"There Is another point to which I
desire to call your especial attention:
"The management of the Southern
railway has ttosn confided to ua as a
high and aacrad trust. This trust Is
not conffned to the prrsIdenL the gen

It eppllts with equal obligation. In his
sphere of action, to the humblest em
ployee aa It doss to the highest. Each
has his duty to perform and. In the
performance of that duty, ho repre
sents tha railway and Is engaged In
the performance of a trust In respect
to It. The brake man cannot perform

only In the honest and faithful per

a proper measure of success.
"The railway and th* public are en

BY STORY OF HER SUICIDE
New Tork, Feb. 18.—Mrs. Evelyn
Nesblt Tbnw was aroused from her
sleep at the Hotel Lorraine early today
by two detective#, who were Investl-
gating a rumor that she had commit
ted suicide.
The rumor that she had ended her
own life came from Pittsburg. It waa
followed a short time later by another
one.—equally ss start ling,- that aha had
been shat by one of Harry Thaw'd half
brothers.
This astounding Information was re
ceived by several newspapers. Police
headquarters was asked to Investigate.
Coroner Harburgtr waa also Informed.
The coroner called up the East Fif
ty-first street station and Sergeant
Daly sent two plain clothes men, Sul-
mers and Ilslch, to the Hotel Lorraine. ’
They were not satisfied with the an-
swers given by the clerk, so they went
up atatri aMl awakened Mrs. Thaw. —

DELA YS THE I HA W TRIAL
Continued From Pag* On*.
lleved their testimony will be the most
sensational adduced since Harry Thaw
waa put on trial for slaying the archi
tect.
They will testify that hla beautiful
studio waa a veritable dsn. From these
two men—J. J. Dee ring and Charles
M. J. Hambergsi^-who dogged While’*
footsteps after Thaw had complained
in Anthony Comstock of his manner of
life, the defense believe they will place
before the jury a picture of a design
ing man which will gain even more
sympathy for the prisoner than the
terrible story' told on ths witness stand
by Evelyn Nesblt Thaw.
Mrs. Thaw To B* Rscallsd.
She. too, will be recalled today, and
will take up the thread of her dra
matic etory. 8he will tell the names
of other young girl* who m*t Whit*
and will then bo turned over by her
lawyers to the merciless cross-exami
nation of District Atlomsy Jerome.
The evidence of Dr. Evans that Thaw
was Insane the night of the roof gar
den tragedy lias paved (he way for the
resuming of the young wife's testi
mony. 8h* will be preceded, however,
by Mr. Comstock's agents.
Thtre was much spsculatlnn today
when the trim was resumed, as to the
extent of the Information which Mre.
Holman, Evelyn'" mother, has furnish-'
ed to District Attorney Jgrnme.
Evelyn's Mothsr Aids Jsroms.
Jerome's admission to Lawyer Del-
fhas that he had a statement from Mrs.
Holman waa sufficient. It le said, to
throw the defense Into consternation.
That Mrs. Holman could tell much the
defense well knows. While her state
ment would be of no benefit to Jerome
as evidence, it would enable him to
dig pitfalls for Harry Thaw's wife
when he corns* to cross-examine her
and bring out any Inconalatenclea that
may be hidden away to her story.
The queetlon as to whether the court
will permit the promiscuous slandering
of Rianford White's memory will come
to an Issue when Mrs. Thaw takss the
stand. The district attorney has re
ferred to the stories so far told as base
calumnies and Idle tattle, and will taka
every means to counteract them.
JEROME AND DELMAS
CLASH OVER QUEETI0N8.
Afternoon Estslon/
New Tork. Feb. 18.—When court re
convened at Ij45 o'clock yesterday aft
ernoon. Dr. Evans, who had retired to
another room, sent out word that he
had’ not finished leading the letters
This occasioned another ten minutes'
delay, at the conclusion of which Dr.
Evans entered the court and resumed
the witness chair.
Dr. Evans said he was pustled to
understand the reference In a letter
which appeared to read like thla: “Men
celebrated for licking toes." Mr. Je
rome suggested that the letter be shown
to David N. Carvalho, the handwriting
expert, who was In court, to decipher
the word.
At 4:17 o'clock Dr. Evans announced
he had finished the letters.
Have you rend them with a view to
ascertaining the lights they shed upon
the character of the defendant ?" asked
Delmas.
"I have,” said Evans.
Mr. Delmas then asked Dr. Evans
the same hypothetical question that he
asked of Dr. Wagner yesterday. Je
rome objected to th* phrase, "had ln»
sane uncle."
Another portion of ths hypothetical «r
question that was changed under ob- \' r
jectlons from th* district attorney waa •,
that at th* Cafe Martin, "Whlta waa
visible to the young wife, but not to tbs ^
young husband."
•Another change mad* In the state
ment was that "the young man pulled
a pistol from hla pockeL"
"There is no evldeno* showing that
he pulled It from his pockeL" Ban J*- ' * -
rome. .
"Well, I thought I bad the right to
assume that be pulled the pistol Boot
hla pocket and not from bis hot," re- j
joined Mr. Delmas, "but I trill leave.
out the word T>ocket' and limply eay
pulled a pistol." ].
Questioned by Delates:
"Now, what In your opinion waa.
th* mental condition of thnt young man t *
on the night of June 35. 1108, at the
time he fired the fatal Shota?"
This being objected to. Mr. Delmas,
aakad; "1 will ask you to state upon I ,
these facts embodied la the question
aa amended In your nrtaenc* and In the *
light of these letters shed upcm hi*,
mental stats. If th* young man In jrour I
opinion knew th* act waa wrong?" ;
Will Put Questions.
"I do not belter* ha knew th* set ,
was wrong," said Dr. Ifraae.
(injection to the answer waa eua-
talned.
“In your opinion, doctor, did he know '
th* act wee wrong?" , „
"In my opinion he did not know the
act was wrong.” replied the witness.
"In your opinion, did he know tla» •
nature or quality of the act?"
"No."
Mr. Delmaa announced that he had
two further questions to ask th* wlt-
"I will put thff question# to
he said. *„
Th* district attorney said that this
was an unusual proceeding, bat not- ;
withstanding that, he would agree to
adjournment. Court then adjourned
till It: It Wednesday morning.
