ty-five skeletons of human beings
early in August revealed fifteen
more skeletons, making a total of
forty men who were the victims of
some tragedy of which the people of
the present day have no knowledge.
No proof has come to light in sub
stantiation of the theory that the
skeletons belonged to members of
Jean Lafitte’s private crew. That
they belonged to some part of the
civilized world, however, is evident
from the rust incrusted relics found
close by. These include a brass in
cense burner, gold rings and brace
lets, and an unidentified iron ob
ject which bore the words "Cadiz,
Spain,” upon its surface. The fact
that close at hand were found many
Indian arrowheads leads to the con
clusion that the men who lost their
Ilves may have belonged to a crew
of a shipwrecked vessel and were
killed by redmen.

BERKELEY, Cal.—When you
leave your footprints in the sands
of time the chances are they’ll be
flat ones.
For,’according to Professor Frank
Kleieberger, physical director of the
University of California, the Great
American malady is flat-feet.
- FPt-feet, he says, come from
standing and walking on hard pave
ments. It’s peculiarly an effect of
city life, ffiarkeeps used to be the
worst sufferers, but postmen, bill
collectors, ribbon counter clerks and
motormen are all affected.
Thousands of young men coming
to the university are sufferers from
J. B. Briscoe, of Pecos, Tex., is of
the opinion that the skeletons may
be those of a party of men who
were on their way to Mexico in 1865
to keep from serving in the war be
tween the states. In a letter to a
public official of Corpus Christi, Mr.
Briscoe said:
“About the first of April, 1865, a
bunch of men—thirty-eight, I think—
left the west part of Hunt county
to go to Mexico to keep out of the
war and not one of them has ever
been, heard of since they left. I am
quite sure they were all .murdered
before they got to Mexico. They
started from mv wife’s father’s house
and she is the last person living who
saw them start. I was in the army
at the time and did not get home
until the last of May.”
The skeletons were given a Chris
tian burial at Corpus Christi a few
days ago. Search for possible treas
ure at the place where they were
found still is being carried on.
Alabama Legislature -
Ends Extra Session
MONTGOMERY, Ala., Oct. 3.
After a fourteen day session the Ala
bama legislature adjourned sine die
Saturday night, it having been
called to enact measures enabling
women to vote in Alabama elections
and other bills which the governor
considered essential. The stiffage
bills were passed and have been ap
proved by the governor.
The two houses convened on Sep
tember 14, a short time after the
Tennessee legislature had ratified
woman suffrage amendment.
Closing hours of the special ses
sion were unlike the regular session
of 1919, although there were several
speeches during the last two hours
in the house. Governor Kilby lost
one of his hardest fought battles
late tonight when the house refused
to concur in an executive amendment
which cut down an appropriation
made to the public schools. The
house killed the bill, thereby losing
$150,000 because the common school
advocates wanted half of a $500,000
appropriations, agreeing to give the
other half to the higher schools of
learning.
fiat- feet, so many that the physical
education experts have evolved a
system of curative training and
many are having this defect cor
rected.
“Flat-foots’* are made to balance
on a tight rope, pick up margles
with their toes, walk pigeon-toed,
tread an inverted trough, dance on
their toes and do other stunts to
build up muscles that have become
flabby from non-use.
“Flat-feet were discovered by the
luindredß of thousands in the war
draft,” said Kleeberger. “They are
the fruits of our civilization, and
come from too much standing or
walking on hard surfaces.”

Bathing Beauty “Vamps” Policeman
And Steals His Star; He Loses Job
Sufficiently dangerous are the Chi
cago bathing beach vampires when
they exercise their sprightly and
shapely charms on their home
grounds. But when, clad in highly
colored and clinging one-piece bath
ing suits, they invade the shores of
staid Highland Park, a suburb—well,
disaster follows in their wake.
Are they dangerous? Ask Police
man-that-was Paul Gerhardt, of High

mournful moans they are.
Up until a few weeks ago Gerhardt
was on the Highland Park beat. Then
he was assigned to the bathing
beach. All went well until groups
of Chicago bathing beauties, reach

with all the lure of a Ziegfeld
chorus. Then immediately something
went wrong with Policeman Paul.

As Prohibition Came
BALTIMORE. —The Triaca Liquor

eighteen days a net profit of f*300,-

a hearing before United States Com

Thomas Baker, an officer of the In

Baker faced charges of conspir

$5,000 from Charles Vincenti, presi

conspirators in keeping out of the
clutches of the revenue law.
Guerren himself admitted having
made $22,765 in the five months that
he was employed as sales manager
for the Triaca concern. “I had more
than that coming to me, but I will
not say anything about that at this
time,” said Guerren.
Guerren said he was formerly em

the solicitation of Vincenti
last August. He recived SIO,OOO as
salary to January 16. He and Wal

tional 10 per cent of all net profits
above $300,000 after December 8. It
took them until December 26 to pile
up the net profit of $300,000 for the
company.
“I got $22,765, or $12,765 above the
original $10,000,” said the witness.

WALKER SCORES
HARDWICK AND
HEARST ALLIANCE
Declaring that the Hardwick
forces are “in utter despair at the ;
prospects of defeat." Clifford "W.
Walker, candidate for governor, is
sued the following statement Satur
day :
“To the People of Georgia:
“In utter despair at the prospects
of defeat, as they »ee the ever-in
creasing manifestation of sober sec
ond-thought now apparent through
out the state, the Hearst-HardWick
machine stoops to the dastardly
depths of hiding behind women’s
petticoats and cowardly anonymous
names to make the outrageously
false charges of graft and slacker
ism.
“This is designed entirely to be

traitor, fiom his ringmaster,
Thomas W Hardwick, the associate

manipulator of steam-rollers and mi
nority votes: and from Thomas W.
Hardwick’s sponsor, W. F. Brandt,
a registered alien enemy and assis

ring—the companion and adviser of
the ringmaster.
“I shall at this time take no fur

than to call attention to the desper

lous ring can descend in their mad
determination to control Georgia.
The honor of my boys and the in
tegrity of my family can and will
be vindicated in another forum. We
are receiving unmistakable evidence
of an arused and millitant public
sentiment against the dangers of this
Hearst machine, which scruples not
to bitterly fight the Democratic
party in its Republican papers in
New York and San Francisco,
through the independent party in
Chicago and it so-called Democratic
paper in Atlanta.
“I have never uttered a single per

have fearlessly opened up his public
record as it appears on the printed
page. I have referred to the de

the women of Saratoff and Vladimir
in Russia as an example of the ex
treme to which the dangerous Bol

failed to say that Mr. Hardwick per

decrees. There was never a cleaner

mine.
