Chicago, Feb. 25.—One of the largest.
If not the largest, theft* from the
United States treasury in Chicago U
being Investigated today. Between

Chief Wilkie, of the United Stales
secret service, has been keeping In
formed by telephone and telegraph of
every development In the Investigation
nnd he left Washington today to take
lierxonal charge of the Investigation.
Secretary Shaw, of the treasury de
tainment, was told or the gigantic theft
when In Chicago last week, and was In
,,inference with Sub-Treasurer William
Holdenweck and secret service officials.
The money was stolen either a week
ago Saturday, the next day or last
Monday. The chances are It was ab
stracted on Monday. The loss woa dis
covered on Tuesday.
All the money was taken In blits of
the denomination of tl.OOO, 55,000 and
110.000.
Just who discovered the loss, the sub
treasury officials would not admit last
night. Neither would they tell from
w hat department the money was taken
nor how the loss was discovered.
At ffast It was believed chat there

It was thought to be Impossible that
such a large sum art money could have
been abstracted.In the face of all the

Macon, (3a., Feb. 25.—The Georgia
Southern and Florida passenger train
No. 5, leaving Macon at 12:50 this
morning, was derailed near the 47 mile
post, between Unadltla and Ptnehurst,
at 4 o’clock.
The engine turned over on the right II

over on the left side, the two coaches
left the rails, but did not turn over.

has just reached here that on Satur
day night In Luthersvllle, Ga.. Mrs.
PaulCouch was so badly burned that
she died yesterday.
, Details are meager, but It Is said
she was preparing lo retire and waa
sitting or standing near the Are. when
her dress caught. Before assistance
could reach her. she was -ao badly
burned that death came to her relief
Sunday afternoon.
She was one of the most attractive
voung matrons of the city and was the
daughter of Mannle Wilson, a very
prominent planter of that section. 8he
had been married scarcely a year.
