Atlanta Georgian on this subject
The eitfnrisl* ar** t«* be romnwndal,
and. ws hop*. will lead to ran#wad
Interest and some action by the state
of G^rg t* In caring for those an much
In need of sympathy And help.
The control and prevention of tu
bereuloal" In not ryilv a humanitarian
work, but *}*<■» one of self-preservation
and protection While tv* are helping
and Instructing the tuberculoua pa-
tientu how to care for themselves and
get well we are protecting other* and
possibly ourselves from Invnalon hy tha
dread disease The |oa* to Alpaca from
tuherculoal* alone for the last four or
live vears ha* averaged fkbo.ftftO annu
ally and what are we a* a city doing
or spending to combat or prevent the
epread of the disease?
Tuberculosis l* curable and prevent
able. and yet we aa a city are not
taking any active step* to do either.
Ro long ae we rail to do our duty to
humanity and -protect ouraelv^a we
must pay the penalty of a half million
annually, bealde* the ioaa of Ufa and
Buffering
The state of Georgia la equally neg
lecting rta duty along thla line. We
ahould have a state sanitarium for tha
tuberculoua The local and atate
boards of health should unite their
work a* to have every raise of tubercu-
leala reported, and then see that they
are properly supplied with Instructions
a* to prevention and control of the
disease. and where they are not able of
themselves provide them opportunities
to get well and protect others. A sys
tematic plan of education of the gen
eral public should be Instituted. The
children In the public schools should
as well aa other contagious disease*
This could be very easily don* by a
ronreifed action of the school author
Itlea, boards of health and msdtcal pro,
fegsinn. A committee of physicians
from i he Stats Medical Association has
been working along these lines for tha
last two or three years, hut have re
ceived very little enocuraaement from
the public end the atate. The com
mittee has made public appeals
throughout the atate for funds to pros*,
cute the work, but so far has not re
ceived any except from »be medical
profession The committee has not
only devoted their time m the work,
but have left their business and paid
their own expenses to attend meetings
of the committee. What other pro
fession would do aa much—pay to work
to destroy Its own business—for tha
sake of good to humanity?'
The work of the committee has not
been without some good result An
effort will be made to get the next
legislature to take steps to establish
and maintain a state sanitarium for
the tuberculous. We hope the pres*
and general public will urge such ac-
flop.
Many lectures have been given some
literature distributed, but the work
could be made much more efficient If
there were some funds that could be
used and as the public Is to receive
the benefit they should furnish the
means. A few hundred dollars apent
In printing and distributing pamphlets
of Instruction along these lines would
save thousands of dollars to the people
of the atate and many valuable lives
Every child In the eighth grade gram
mar school—all students In the high
schools, academies ahd colleges—should
be instrucred along these lines or sup
plied wlfh printed matter out of which
they can obtain the needed Instruc
tions
Savannah or Atlanta alone could wall
afford to meet the expenses of each a
crusade against tuberculosis. BIx cities
In the state of Georgia lose on an
average of one and a quarter million
dollars yearly from tuberculosis, and
there Is “neither sanitarium, hoslptal,
camp or dispensary for the special
treatment of tuberculosis in the state/*
How long will such things be?
Other state* end c|t|#s are providing
for this unfortunate class and Institut
ing means to prevent the spread of tho
disease, then why should Georgia and
Atlanta fall to keep up with the maren
of progress when It has more than a
hundred fold to do so?
Sanatoria properly located and
equipped could be made almost aelf-
sustalnlng after l**lng established.
They would be centers »f Instruction
and training to the tnmat*** that would
later disseminate the knowledge gained..
With a little training and n pamphlet
of Instructions the teachers throughout
the stats could soon be prr |»red to give
the necessary Instructions to thousands
of children yearly.
The state municipal and school au
thorities only have to signify a willing
ness to utilise these means and pay for
the publication and distribution of th*
literature and It will be written and
furnished. We also need a more lib
eral support of the state and local
boards of health. Often their useful
ness along these lines Is crippled ny
want of support of the general public
